Gina I didn’t sleep. Not really. I closed my eyes. I turned over. I counted sheep. I even downloaded one of those meditation apps Kelly swore by that promised to have me asleep in five minutes. Instead, I spent fifteen minutes listening to a woman with an impossibly soothing voice tell me to imagine floating on a cloud. The only thing I imagined was the man in the parking garage. Every time I drifted off, I heard footsteps. Every time I woke up, Lilo was pressed against my side, snoring softly, completely unaware that her owner had become convinced every shadow outside the apartment window was someone watching. By the time my alarm went off, I felt like I’d slept maybe thirty minutes. Lilo stretched dramatically before rolling onto her back. “You had a great night, didn’t you?”
