THE FIRST DAY

914 Words
Setting: The stage is split into two sections. On one side is the exterior of Westwood Academy, an impressive modern building with large windows, green spaces, and sculptures around. On the other side, there's a classroom with art supplies, posters, and open windows. A door in the center connects the two spaces. The lights are bright and energetic, signifying a new beginning. [Scene 1: The Arrival] (Clara enters stage left, walking nervously towards the grand entrance of Westwood Academy. She carries a backpack, looking up at the impressive building as if in awe. She takes a deep breath.) Clara: (to herself, quietly) This is it. (She steps forward and the sound of a bell rings in the background, signaling the start of the day. She hesitates for a moment before entering the building, her footsteps echoing as she walks across the stage.) Clara: (to herself, excitedly) Okay, Clara. You’re here. You’re ready. (She enters the building. A student, Emma, enters from the opposite side, walking with confidence and a friendly smile.) Emma: (noticing Clara) Hey, you new here? Clara: (nervously) Uh, yeah. First day. Emma: (grinning) Welcome! Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it. I’m Emma. You’re in the art program, right? Clara: (relieved) Yeah, I am! Emma: (gesturing to the building) You’ll love it here. This place is like a dream come true for people who love creativity. If you need anything, just ask. Clara: (smiling) Thanks, Emma. (Emma exits, and Clara stands still for a moment, feeling both nervous and excited. The lights shift to show the classroom on the other side of the stage.) [Scene 2: The First Class] (Clara walks into the classroom. The teacher, Mr. Langley, a middle-aged man with an artistic vibe, is organizing materials at the front. Students are chatting and settling into their seats. Clara stands at the door for a moment, taking it all in.) Mr. Langley: (noticing Clara) Ah, you must be Clara! Welcome. Don’t worry about being late, you’re just in time. Clara: (surprised) You knew I was coming? Mr. Langley: (smiling) Oh, we’ve been expecting you. I’m Mr. Langley. You’ll find that here, we all look out for each other. (Clara walks to an empty seat and sits down, glancing around the room. Some students look her way, while others continue talking. One student, Alex, a friendly-looking boy, gives her a small wave.) Alex: (casually) Hey, I’m Alex. You’re new, right? Clara: (nodding) Yeah, just transferred in. Alex: (grinning) Cool. You’ll love it here. Just wait until you see the art studio—we get to work with real materials, not just the cheap stuff. Clara: (grinning) That sounds amazing. (Mr. Langley claps his hands to gather the class’s attention.) Mr. Langley: (loudly) Alright, everyone! Let’s get started. Today’s first exercise is about capturing the essence of who we are through our art. No limits. Be free, be bold. (Clara looks at her sketchbook, feeling a mixture of excitement and pressure. As the students begin to work, Clara starts sketching, trying to channel her nerves into creativity. The sound of pencils and brushes fills the room.) [Scene 3: First Impressions] (The scene shifts to Clara walking through the campus after class, taking in the scenery. She passes by students chatting, painting murals, and performing in outdoor spaces. The atmosphere is vibrant and creative. She pauses to admire a large painting on the wall of the school building.) Clara: (to herself) This place... it’s like a dream. (A student, Maya, approaches with a paintbrush in hand, wiping her forehead.) Maya: (smiling) You must be new here. The painting’s still a work in progress. What do you think? Clara: (amazed) It’s incredible. Maya: (shrugging) Eh, it’s just something I started last week. But this place makes you want to keep creating. What’s your thing? Clara: (hesitating) I—uh—I like drawing, mostly. Portraits, landscapes... I want to get better at everything. Maya: (grinning) Well, if you stick around long enough, you’ll get there. This school pushes you. Just don’t let the pressure get to you. Clara: (thoughtfully) I guess it’s hard not to feel the pressure when everyone here is so good. Maya: (shrugging) It’s all about the process, not the end result. Trust me, you’ll find your rhythm. (Clara nods, feeling a bit more confident. She walks away, taking in the campus again, her excitement growing despite the nerves.) [Scene 4: A Quiet Moment of Doubt] (Later that evening, Clara is alone in her new room at a dorm or apartment, staring at the canvas in front of her. The lights are dim, and she looks at her sketchbook with mixed emotions. There’s a knock on the door, and Lucy enters, a backpack slung over her shoulder.) Lucy: (grinning) So, how’s the new life? Clara: (sighs) It’s amazing, but... I don’t know, I feel like I’m not good enough to be here. Lucy: (sitting beside her) You belong there, Clara. You wouldn’t have gotten in if you didn’t. Clara: (frustrated) It’s not just about getting in. It’s about being able to keep up. Everyone here is so talented. Lucy: (supportively) It’s normal to feel that way. But you’ve got something special. You just need to believe it too. Clara: (quietly) I’m scared I’m going to fail. Lucy: (firmly) You won’t fail. You’re Clara Harris. You’ve got this. (Clara looks at Lucy, her expression softening, and then back at the canvas. Slowly, she begins to sketch, her doubts easing with each stroke.)
