Serenity task

3717 Words
A splash woke me from the deep coma that I fell into after my many moon runs. I am still me, I wonder how long I have been sleeping.  Searching for my human, she seems to be in a deep state of sleep. I know it's been more than a day or two because I woke up at some point to a song that was so melodic that it made me go into a deeper sleep than I would have liked. It made me feel vulnerable but I was helpless to do anything. I remember a girl with piercing brown eyes. I knew she wasn’t a wolf or anything I have ever come across before but I was too weak to move. I had a feeling they were here to protect me, no not me, someone else.  I try to wake Star but she doesn't budge or stir, panicking. I cry out to her still she doesn’t move, I can feel her resting. “Serenity,” the wind carried my name again. Lifting my head alert to my surroundings. Scanning looking for the person. The clouds above started to turn grey. Spinning in circles as the weather drastically changed and several splashes from the river caught my attention. There she was across the river, a gorgeous wolf. It was like her coat was a shimmering gloss like a kaleidoscope. She was mesmerising. There was a splash as she crossed the river, she turns her head as a beautiful lady emerge from the river beside her. The wolf licked the face of the woman in the river as they both came closer. The wolf transformed into a human woman like I do with my human Star. The wind picked up as she did. As Star would say this some freaky s**t. “Sister” they both exclaimed with a tight hug to each other. “I have missed you,” the woman in the river said. This was a personal moment, but I could not remove my eyes from the interaction happening in front of my eyes. WOW.  Bowing my head low, one paw in front the other. To show my respect.  “Rise, young wolf” I heard one say.  Lifting my head I noticed they were much closer.  “She is a perfect choice, Sister,” the woman in the river says, bringing my attention to her.  “I have watched over her like you ask, while she slept, I have also searched her heart. It is pure. I approved” I was confused as to what was going on but i was too shocked to speak and question either of them  “Step forward, young wolf, I know you have questions” the goddess spoke directly to me. Moving forward to the river bank as they both stepped forward. And the lady rose from the water. I noticed she had a tail but not like mine or any other land animal but that of a fish. She smiled in my direction as I stared at her shimmering scales, her finns, Star won’t believe this.  “Young wolf, it is time, you have been chosen to be one of my guardians, when the time comes you will be called on to protect. There will be one coming soon, my young one. You will have the power of the earth along with water. Use these to protect that of ours.” the goddess states.  “My daughter will need your help, she will give birth to land and water and they will need your help. She will not make it in time for my help and her mate has already been slayed. Her journey has already begun and ended, but theirs will start with you. Protect my heir.” the fish lady says.  “It is up to you to protect them now” the goddess states “She is almost here,”  the fish lady says. Finally finding my voice. I asked  “How will I know who I'm supposed to help and why me?” they smiled “Because, your heart along with your human has proven to be strong, brave and a heart so pure, there is no one else I would rather be my guardian, my sweet wolf”. “Step forward young wolf,” the lady of the river said.” moving forward with caution , she leaned forward and kissed me on my nose. A jolt of something took over my body.  It was strange. Now you have the powers of water along with your earth magic. The witch magic inside you is strong and now you have my blessing of water.” “Thank you” i managed to squeak out “It's time for me to go” the the fish lady says “One last thing, your mate is also on his way but you must not wait for him, I know you smell him but you must not linger, you will meet again, when it is time. His path is different from yours, he has his own challenges, to be your mate he must prove himself. When the time is right and you need him the most he will find you.” a whimper left my throat at the mention of my mate and the fact that I will have to leave him.  The fish lady splashed up water and disappeared as the goddess faded as she transferred into her wolf and howled. “We are with you always young wolf” was her last word as she faded into nothing as i jumped up on the huge boulder on the river bank and howled.  I jerked awake dazed and confused. A slight whimper released from my mouth. I was tired and I was still in my wolf form. I must have been dreaming.  {Star Pov} While Serenity slept for days, exhaustion flowed through me like a spell.  I could sense some freaky s**t happening around us but was paralysed to do anything about it. Today I felt reinvigorated, when we woke there were salmon on the boulder next to us. laid out for us, which was weird because I asked Serenity if she caught them and I slept through it somehow but she said no. Smelling them told me they were fresh and good to eat. Whoever was looking out for us, I thank them for saving me a job. I’m starving. Making a quick fire, I cooked my fish because not even Serenity likes raw fish. I wrapped some up and placed it in Serenity bag. We had two changes of clothes with us. We don't need much, most of the time I'm in wolf form so I have no need for clothes. Mac made Serenity a small backpack that fits on her back, which saves us in the last couple of days. It can only hold the essentials, but it works for us.  Yes. bathing time.  Taking off my dirty clothes reminds me that I need to stop at the next town and find a launderette. I place them on top of my bag-pack  and lower myself down into the water  singing to myself, but I swear someone has been watching me. I cleaned myself  and then relaxed on a large rock boulder like I'm a river mermaid, ‘I wonder if those are real like how werewolves are real. That thought made me pause for a moment like I was missing something vital . There was a splash in the water abruptly and I sat up straight. keeping my breath as still as possible. Sometimes my mind likes to run wild but I could swear I heard a noise. Scanning my surroundings to see what's out there, the splash came again and I noticed the salmon heading down river. That must have been it. A few seconds later I heard what sounded like a strike of agony, I listened closely for the sound again.  There was a noise that sounded like twig breaking, I jumped up and got my clothes on quickly ready to climb a tree to avoid any type of confrontation, I was not in the mood for anyone today. I really can’t deal with that kind of drama. I just want to shift and go for my run and rest. There it is again. I heard it, a whale of pain in the distance. Sounds like it is in pain, maybe someone in trouble, maybe they got caught up in a trap.  “It is time,” a distant voice spoke. I looked around for the person attached to the voice, so soothing and urgent. Which was weird. Jumping down from my hiding spot I darted through the trees, moving through the woods faster than a normal wolf should, I heard another sound that scared me out of my body when I realised it was just an owl that was whooting i clutched my proovuval pearls to my chest. I kept moving. Freaking feathered b***h. Moving quickly trying to keep my scent down wind I heard something dash through the bushes. The strong smell of copper floated on the wind, dammit, blood. Finally I come across what disturbs my evening.  “Fish” Serenity told me,  “Huh?” I was confused. She is a woman, she’s human. laying on the earth giving... birth. Oh my god, she’s giving birth.  “She's like that show you like with the fish woman with that annoying yellow fish.  She explains. Poorly “Finding Nemo?” I asked. Dori cracks me up all the time.  “No, the other one” but before I could comprehend what Serenity was saying the woman let out an awful sound. I ran over to try and help but she hisses at me. She hissed, okay maybe not a wolf, maybe a cat or a snake, oh God please don’t let it be a snake.  “I’m here to help just lay back, I grab a rock and hand it to her.” she flinched thinking i'm going to hurt her.   “Squeeze this when the pain starts again”.  Slowly I approach,  “I’m Star, you can trust me, I’m here to help okay”.  She nodded her head and let out a guttural growl. Yeah that looks painful.  “What's your name?” she was about to speak but it came out in another painful scream. She was beautiful minus all the sweat, tears, dirt and twigs in her hair. Her honey coloured skin tone looked like the sun kissed her skin leaving her tropical scent pronounced. Ok I’m going to just take a look. As I lifted her dress she screamed and I saw the baby’s head, and out it came, all bloody and gross. I nearly threw up, scratch that I threw up in my mouth. Taking my hoody off and wrapping the baby up as it cries as it takes its first breath. It’s a girl I say smiling as I try to hand her the baby she screams once again. What now? I looked at her in shock and concern. She screamed so loud I swear the entire woods heard her call. What happened next let's just say a heart attack at that moment would have been appropriate. It was like a scene from the movie Alien but from a vag. Just the memory makes me shudder. There is a claw coming out of her who-ha.  I know it's not a claw but a paw but it might as well be. God I'm going to throw up again and not in my mouth this time. She screamed again this time so loud it rattled the earth beneath us. A tiny wolf emerged, shocked and dazed are some of the words to sum up how I was feeling. I couldn’t move, I was frozen with fear, every scary movie ever made, told me that when something rips through another, it's safe to kill it, but I couldn’t because he was simply a whimpering ball of fur.  Her breathing became shallow and I could tell that was it for her, as her heart beat got slower and slower and there was no way to come back from the m******e that just happened. Again this some real life Freddy Krueger s**t happened.  I brought the baby over for her to hold as weak as she was; she begged me to care for her pups. Tears fell freely from both of us.  I picked up the pup who was taking clips of air into its lungs. Bringing the young pup to her so she could see him she named him Asher.  “Please. You must take them, please, save them.” She closed her eyes and never opened them again. She bled out right there on the ground, soaking the earth turning it crimson. I was frozen in time at the scene and situation I was now in, I was beyond emotional and lost for words. The baby cried out and I picked both up, rocking the best way I could. How am I supposed to care for them when I can barely take care of myself? I’m a selfish brat at the best of times.  ‘Its OK, it's going to be OK, little one, I got you”. Serenity was awestruck, she did something I wasn’t sure what she did, it was weird I can’t even describe it. But she marked them as hers, somehow. She is freaky weird sometimes. The tears finally stopped, scanning my surroundings to make sure it was safe. The sun was going down and I had nothing to feed them with. Ah s**t. I am not prepared for this s**t. I wasn’t sure about the protocol of what to do with a dead woman. I didn’t want to leave her out here in the open for anything or anyone to find so I buried.  “Return her to the river” Serenity says, and I nod my head as if she was next to me and not a part of me.  I dragged the body and the babies back to the river and covered her with rocks. Something told me that's where she belonged. Something Serenity said about her being a fish but I also knew that the babies would like to know their mother was taken care of after her death.  One day I would tell her children about her and bring them back to the area to visit. I wish I had somewhere I could go to visit my mom. The thought of my mother made me realise that I need to be what she would have been to me if she made it. I can be that. She also died during childbirth.  I will be what they need. Yes, my very own little family, my own pack. I promise I will be the very best mom you guys know, I will never let anyone hurt you I promise. Serenity growled her approval. ‘Their Mines, Ours.’ she growled.  Pulling out my phone I called Mac, for help because that is what I needed right now and a lot of it. I soothe them as best as I can. Nervous was an understatement, and panic finally set in as I hyperventilated as I held them and tried to keep them calm.   The tears kept flowing, not for the babies but because I missed the mother that I never got to know or be with. Walking to the closest main road to meet with Mac, took what seemed like hours, darkness fell and the moon was high in the sky shining bright lighting the way. I never had a problem seeing in the dark because of my shifter sight. But tonight the moon was a form of beacon. Lighting the way to the roads ahead.  The beam of headlights highlights me and the babies. I was covered in blood and sweat. The babies were fairly clean from the wash I gave them in the river. They seemed calmer when near the water or in it, so for most of the time that is what I had to do to soothe them to sleep.  “You look like you've been to hell and back” Mac stated. I sighed and got in the back with the babies.  Sixs months and hardly any sleep. I felt drained and out of my debt. Many times I have doubted myself. I take care of Princess and Serenity takes care of Asher. We shared duties, we were both spent. Mac has tried to hunt down the pack or pod that the baby's mother may be from but nothing yet, we came close I think, but that pack was too dangerous for the babies to return to. As for the pod, that's what he called the collective of merfolks, can you believe it mer-freaking -maids. The wolves tried to make a claim but after what they tried to do to Mac there was no way I would let my babies near that pack. For now I was theirs and they were mine, Pack.  A year later and it's their first birthday, as the small party sings to the twins I clap Princess hands together singing the birthday song. A bunch of Mac’s buddies came through and celebrated with us. We took a picture and placed it on the wall next to the picture of myself and the one of mom, in her uniform.  “Look what I’m doing mom” I say out loud. Staring at the wall filled with pictures of a bunch of strangers, shifters of all kinds, shifters with stories and adventures. The particular picture I was talking to though was a copy of the real one in a frame in my room, it was given to me by Mac. Mom used to work in this bar, this is where they met. Holding up both Asher and Princess showing them the wall of pictures.  Telling them the story of how I came to be, to the best of my knowledge. Having heard nothing from my father at all, and knowing what I know now I can't fathom how a person can be so callous about their children, the twins aren't from my womb but I would die for them. "     I wish you were here to see them mom, to be part of us, uncle Mac say you would be proud, I sure hope so,because sometime I feel lost, wish you were here. Wish I knew you. You would have been better at this mothering thing than me, I bet. I dream of you sometimes, before I knew what you look like, I used to make stuff up about you, you know. Sometimes you’re a spy working for the government, sometimes an astronaut out in space, exploring the galaxies. I have a weird imagination, but you know that, you're a witch. Something I had to find out the hard way. I miss you, even though we never knew each other, I still feel like I know you in some way. Mac says we have the same mischievous smile and twinkle in our eyes, whatever that means. Struggling to wipe away the lone tear from my eyes with the twins in arms. “It’s time to blow out your candles, little ones” they both squirmed in my arms and I released Asher and he took off sprinting and jumping all over Mac. We sang happy birthday to the twin and cheered as I assisted with blowing out the lone candle. The night came and I got the twins ready for bed. I sat on the rocking chair with my latest book, ‘Fused in Fire by K.F.Breene’ I’m in love with the characters of this story, she a badass supernatural like myself, she gives no f**k and apologies. She is my she-ro.     I kept up my training with Mac. My witch magic was still a little rusty but I picked up a new trick with water which Princess loved. It comes in handy at bath time. Whoever said dogs hate baths lied, this pup loves the water. The kids loved when I made seahorses move across the water, or make a ballerina dance. It was a pretty neat trick. Asher also loves going for a run with Mac’s Tasmanian devil. Mac has my poor little baby going through an obstacle course like an army cadet, but he gets up every morning before dawn to train with him, and at sunset when it's my turn to train. Princess on the other hand, she was all girl, dirt is equivalent to a swear word, when it comes to her.  At three years old, the twins are even much more than I can handle. Thank god for Mac and Serenity, because, damn, how do single mothers do this? I have Mac and his buddies at hand whenever I need help.  A young girl sat at the table in the corner. I noticed her as she ordered her water, since tap water was free and she was on her third water. Eyes on the food and cakes that everyone ordered. She was human, I could tell, I learned how to discern them now from my many visits to the cities. But how did she get all the way out here? Sliding a plate filled with food in front of her. I said “Eat” she looked up at me about to protest, but I walked off without a word. Mac asked me to get rid of her but I couldn’t. It was clear she was a runaway, I can relate. She was so thin and dirty she couldn't be more than 12 - 13.  As I stood behind the counter wrapping napkins around plastic utensils. The twins ran in from the outdoors Asher wrapped himself around my leg, but Princess didn’t, she went and sat by the human, Princess don’t speak to stranger or touch them because she was some type of sear according to Mac and a few of his fishy friends, I know crazy right merfolks aka mermaids are real. My mind is still blown by that, I just can’t watch the little mermaid with the same lens.
