'Hey Darsh we gotta share the book I didn't pack my bags today' said Aarush. It was the last
period of the day. Aarush and Darsh sat groggily in their desk wishing the class to end as soon
as possible. 'Duh Aarush, whenever do you even pack your bags' asked Aanya and Ishyaa
giggled.
Aarush was in the ninth grade of Bon valley High. Darsh was his best mate and Aanya and
Ishyaa sat behind them. Then there was Manish the one who always had something to say and
was often referred to as the class joker.
'Good Afternoon, Mrs Chatterjee' spoke the class in unison as Mrs Chatterjee the physcology
teacher entered the class ten minutes late. Smiling pleasantly, Mrs Chatterjee announced ,'
Boys and girls no need to open your books today…' 'Oh yeah ? That's brilliant or Aarush would
be standing out of the class today' said Darsh loudly. The whole class laughed and giggled while
Aarush became as red as a tomato. A small grin was visible for a few moments on Mrs
Chatterjee's lips too. 'Um Ma'am, then what are we going to study today?' asked the ever
studious Aanya. 'It's better for her to stay in coop with her books than to come in the class'
whispered Darsh in Aarush's ear and both the boys laughed while the girls in the back
wondered what went wrong. 'Enough of this now!! Darsh and Aarush if you crack one more of
your silly jokes then both of you will be standing in the corridor regardless of the fact that Darsh
has brought his book.' said Mrs Chatterjee with a stern look.
'Dear students today's subject might be of some interest to you all, I'll be talking about ghosts.
Cheer up everyone, I am looking forward to coming upon some watchful faces today.' continued
Mrs Chatterjee with a grin. The entire class wooed and cooed. Everyone then turned silent,
expecting Mrs Chatterjee to continue with her lecture.
Mrs Chatterjee was finally content with the rapt attention she had earned. 'Ghosts or
appearance of paranormal activities perceived by people gives rise to this subject…....However
though every fifty percent of people believe in the existence of such supernatural occurrences ,
such incidences are not approved by the scientific bodies. Nevertheless rationality has helped
us understand the abstract causes which leads some people to believe in their existence and
some to see them……….The main reason is toxic hallucinations. People's beliefs and the way
high electromagnetic fields affects the human mind may also make people see paranormal
incidences…………. Strangely, high electromagnetic radiations have been detected in places
considered to be highly haunted such as the Hampton Court.
But children, do not be disheartened, there have been some cases which till now have been
unexplained…….This includes the famous Tower of London which is reportedly haunted by
Annie Boelyn, the wife of King Henry VIII, the renowned scientist Benjamin Franklin also is
believed to haunt the library of the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia. The ghost of
America's sixteenth president is also known to frequently visit the White House……….
In other words it is the belief that ghosts or other natural beings are the wandering souls of
departed persons……….. As a child I too was scared of ghosts and used to cover my head with
blankets at night. Even so, no need to be scared of ghosts. Always remember, there are no
ghosts in this world, except for the ones we make for ourselves.' finished Mrs Chatterjee. At the
same time the bell rang indicating an end to the day's class.
'Hey Aarush do you believe ghosts exist? ' asked Darsh as the two headed home down the
Aurangzeb Avenue. Mrs Chatterjee had clearly captivated the whole class today with her
lecture. The moment Mrs Chatterjee announced she would be lecturing on ghosts, Aarush had
forgotten all about his grogginess and had absorbed everything which Mrs Chatterjee had to
say. He was still thinking about what happened in the graveyard the previous day.
'Uh-huh maybe, maybe not' answered Aarush as he turned down the street and went along his
home pondering over Mrs Chatterjee's last statement.
