I Am Who?

1850 Words
BEEP BEEP BEEP ‘What is that?’ ‘Awwww, my body hurts. It feels like I have been mauled by a dozen elephants during a circus.’ ‘What happened.’ “She moved, her fingers just moved.” “Doctor, where is the doctor.” “Someone call a doctor here now!” ‘What’s going on, why is it so noisy. I am tired.’ Lian stood in a corner and watched the doctors and nurses check on the girl. After two weeks in a coma, she was finally showing signs of waking up. The doctor took out his flashlight then opened the eye of the girl. He checked on how dilated her eyes were then started moving the light from left to right. “Can you hear me? If you can hear me then please follow the direction of the light.” The doctor communicated with the girl. Her eyes moved slightly giving a great sense of hope and relief to the doctor. He has been pressured for the last two weeks by Lian, demanding him to make the girl wake up. He wanted to cry out so bad and tell Lian that he is no God. The waking signs that the girl was showing were like a thorn in his throat that was removed. The girl's identity was a puzzle to him. He knew that Lian is someone who is on top of the food chain. Almost all the news outlets in town have at least featured him twice in their reports, meaning that he is quite the popular one. But when he suddenly came in with a patient, that in the middle of the night, became a great puzzle to the hospital staff. The greater puzzle was who is that girl, her relationship with Lian and where did she come from. Lian's concern and attentiveness to the girl is a clear indication that she holds an important role in Lian's heart. However, Lian has no sisters, only a pair of twin brothers that are younger than him for ten years. She can't be his mother since it is known that Lian's mother is a tall beauty and the girl is quite the small and delicate type. They can only conclude that she is a hidden lover of Lian's. After checking her vitals and listing some information and data on his chart, the doctor sighed in relief. “She is showing great signs of improvement. She will wake up soon.” The doctor informed Lian. Lian nodded at the doctor's words with his gaze still focused on the girl sleeping on the bed. She looked so weak. Thick gauze covered her head and her lower arm is in a cast. Even in a sorry state, she is still beautiful. Right after her condition stabilized, Lian had Cord prepare a plane equipped with the right facilities to carry a patient. He then asked the hospital director for a team of doctors and nurses that will accompany them during the trip. The director disagreed with Lian's idea since the patient was in a terrible condition just a few minutes ago. After discussing and planning on how to travel the patient, the director finally agreed to an overseas hospital transfer. When the doctor and the nurses went out, Lain slowly made his way towards the girl’s bed. He held her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. He pulled the chair nearer to the bed, sat down, and observed the girl. She is breathing quite peacefully, minus the gauze and bandages, someone may mistake her to be sleeping. It was a tiring day, from work and home. Everybody is pressuring him to get married. His grandfather kept reminding him and recommending him his friend's granddaughters. His business partners are introducing their daughters to him, not at all discreet. Wanting to take a break for the day, he laid his head on the girl's bed while holding her hand. ‘My eyelids are heavy.’ ‘My body feels numb.’ ‘My joints are aching.’ ‘Just what the hell is going on?’ I did my best trying to open my eyes because that incessant beeping sound just can’t stop. It is annoying really. The first thing that came to my view when I opened my eyes is the blaring light coming from the ceiling. There was a monitor on my left, it seems to be the source of the beeping sound that woke me up. Beside it is an IV drip attached to my arm that feels so heavy. I can’t move my body. I can’t even stretch my neck and this nose is blocking my view. I opened my mouth to ask for help but no sound came out. Why is this so frustrating? I am thirsty, hungry, tired and most of all, confused about what is going on! I just laid back staring at the ceiling when something suddenly blocked my view, or rather a man blocked my view. I heard a loud scraping sound that was a result of the chair being pushed back then a person shouting in a language I do not understand. "She is awake! Doctor, doctor she is awake! Her eyes are open." Lian shouted towards the door hoping that the nurse stationed outside will hear him. He looked back at the girl and asked how she is doing. "Are you alright? Can you hear me? Are you thirsty? Would you like some water? Yes water, I will get you water." Lian scrammed off towards the pantry, opening the fridge looking for a bottle of water only to find it full of beer and wine. He looked around him and remembered that there is a water dispenser at the nurse's station just a floor below. "Wait for me, I will go get water for you," Lian informed the girl and bolted towards the door in search of water. The girl's eyebrows slowly knitted in confusion. She did not understand a thing that Lian said just a while ago. 'What the hell was he talking all about?' while still pondering, the door was opened in a hurry and a group of what seemed to be nurses and doctors came filling in. "Madam, you are awake. We will check your vitals and draw some blood from you for tests. I hope for your cooperation." the doctor told her then signaled a nurse that immediately stepped forward to take her blood pressure and draw some blood. The girl just watched them do whatever they are doing even if she did not understand what the doctor was telling her earlier. The man from earlier came back gasping for air with a cup of water that is half-filled. Judging from the splashes on his shirt and his disheveled looks, the girl can guess that the man ran at full speed while holding the cup of water in his hand. "Who are you, people?" The people in the room looked at each other. The doctors seem concerned and started discussing with themselves. One of them took courage and asked "Madam, what is the last thing you remember, or rather do you know your name?" Now that they mention it, I don't remember anything at all. I do not know my name, my age, not even my place of origin. I just keep staring at them in utter confusion and they seem to understand that I am not following up with them at all. The man, who went to get some water stepped up and asked, "Do you remember me?" He looks expectant, a little bit nervous with a tinge of fear in his eyes. I slowly shook my head and when I did, he looked relieved? He took a seat beside my bed and looked at me straight in the eye. Then he said, "I am Dhallian Heil Franco, call me Lian, and I am your fiancee." "I am who?" It's been months, three to be exact, and I am recovering well. The people of this place treat me kindly, providing me with everything that I need. I have been recovering in bed for the two and a half months since I woke up. And Lian, Lian was just the sweetest. He comes to visit every day, carrying flowers with him. He was so sweet and caring, always looking after me. When I woke up, confused and disoriented, Lian was the one who was patient enough to explain what was happening. the doctor told me that I had permanent amnesia due to shock and trauma when I had an accident. The doctor explained that I won't be able to remember anything from my past. I may be able to remember if I go for therapy and if there will be a trigger. I was admiring the flowers Lian brought me yesterday when there was a knock on the door. "Come in," I replied. The doctor and nurse came in. "Good morning, ma'am," the nurse greeted. "Ma'am, I will check first your vitals then assess you on how much you remember about your past." the doctor briefed Lindy. "Uhm well yes, please do so." The doctor went on to carry out his duties as the nurse went over to assist. Not long after, the door opened, revealing Lian in a navy turtleneck, black coat over his dress pants. It is not the first time that Lindy saw Lian, but she just cannot get used to his handsomeness. She unknowingly stared too long and was snapped out of her daydream when the nurse asked for her attention. "Ma'am, can you hear me?" the nurse asked. "Huh, huh? Ye-yeah. What's wrong?" Lindy “Ma’am, I will be removing your IV today. Just a few more tests and you will be able to go home tomorrow,” the nurse replied. “Oh I see, okay,” Lindy said then smiled, happy that she will finally be able to go home. She looked at the nurse and doctor’s back as they were leaving. She looked around and observe the room that she had occupied for the last few months. Unknowingly, her eyes started to tear up. Lian who was observing, saw that Lindy was about to cry so he came over to wipe the tears that started to fall on her cheeks. “Are you that sad to leave this place?” Lian asked in a gentle voice. Lindy bowed her head and after a while shook it from signaling a no. She looked up and met Lian’s eyes, with a straight gaze she said, “No. It just that, it already felt like home. I have been here for a couple of months or so, I am already used to things in here. It will surely be nostalgic. I am both happy and grateful for those who attended to me during my stay here. And I am not crying because I am sad, I am crying because I am happy. These are tears of joy you know,” Lindy explained to Lian and pouted at the end, hating that she was misunderstood.
