PART 2

The next six months were the happiest Maya had experienced in years. Every morning began with a message from Ethan. Every evening ended with a phone call. Their lives slowly intertwined until it became difficult to imagine one without the other. Friends noticed the difference in Maya immediately. She smiled more. Laughed more. Dreamed more. For the first time in a long while, she looked genuinely happy. And Ethan felt exactly the same. One Saturday afternoon, he invited Maya to meet his family. The idea made her nervous. Very nervous. “What if they don’t like me?” she asked. Ethan laughed. “They’ll love you.” “You don’t know that.” “I do.” “How?” “Because I love you.” Maya froze. The words hung in the air. Neither had said them before. At least not out loud. Ethan looked surprised himself. As though the truth had escaped before he could stop it. For a second, silence filled the room. Then Maya smiled. A beautiful smile. One that reached her eyes. “I love you too.” Ethan’s heart nearly stopped. Neither of them remembered who moved first. Only that moments later they were wrapped in each other’s arms. And somehow everything felt right. Perfect. Like home. A week later Maya met Ethan’s parents. His mother welcomed her warmly. His father treated her kindly. By the end of dinner she felt as though she had known them forever. On the drive home, Ethan squeezed her hand. “Told you they’d love you.” Maya smiled. “You were right.” “I usually am.” She laughed. “Don’t get used to it.” Life seemed almost too good. Which was why neither noticed the storm approaching. It began with a phone call. Ethan was working late when his phone rang. The number looked familiar. Too familiar. His expression changed immediately. The moment he answered. The moment he heard her voice. Sophia. His ex-fiancée. The woman who had shattered his heart three years earlier. The woman he hadn’t spoken to in over a year. “Ethan.” His stomach tightened. “What do you want?” Her voice sounded shaky. “I need to see you.” “No.” “Please.” He closed his eyes. Whatever she wanted, it couldn’t be good. Yet against his better judgment, he agreed to meet her. The following day they sat across from each other in a quiet café. Sophia looked different. Older. Tired. Sad. For a moment Ethan almost didn’t recognize her. “You look well,” she said softly. “I’m doing fine.” A painful silence followed. Then Sophia took a deep breath. “I’m getting married.” Ethan nodded. “Congratulations.” “But before I do…” Her eyes filled with tears. “I needed to tell you something.” His chest tightened. “What?” Sophia looked down. “When I left you…” She swallowed hard. “It wasn’t because I stopped loving you.” Ethan frowned. “What are you talking about?” She wiped her eyes. “My father was sick.” Ethan froze. “He needed expensive treatment.” Her voice trembled. “I was desperate.” Slowly realization dawned. Sophia continued. “The man I married helped my family.” The truth hit Ethan like a wave. “You left me because of money?” Fresh tears fell down her cheeks. “I thought I was saving my family.” Ethan couldn’t speak. For years he had believed she simply stopped loving him. For years he carried anger. Heartbreak. Confusion. And now everything he thought he knew was changing. When he finally left the café, his mind felt chaotic. He didn’t know how to process what he’d learned. Unfortunately, Maya noticed immediately. Over the next few days Ethan became distant. Distracted. Quiet. Not because he loved Sophia. He didn’t. But because old wounds had reopened. Pain he thought had healed suddenly returned. Maya tried to understand. Yet worry grew inside her. One evening she finally asked. “Ethan, what’s wrong?” He hesitated. Then told her everything. The meeting. The conversation. The truth. Maya listened carefully. At first she remained calm. But one detail troubled her. “You met her alone?” Ethan nodded. “Yes.” “And you didn’t tell me beforehand?” “I didn’t think it mattered.” The answer hurt more than he realized. Maya forced a smile. “Okay.” But it wasn’t okay. For the first time since their relationship began, doubt appeared. Small at first. Barely noticeable. Yet powerful enough to grow. Over the following weeks tension increased. Not because Ethan wanted Sophia back. He didn’t. Not even slightly. But because Maya couldn’t ignore her fears. Every time Ethan seemed distracted, she wondered why. Every time his phone buzzed, questions appeared. The trust between them slowly weakened. Then came the misunderstanding that changed everything. One afternoon Maya arrived at Ethan’s office unexpectedly. She wanted to surprise him with lunch. Instead, she froze. Standing beside Ethan was Sophia. They were talking. Laughing. For a moment Maya couldn’t move. The sight felt like a knife twisting inside her chest. Before she could think clearly, she turned and walked away. Ethan never saw her. Hours later he discovered several missed calls. A text message. “We need to talk.” His stomach dropped. That evening they met at Maya’s apartment. The moment he entered, he knew something was wrong. “What happened?” Maya crossed her arms. “I saw you.” Ethan frowned. “Saw me?” “With Sophia.” Realization hit immediately. “Maya, it’s not what you think.” “Then explain it.” Ethan tried. He explained that Sophia had contacted him regarding a charity project. Explained that the meeting was brief. Professional. Meaningless. But Maya struggled to believe him. Not because Ethan was lying. Because fear was speaking louder than logic. The argument that followed became their worst. Words were exchanged. Feelings were hurt. Neither listened properly. Finally Maya whispered the sentence Ethan feared most. “Maybe we need some space.” The room fell silent. Ethan stared at her. “Do you mean that?” Tears filled Maya’s eyes. “I don’t know.” That answer hurt even more. For several seconds neither moved. Neither spoke. Neither knew how to fix what had broken. Then Ethan quietly nodded. “If that’s what you need.” And he left. The door closed behind him. The sound echoed through the apartment. Maya sank onto the couch. Tears streamed down her face. Meanwhile Ethan sat alone in his car. Heartbroken. Neither wanted the relationship to end. Yet neither knew how to stop the damage already done. For the next few weeks they barely spoke. Life continued. Work continued. But happiness disappeared. Every song reminded Maya of Ethan. Every place reminded Ethan of Maya. They missed each other constantly. Yet pride kept them apart. Then something unexpected happened. Maya’s mother became seriously ill. One evening Maya received a phone call from the hospital. Fear overwhelmed her. She rushed there immediately. Doctors assured her that her mother would recover. But the experience terrified her. Sitting alone in the hospital waiting room, Maya felt exhausted. Scared. Lost. Then she heard familiar footsteps. She looked up. Ethan. He walked toward her. Concern filled his eyes. The moment she saw him, tears returned. Without hesitation Ethan sat beside her. Took her hand. And simply stayed. No arguments. No accusations. No pride. Just support. The way love was supposed to be. For hours he remained there. Refusing to leave. Making sure she wasn’t alone. And slowly Maya remembered why she had fallen in love with him in the first place. Not because he was perfect. But because he cared. Because he showed up. Because he loved her even when things became difficult. By sunrise, her mother’s condition had stabilized. Relief flooded through Maya. She turned toward Ethan. Their eyes met. And for the first time in weeks, the walls between them began to crumble. Yet neither realized that an even bigger challenge was approaching. A challenge that would force them to decide whether their love was truly strong enough to survive. And this time, the choice could change everything.
