Between Two Alphas

CHAPTER 9

AUSTINS POV

I should’ve stayed with her, this wouldn’t have happened if I had been the one to stay instead of Josh. I thought everything would be fine, I could see something was bothering her but I thought maybe she didn’t want to see me and that was all.

Josh, my office now.

Yes Alpha.

Two minutes later there’s a knock on the door.

“Come in “ I say, and Josh walks through the door.

“Explain” I say through a growl that escapes my throat.

“ Alpha please forgive me, I’m not sure what happened. One minute I was standing guard and the next I heard a snarl down the hall, followed it outside and I found myself fighting and chasing after two wolves I didn’t recognize.”

“You mean to tell me two unidentified wolves made their way into MY territory, attacked one of my pack members and MY MATE with out being noticed!?”

Damion walks in as I’m screaming at Josh, he gives me his stare of disapproval. I know why, Josh isn’t to blame, he did his best and wasn’t aware of who exactly he was protecting or what he was protecting her of. Actually none of us are sure about that part.

“I’m sorry Josh,” I finally say, “ what happened wasn’t your fault, you may go”

“Thank you Alpha and again I’m sorry,” he says bowing his head and heads out.

“I want you to personally see to her safety when I can’t, protecting her will be your only job until we find who did this.”

“Yeah I hear you, but why didn’t you just ask me to stand watch last night instead of Josh?”

“Because I wasn’t sure, it could’ve just been me being overprotective and if you left Hailey alone she might’ve gone with Claire.”

“And then Claire would find out..okay yeah I see what you mean. What do you want to do now?”

“I don’t know, I’m not sure where to start, who or what we’re looking for, why they did this..however I am sure that whoever did attack Claire also attacked the betas, probably as some sort of distraction..”

“You’re probably right but we’ll figure it out don’t worry. I’m gonna go back to Hailey she’s pretty shaken up about this.”

I thank Damion before he leaves my office. I check the time and it’s only 3:00 pm, not much time has passed since I was in Claire's room but it feels like days. I have to see her, I know her father said she needs to rest but I just need to be close to her.

My heart won’t be at ease until I’m the one watching over her, no disrespect to Alpha Hewitt of course but I have to be the one to be with her, care for her, protect her.

Before I can stop myself I’m already on my way to the pack hospital. I decide to make a stop at my favorite coffee shop and get her something to eat.

I order her an everything bagel with strawberry cream cheese and an americano , my favorite breakfast.

I make my way through the hospital, head to the second floor where her room was. When I get to her room she isn’t there.

Doctor Howard?

Yes Alpha? Is everything alright?

Where is Ms. Hewitt?

She left not too long ago, she refused to stay any longer and since she was healed I let her go.

Great I came all this way for nothing. I head back to the pack house, hoping I can catch up to her.

I reach the training facility when I spot her. I break into a sprint and catch up with her rather quickly.

“Why aren’t you back at the hospital?”

By the look on her face I asked a little too sternly which , I assume , pissed her off.

“I don’t owe you any sort of explanation.”

Ouch, she definitely didn’t appreciate my tone.

“No of course not, I’m sorry I didn’t mean for my tone to come out the way it did, it’s just you were better off at the hospital where the doctor can take care of you.”

“I’m fine. I’m all better, it was just a bump on the head. I am not going back there.”

What a stubborn female, I can’t admit it to her right now but man is it a turn on. Just as I’m about to speak Logan walks up behind me.

Not only does he interrupt my conversation with her but he also shows up with food AND flowers.

I want to punch him but I try not to let my emotions get the best of me, I can’t let him see that it gets to me.

“Claire, you need to be in bed resting,” Logan says.

“Oh great, this is exactly what I need. The two of you telling me what I need to do.”

” I don’t want you to feel like I’m telling you what to do, I’m just worried about you.”

I chime in, “I am telling you what to do, I am your mate, whether you choose me or not in the end, right now in this moment and till the moment you choose, I am your mate.”

“I hate to say this but I second that. As he said, you are my mate. You might choose me you might not but that doesn’t matter to me right now, I want you in a safe place until we find the person responsible for your attack.”

She walks closer to me and stares me down silently. She then walks closer to Logan and stares him down as well . She opens her mouth to say something but changes her mind. She takes what we brought her and walks away without a single word to either one of us.
