THE HOMEWORK DILEMMA

Setting: The stage is divided into two locations: 1. The Classroom – Desks arranged in rows, with a whiteboard and a teacher’s desk at the front. Students are finishing up their work as the bell is about to ring. 2. The Hallway – A space with lockers and students walking by, offering a quieter, more reflective atmosphere. Lighting: The classroom scenes are bright, energetic, and bustling, reflecting the typical classroom environment. The hallway is dimmer, highlighting Clara and Lacy’s emotional distance as tension builds between themselves [Scene 1: The Classroom – The Homework Incident] (The classroom is filled with students packing up their belongings as the bell rings. Clara is sitting at her desk, carefully gathering her papers and putting them into her bag. Lacy leans over from the desk next to Clara, her voice low and urgent.) Lacy: (whispering) Hey, Clara, can I see your homework real quick? I’m stuck on the last problem. Clara: (shaking her head) Lacy, I don’t know… I don’t think that’s a good idea. Lacy: (frustrated) Come on, Clara. It’s just one problem! I promise I won’t copy all of it. Just this one thing. Clara: (firmly) No, Lacy. You can’t just copy. The teacher will notice. We could both get in trouble. Lacy: (imploring) Please, Clara, I don’t get it. I’ll owe you one. Clara: (shaking her head) I can’t. I don’t want to get caught, and I don’t want you to either. (Lacy’s face hardens, and she sits back in her chair, visibly upset.) Lacy: (coldly) Whatever, Clara. If you’re not going to help me, fine. Clara: (softly) I’m sorry, Lacy. I’m just trying to do the right thing. (Lacy doesn’t respond and instead quickly gathers her things and leaves the classroom, leaving Clara staring after her, feeling a pang of guilt.) [Scene 2: The Hallway – The Aftermath] (Clara walks through the hallway, her books clutched to her chest. She notices Lacy ahead, talking to a group of students, but when Lacy sees Clara, she turns away and walks briskly in the opposite direction.) Clara: (calling out) Lacy! (Lacy doesn’t turn around. Clara hurries to catch up to her, but Lacy speeds up.) Clara: (concerned) Lacy, what’s wrong? Why are you acting like this? Lacy: (without looking at Clara) Nothing. Just forget it. Clara: (hurt) Lacy, don’t be like this. I didn’t mean to upset you. Lacy: (snapping) You don’t get it, Clara. I asked for your help, and you turned me down. It’s not like I was asking for the whole thing. Clara: (defensively) I couldn’t help you like that. It’s not right. We both need to do our own work. Lacy: (angry) Yeah, well, maybe I don’t need a friend who thinks they’re too good to help. Clara: (shocked) What? Lacy, I’m just trying to look out for both of us. Lacy: (coldly) Yeah, well, I don’t need your “looking out” right now. Just leave me alone. (Lacy walks away quickly, leaving Clara standing in the hallway, hurt and confused.) [Scene 3: Clara’s Reflection] (Clara sits on a bench in the hallway, her head in her hands. The stage is quiet except for the distant noise of students. She looks down at her homework, her face a mixture of frustration and sadness.) Clara: (to herself, softly) I didn’t mean to upset her. I just didn’t want to get in trouble... but now it feels like I’ve lost her. (She stares at the homework for a moment, lost in thought, before packing it away into her bag.) Clara: (whispering) Maybe I should’ve just helped. But I don’t want to be the one to make things worse. (She stands up slowly, walking toward the exit of the hallway, unsure of what to do next.) [Scene 4: The Reconciliation – Lacy’s Apology] (The next day in the cafeteria. Clara sits at a table alone, staring at her lunch. Lacy walks in, her eyes searching for Clara. She spots her and walks over, her face soft with regret.) Lacy: (gently) Clara… can we talk? Clara: (looking up, surprised) Lacy, I Lacy: (interrupting) I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have reacted like that. I was just frustrated, and I took it out on you. Clara: (softly) It’s okay. I understand why you were upset. But I wasn’t trying to be mean or anything. Lacy: (sitting down) I know. I just… I hate asking for help sometimes. I don’t want people to think I can’t do things on my own. Clara: (nodding) I get that. I just didn’t want us to get in trouble. You know how strict Mr. Douglas can be. Lacy: (sighing) I know. I should’ve just tried harder on my own. I’m sorry for blowing up at you. Clara: (smiling faintly) You’re my best friend, Lacy. I just want the best for you. Lacy: (softly) I want the best for you, too. I don’t want anything to come between us. (There’s a brief silence as they both look at each other, the tension finally starting to lift.) Clara: (smiling) We’re okay, right? Lacy: (grinning) Yeah. We’re definitely okay. (They share a hug, the reconciliation complete, as the scene faded
