[Scene 1: The Party Begins]
(Clara’s backyard is alive with laughter, music, and chatter. Guests mill around, enjoying the food, lights, and the inviting pool. Clara, wearing a light sundress, is with Ethan at the snack table, laughing at one of his jokes. Meanwhile, Lacy and Jake are closer to the pool, teasing each other.)
Ethan: (grinning) So, what’s the verdict? Best birthday party ever?
Clara: (laughing) Maybe not the best, but definitely up there. Thanks for coming.
Ethan: (teasing) Like I’d miss a chance to see you stress over decorations? Never.
(Clara playfully nudges him, her eyes scanning the crowd. She spots Lacy gesturing at her from across the pool.)
Lacy: (calling out) Clara! Come on over!
Clara: (to Ethan) Duty calls. Don’t eat all the cupcakes!
Ethan: (mock-seriously) No promises.
(Clara walks toward Lacy and Jake, who are bantering playfully. Lacy leans over the pool’s edge, teasing Jake.)
Lacy: (mocking) Admit it, Jake. You can’t even dog paddle without flailing like a toddler.
Jake: (defensive) At least I don’t scream like a banshee every time water touches my face.
Lacy: (smirking) Oh, really? Watch this!
(She pretends to dive but misjudges the wet edge and slips, tumbling into the pool with a splash.)
Lacy: (panicking) Help! I can’t swim!
Jake: (freezing) Lacy!
(Clara reacts instantly, kicking off her sandals and diving into the pool. The music fades as the guests turn to watch, gasping.)
Ethan: (running to the pool’s edge) Clara! Be careful!
(Clara reaches Lacy, who is thrashing and pulling Clara down in her panic.)
Clara: (calmly) Lacy, stop struggling! Let me help you!
(She grips Lacy firmly, swimming toward the edge despite the weight dragging her down. Ethan kneels at the edge, reaching out.)
Ethan: (urgently) I’ve got you! Take my hand!
(With Ethan’s help, Clara hoists Lacy out of the water, both of them collapsing onto the poolside. Lacy coughs and shivers, her face pale.)
Lacy: (weakly) I... I couldn’t breathe.
Clara: (panting) You’re safe now. Don’t try to talk.
(Jake finally snaps out of his shock and kneels beside Lacy.)
Jake: (guiltily) Lacy, I’m so sorry. I should’ve jumped in.
Lacy: (shivering) It’s... okay.
(Jake turns his gaze to Clara, his expression a mix of awe and guilt.)
Jake: (to Clara) You didn’t even hesitate. You were amazing.
Clara: (brushing it off) Anyone would’ve done the same.
Jake: (intently) No, not anyone.
(Lacy notices Jake’s lingering gaze on Clara and frowns slightly, her discomfort growing. Ethan steps in, wrapping a towel around Clara’s shoulders.)
Ethan: (gently) Are you okay? You’re shivering.
Clara: (nodding) Just cold, that’s all.
Ethan: (smiling softly) You’re incredible, you know that?
(Clara gives him a grateful smile, but the moment is interrupted by Lacy’s quiet voice.)
Lacy: (softly) Thank you, Clara. You didn’t have to do that, but... you did.
Clara: (kneeling beside her) Of course I did. You’re my best friend.
(The tension eases slightly as the guests begin to chatter again, but Lacy’s gaze flickers between Jake and Clara, suspicion clouding her expression.)
[Scene 2: Lacy’s Growing Doubts]
(Later that night, the party winds down. Lacy sits on a lounge chair wrapped in a towel, watching Jake and Clara from afar as they talk near the snacks table.)
Lacy: (to herself) Why is he looking at her like that?
(Jake’s gaze lingers on Clara as she laughs with Ethan. Lacy’s hands clench the edge of her towel.)
Jake: (to Clara) You didn’t just save Lacy. You saved the night.
Clara: (awkwardly) I just did what anyone would do. Really.
Jake: (softly) You’re incredible, Clara.
(Clara shifts uncomfortably, glancing at Ethan, who looks at Jake with a raised eyebrow.)
Ethan: (firmly) Clara’s not just brave. She’s loyal. And she knows where her priorities are.
(Jake nods but avoids Ethan’s pointed gaze. Clara changes the subject quickly.)
Clara: (forcing a smile) Anyway, I think I’ve had enough excitement for one night. Time to get these shoes dried out.
(As she walks away with Ethan, Jake watches her for a moment too long. Lacy notices, her jaw tightening as jealousy begins to creep in.)
