Setting:
The stage is divided into two locations. On one side is a school hallway with lockers and posters, a typical teenage setting. On the other side is a park bench, representing a place where Clara and her boyfriend can have private conversations and bond. The lighting shifts between soft, warm tones for the park scenes and cooler, more neutral lighting for the school scenes, reflecting the emotional shifts of Clara’s first relationship.
[Scene 1: Meeting the Boyfriend]
(The school hallway. Clara walks down the corridor, holding a stack of books. She glances up and notices Ethan, a charming boy with an easy smile, leaning against the lockers. He makes eye contact with her, and a spark seems to ignite between them. He steps forward, and they awkwardly smile at each other.)
Ethan: (casually) Hey, you’re Clara, right?
Clara: (nervously) Uh, yeah. How do you know my name?
Ethan: (grinning) We have a few classes together. I’m Ethan.
Clara: (nodding, trying to seem cool) Oh, right. I’ve seen you around.
Ethan: (playfully) Well, now you’ve seen me up close. (pauses) So, what do you think of this place?
Clara: (smiling, unsure) It’s… okay, I guess. Still figuring it out.
Ethan: (leaning in slightly) You know, it gets easier once you find the right people. Maybe I could be one of those people.
Clara: (blushing, softly) Maybe.
(They smile at each other, an undeniable connection forming between them. Ethan glances at his watch.)
Ethan: (gently) Well, I have to run, but I’ll catch you later?
Clara: (slightly flustered) Sure. Later.
(Ethan walks off. Clara watches him go, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. She shakes her head, trying to compose herself.)
[Scene 2: Moments of Joy]
(The park bench. Clara and Ethan sit together, laughing. Clara’s body language is relaxed, and Ethan seems completely engaged in their conversation.)
Ethan: (laughing) So, you really think you’re bad at painting?
Clara: (rolling her eyes) Well, compared to everyone here? Yeah.
Ethan: (grinning) You’ve gotta stop doing that—comparing yourself to others. Your work is great.
Clara: (smiling, shyly) You really think so?
Ethan: (gently teasing) Of course. You’ve got talent. You just have to trust it.
(Clara looks down at her lap, feeling a little shy but comforted by his words.)
Clara: (softly) I guess I’m still trying to figure out who I am, you know?
Ethan: (leaning in) I get that. But hey, I think you’re already pretty amazing.
(Clara looks up at him, her heart fluttering. They both fall silent for a moment, sharing a quiet but meaningful look.)
Clara: (almost in a whisper) I think I like you, Ethan.
Ethan: (grinning) I think I like you too, Clara.
(They sit together, the world around them fading as they continue to talk and laugh.)
[Scene 3: The Conflict]
(A few weeks later. Clara and Ethan are in the school hallway again. This time, there’s a noticeable tension between them. Clara stands by her locker, arms crossed, while Ethan stands a few steps away, looking uneasy.)
Clara: (angrily) So you didn’t even bother to text me back last night?
Ethan: (defensively) I was busy with homework. It’s not a big deal.
Clara: (hurt) It’s not just about one night, Ethan. It’s about feeling like I’m the last thing on your mind.
Ethan: (frustrated) That’s not true, Clara. I care about you.
Clara: (shaking her head) You don’t show it. You’ve been pulling away from me.
(They stand in silence for a moment, Clara’s face filled with confusion and hurt, while Ethan looks conflicted and frustrated.)
Ethan: (softly) I don’t want to hurt you, but sometimes it feels like you expect too much from me.
Clara: (hurt and shaking her head) I’m just asking for honesty, Ethan. If you don’t feel the same anymore, just say it.
Ethan: (sighing) Clara, I’m not saying that. I don’t know how to explain it… I care about you, but things have been moving so fast.
Clara: (stepping back, emotional) So, what now?
Ethan: (pausing) I don’t know. But we need to figure things out.
(Clara walks away, leaving Ethan standing there, feeling helpless.)
[Scene 4: A Lesson Learned]
(The park bench again. Clara sits alone, her sketchbook open but forgotten in her lap. She seems distant, reflecting on the events that transpired. Lacy enters from stage left, walking toward Clara.)
Lacy: (gently) Hey, you okay?
Clara: (looking up, sighing) I don’t know, Lacy. I thought I had it all figured out with Ethan, but now… it feels like I don’t even know who I am anymore.
Lacy: (sitting down next to Clara) Relationships are complicated, especially the first ones. But you’ve gotta remember—your worth isn’t tied to anyone else.
Clara: (softly) I know… It’s just hard when you care about someone.
Lacy: (nodding) I get that. But don’t lose yourself in someone else. You’ve got so much more to offer than just being someone’s girlfriend.
Clara: (nodding, thoughtful) You’re right. Maybe I just need to take a step back and focus on me for a while.
Lacy: (smiling) That’s the spirit. You’re amazing just as you are, Clara.
(Clara smiles, feeling a little lighter, and they both sit in quiet contemplation, watching the sun set together.)
