Harlem's pov
I couldn't deny the fact that the elders were right, and it perturbed me so much that I couldn't even go back to face Kayla. I had ignored the red flags for so long, that I was starting to get comfortable with her, but the elders had come to unveil the covering over my eyes. As much as I was furious about the reminder, I knew it was true.
My insides were uneasy, and it seemed as if I was going to throw up. I adjusted for the umpteenth time on the chair before finally getting up to pace around the room. I had tried to convince myself all this while that Kayla might by some miracle gets her wolf, but deep down, I knew that Kayla was wolfless and even though I hated to admit it, rumours were starting to spread even to the neighbouring packs that looked up to us.
"What do I do now?!" I asked myself, "Soon enough, the people will start visiting to ask me questions about their Luna, and what should I tell them?" I said and unconsciously walked to the palace entrance where some guards were stationed.
"Uhm your Highness, are you going somewhere?!"
It took me a moment to realize that I had walked out of the palace completely if not for the guard's question that stopped me in my tracks. My insides churned the moment I saw the look on their faces.
"Don't you have something else to do than to ask me silly questions?" I let out in defence.
"We're sorry your Highness. We were just worried." They chorused.
"Save it!" I chorused again before walking out on them. I knew that as I walked, their gazes still lingered on me. I hate feeling stupid around them.
"Dang it!" I cursed out loud the moment I heard Kayla call my name. "What the hell does she want now?" I asked as I faced the direction of where her voice had come from. I could not deny the fact that I was slightly irritated when I heard her voice.
"Harlem, Harlem, can you please come over to the dining, breakfast is ready!" I heard her say it again.
"Breakfast? By this time of the day?" I muttered under my breath before making my way out of the throne room and toward the dining hall. As I marched in, I tried to hide my disgust the moment Kayla came over and gave me a kiss in front of her twin sister.
"Wait. What was that scent?!" I intoned internally as my eyes rested on Kiana, Kayla's twin.
"Kiana has a wolf?!" I accidentally said it out loud.
Kayla withdrew immediately from me and stared at me with a look of shock etched in her intense gaze.
"What....what did you just say?" Kayla let out. I forcefully broke the frozen gaze on her twin and anchored my eyes on a stunned Kayla.
"What's the matter?" I asked her. I hadn't even realized the gravity of what I said, but my gaze at Kayla was unapologetic.
I waited for Kayla to begin lashing out, but she just stood there with her stunned face whiter than my barely moisturized knuckles. I made my way past her and took a seat at the dining table. I took one last glance at Kiana before ordering a maid at the table to serve my plate.
"Why, don't just stand there, you two come over to the table," I said and chugged down a glass of wine.
"Harlem, did you just say something?" Kayla came over to my seat and said.
"Quiet down and have a seat beside me," I said indifferently. "Would you rather banter than come sit and refill your stomach?" I asked her.
"I am not hungry..." She replied, her tone dripping with pain.
"Well, I am famished, in fact, and I beg you to let me eat my meal in peace," I said, and returned my attention to the food, biting off the lap of a lamb.
"Kayla, why do you leave your husband alone and eat your meal before it gets cold?" I heard Kiana admonish.
"Let her be. If she doesn't want her meal, then I'll have it. You can go ahead with yours," I said to Kiana.
From the corner of my eye, I saw Kayla open her mouth to say something but then hesitated and closed it back. She rolled her hands into a fist before storming out of the dining room.
"Kayla!!" Kiana called after her.
"Let her be!" I ordered her, my irritation simmering just above the surface.
Kiana shot me a look of disgust before she stood up from her seat and ran after her sister.
"Pitiful!" I let out and shook my head. "Put all their portions on my plate," I ordered the maid, and she did that instantly with no questions at all.
"You can leave now," I said to her and brought the plate closer to me. I scooped a portion to lead to my mouth but when I had started to chew, I realized that I had suddenly lost my appetite.
"How the hell does Kiana have a wolf and Kiana does not?!" I asked myself, but then quickly turned around to make sure that the area was devoid of anybody. I didn't want to risk leaving such information out at that moment.
"I need to seek Hart's opinion about this, he'll know more about this." I intertwined my fingers and wedged my chin on top of it as I pondered deeply. I looked at the food before me and tried taking another spoon, but I didn't have the stomach for it.
"Or why don't I? I just asked Kiana myself as to why she has a wolf and her sister doesn't." I got up and was about to make my way to Kiana's chambers when I remembered that she might be with Kayla.
I let out a sigh of disappointment. "Well, another time then," I said and made my way out of the palace.
