The gossip about the ball spread quickly. I hadn't told anybody that I had been invited. Yet now all the servants and knights knew. Everyone discussed how beautiful I was and how fine the jewels I wore were. I was quick to clarify that it was all on loan and I have none of them now. It would prevent anyone from trying to search my room for them. I knew not all the servants were honest and would have no trouble trying to steal from a nobody.
Luckily, a new topic spread just as fast. The king had been sloppy. A woman was seen being snuck into his room that night. Now the whole palace knew. The whispers were especially loud in the guest wing. As I stood stationed in the sitting room while the ladies had tea, the topic was obvious. I tuned them out until one of them flagged me over
