Chapter 6

"We need to get out of here, Miss Brenda! We can't wait any longer!" A man's voice, raw with fear, sliced through the tense silence. Others echoed his sentiment, their voices rising in a chorus of desperation. Brenda clenched her fists, her jaw tight. "Like I said, we're going to wait a few more minutes." Her voice was firm, but inside, doubt gnawed at her. "Minutes? We've waited for hours! They're not coming back!" "The vampires are already inside our borders! What if they've been attacked? Are we just waiting to be slaughtered?" "Ambrose said if he didn't return, we should leave!" A wave of anger washed over Brenda, threatening to consume her. "Enough!" she roared, her voice echoing through the tunnel. The crowd fell silent, their eyes wide with shock and a hint of fear. "The people you want to abandon are your Luna, her innocent child, Ambrose – the man who risked his life to guide you all here – and Adam, the warrior who would gladly die to protect you!" Her words hung in the air, heavy with accusation. Guilt flickered across their faces, their earlier frustration replaced by shame. Brenda sighed, the fight draining out of her. "I understand we're all scared," she said, her voice softer now. "But please, let's just wait a little longer. I promise you, we'll leave before the vampires reach us." She pleaded with them, her eyes searching theirs, begging for understanding. ___ "Give me the baby!" Sage snarled, his eyes blazing with fury. "You know Father gave this assignment to me!" Stefan retorted, his voice dripping with contempt. "Are you questioning his judgment?" "I'm questioning your competence!" Sage shot back. "You always try to undermine me, make me look weak in front of Father!" Catherine and Adam watched the brothers' escalating argument with a mixture of confusion and growing hope. "An opportunity," Catherine whispered, her mind racing. "We need to exploit this." "How?" Adam whispered back, his brow furrowed. Catherine shook her head, her eyes darting around, wary of the vampires' enhanced hearing. "Just trust me. Play along." She stepped forward, placing herself between the warring brothers. "Gentlemen, please," she said, her voice surprisingly calm. "I can see you're both eager to… 'dispose' of my child. But I'm a practical woman. I want to give her to the one who's most capable." She paused, her eyes scanning their faces, gauging their reactions. "And frankly," she continued, her voice laced with a hint of disdain, "seeing how weak and… unstable you both seem, I'm not sure either of you is up to the task." Sage's face contorted with rage. "How dare you!" he roared. "I'm far more powerful than this… this weakling! You'd be a fool to give him your child!" "What is she doing?" Adam muttered, his confusion growing. Stefan's eyes narrowed, suspicion clouding his features. "Don't think I'm buying this act, Luna," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "I know you're trying to manipulate us." Catherine shrugged, feigning indifference. "What fuel is there to add? I'm simply stating the obvious. One of you is clearly superior to the other." She moved closer to Stefan, her eyes locking with his. "And right now, I believe that's you." Stefan hesitated, his suspicion warring with a flicker of triumph. He wasn't convince, his eyes never leaving Catherine's. "Are you sure you're willingly giving me this baby?" "Luna, please, don't do this," Adam pleaded, his voice filled with despair. He couldn't believe she was actually considering handing over her child. As Stefan's hand reached for Romilda, Catherine's expression hardened. This was it. She had to act now. Sage, his rage boiling over, drew his sword, intending to strike Catherine from behind. But Catherine had anticipated his move. With lightning reflexes, she sidestepped and shoved Stefan into Sage's path. "If you want a chance at my baby," she spat, her voice filled with venom, "then prove you're better than your brother!" Stefan's eyes flashed with fury. "She's trying to pit us against each other!" he roared, his voice barely controlled. Before Stefan could react, Sage lunged, his sword aimed at his brother's heart. Stefan barely managed to dodge the blow, his face contorted with shock and betrayal. "She's playing us, you i***t!" Stefan yelled, parrying Sage's next attack. While the brothers clashed, their battle a whirlwind of steel and fury, Catherine grabbed Adam's arm. "Now!" she hissed. They charged into the remaining vampires, their movements swift and deadly. Adam fought with a ferocity born of desperation, his every blow aimed at protecting Catherine and her child. "Stop them!" Stefan roared, momentarily breaking away from his fight with Sage. "Don't let them escape!" "They were just trying to pit us against each other so they could escape!" Stefan yelled, trying to get Sage to reason with him. Unwilling to listen, Sage flung Stefan aside, rushing towards him with a tightly folded fist, hitting him hard on the face, which made Stefan pass out. Ambrose's heart leaped with relief as he spotted Catherine and Adam, their faces streaked with dirt and blood, fighting their way towards him. Romilda was still safe in Catherine's arms. "Thank the Moon Goddess you're alive!" he exclaimed, his voice filled with emotion. "There's no time for gratitude," Catherine snapped, her voice hoarse. "They're still coming. We need to move, now! We can't risk leading them to the others." Adam nodded in agreement. "We can't take the same route. It's too dangerous." "I know another tunnel," Ambrose said, his eyes grim. "It's longer, more treacherous, but it's our only chance. I already told Brenda to leave if we didn't return." "Then let's go," Catherine urged, her voice tight with urgency. In the tunnel, the pack members huddled together, their nerves stretched to the breaking point. Every rustle, every shadow sent shivers down their spines. Suddenly, they heard footsteps approaching. Relief washed over them, quickly followed by a wave of joyous exclamations. "They're back! Thank the Moon Goddess!" But their celebration was short-lived. As the figures emerged from the darkness, their smiles faded, replaced by looks of stark terror. Instead of Catherine, Ambrose, and Adam, they were confronted by a pack of vampires, their eyes burning with predatory hunger. "Well, well, well," one of the vampires sneered, his voice dripping with malice. "So this is where you're all hiding." He laughed, a harsh, grating sound that sent a chill down their spines. The vampires surged forward, their fangs bared, their eyes fixed on their terrified prey. Brenda, her heart pounding in her chest, rallied the remaining warriors. "Fight!" she roared, her voice filled with defiance. "Protect the others!" A fierce battle erupted, the tunnel echoing with the sounds of clashing steel, desperate cries, and the guttural snarls of the vampires. Brenda fought with a ferocity she didn't know she possessed, her every blow fueled by a desperate need to protect her children and avenge her fallen husband. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the last vampire fell, his body collapsing in a heap. The tunnel fell silent, save for the ragged breathing of the survivors. Brenda, her arms had been bruised, her heart heavy with grief and despair. "We can't stay here," a man said, his voice trembling. "We have to go. Now." Brenda hesitated, her gaze fixed on the tunnel entrance, her mind replaying Ambrose's words: We can't risk leading them to the others. With a heavy heart, she made her decision. "You're right," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "We have to leave. Now. We can't risk any more lives." She turned to the pack members, her eyes filled with sorrow. "Gather your belongings. We're leaving." The pack members, their faces etched with grief and fear, quickly gathered their belongings. They followed Brenda as she led them out of the tunnel, leaving behind their once peaceful home, their fallen comrades, and any hope of rescue for Catherine, Ambrose, and Adam.
