Chapter 2

“ What do you think about this one ?” Lana asked.
I looked at the dress she was holding. It was a cocktail dress, nude in colour and with black stones in the chest area.
“ It’s beautiful,” I said.
She wasn’t certain but she put it in her hands anyway.
“ How about you try those 5 dresses and then you check something else?”
“ I prefer undressing only once.”
Good point.
Lana had another family wedding and she wanted to go full-on glam to impress her boyfriend’s family.
“ I like the nude one.” She said and I nodded.
“ How’s Coda ?” She asked as she was looking deeply for a dress that would tell her that this is the right one.
“ He almost gave me a heart attack.”
She looked up at me.
“ He used the B-sharp and that means emergency. Although it’s true we were late but still, I almost fell out of bed.”
She chuckled. “ He’s got a sense of humour.”
I shook my head and smiled.
After a thousand dresses, Lana finally decided on the nude one. We found some matching heels and we went for a bite.
Lana was texting her boyfriend as we waited for the food.
I kept glancing up and down from the menu. For no particular reason really but I wasn’t really sure if I should mention the encounter with the hot guy. Did I mention that I had a packet of tampons in my trolley and he grabbed it for me? No right?
“ Do you want to tell me something ?” Lana said looking amused.
I blinked at her.
“ Um-”
“ Spill.” She ordered.
I put the menu down and put my hand on hers.
“ I had a fateful encounter, where my tampons ended up in the hands of a blue-eyed angel.”
Lana blinked at me.
She bit her lip trying hard not to laugh.
It was a watching contest who would burst out the first.
I couldn’t handle it anymore so I burst into a fit of laughter and she joined me.
We laughed so hard that everyone was watching us amused, some people even laughed with us, totally oblivious to why or what we are laughing at.
I wiped my eyes.
“Jesus, I haven’t laughed like that in ages.” Lana sighed, trying not to laugh again.
I shook my head. Me neither.
We both kept in silence for a couple of minutes trying not to crack up again and when we finally calmed down, Lana looked at me.
“ So was it true?” She said hiding her smile.
I nodded.
Her face turned serious.
“ You serious?”
“ Yeah and let me tell you, he was hot like I wanted to lick his face hot.”
“ Damn.”
I nodded.
“ So ?”
“ So what? “
We both looked at each other.
“ So So What, I’m still a rock star…” We sang softly.
” Don’t avoid the question anymore.” She said wiping a tear under her eyes.
The waiter came with our drinks and I waited for him to leave before starting my story.
She laughed out loud at the part of the tampons again.
“ Was he really that hot ?” She asked.
“ You would melt,” I emphasized.
She sipped her cappuccino.
“ You should have asked him his name at least.” She said disappointed for me.
I shook my head. “ If I stayed near him for another second I would have jumped on him.”
Lana snorted in her cappuccino and it went flying on the table.
We both giggled.
After eating we went our separate ways. Coda was still an hour of school, maybe I should go check out some clothes for him.
I wanted to buy the whole store every time I entered in here. A cute sailor outfit was on display. I wanted to buy it for him so bad but he’s all grown up now. But then I found a shirt with a music sheet on and I bought it immediately. Before finding anything else I went outside. He has a whole closet full of clothes and he usually just wears some of them. But I’m sure he will love this shirt.
I nodded happy with myself and headed out. It’s a long walk but it’s worth it. The cold breeze is washing my chocolate brown hair away from my face. Softly evaporating the sweat of the walk from my forehead. It was still quiet and the birds are chirping in the trees. Coda would have loved this walk. He loves nature just as much as I do. And I hope to be able to take him around the world one day, to all the beautiful places that he wants to go. Which are a lot, he has a whole list where he wants to go.
As I walked I looked down at the clock, 2 p.m, he should be done soon. I stopped near our meeting spot. Other parents were arriving, all chatting with each other.
Suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder and as I turned to see who it was, I froze. It was the blue-eyed tampon guy, as Lana has called him.
“ Hi,” he said smiling down at me.
“ Hi,” I said back, not knowing how the words actually came out of my mouth.
“ Sorry to have startled you, again, but I saw you and -”
I shook my head softly. “Don’t worry about it.”
I smiled and put my hand out. “ Iris. Nice to meet you.”
He smiled and took my hand in his. “ Jace, pleasure is all mine.”
We kept looking at each other and he left his hand in mine.
Suddenly I felt a tug on my sleeve.
I turned and Coda was looking up at me with a huge smile on his face.
I quickly removed my hand from Jace’s and turned to talk to my son.
“Hello, sweetheart. How was your day ?”
He nodded softly and grabbed a paper from his backpack.
I looked at the paper, he has drawn what I’m assuming it’s me and him playing the piano.
“Wow, it’s beautiful,” I said kissing his head.
He pointed at his friends and kept glancing back from me and them.
“ Go play a little more. Don’t take too long.” He grinned from ear to ear and ran to his friends.
Suddenly I remembered who was behind me.
I turned slowly to find him smiling down at me.
“ Um-”
“ You could have told me from the start that you are occupied, I would have kept my boundaries.” He chuckled softly.
My mouth fell open.
“ I’m not judging, you gotta thing for little kids. I totally understand that.” He continued, putting a hand on his mouth trying hard not to laugh.
My mouth kept open.
He laughed out loud and put his fingers under my mouth and pushed my mouth closed.
“ Where’s the father ?” he asked now serious.
I shook my head.
“ Somehow I don’t think that that’s your concern, now is it ?” I said pulling one eyebrow up.
He put his hands up and nodded.
“True, but I just want to get to know you.”
“ And why is that ?”
“ Because-” He said stepping closer.
I stepped back and he chuckled.
“ See you around, Iris.” He said while pulling a string of my hair behind my ear.
He walked away without turning back.
I composed myself and turned to see Coda, playing happily with his friends.
I took the time to call Lana.
She answered after a couple of beeps.
“ Yeah ?”
” Blue-eyed Tampon guy,” I said and kept repeating it.
“Whoa, Whoa calm down,” Lana said chuckling at my reaction.
I took a deep breath.
“ He came to talk to me.”
“ And ?”
“ He took a step closer..”
“ And ?” Lana sounded excited.
“ I took a step back.”
I heard a loud thud.
“ What the hell is wrong with you ?” Lana said.
“ What happened ?”
“ I fell from the chair.”
I laughed.
“ Coda was here Lana. What was I supposed to do ?”
“ Oh. That changes things.”
“ Yeah.”
“ What did he say next ?”
“ See you around Iris. And he pulled a strand of my hair behind my ear.”
“ This is so exciting.” She squealed.
“ The hell it is.”
“ You like him!” She shouted in my ear.
I sighed.
“ Coda is coming, call you later.”
“ You sure will.”
Coda came running into my arms and turned to wave to his friends one last time and we headed home.
