[Scene 1: The Tension Builds]
(The school bell rings, signaling the end of another class. Clara walks down the hallway, her mind preoccupied. She’s had a strange feeling all day, an uneasy sensation that something is off, especially after her conversation with Lacy. As she rounds the corner, she spots Jake waiting by her locker. His posture is different—more nervous than usual.)
Clara: (smiling politely) Hey, Jake.
Jake: (shifting, trying to sound casual) Hey, Clara. Uh, do you have a minute?
Clara: (pausing, sensing the tension) Yeah, sure. What’s up?
Jake: (hesitating) I... I wanted to talk to you about something.
(Clara raises an eyebrow, her stomach twisting slightly. She’s not sure what to expect, but she can already feel that this conversation isn’t going to be casual.)
Clara: (gently) What’s going on?
Jake: (taking a deep breath) I know this might seem out of nowhere, but I can’t stop thinking about you, Clara. You’ve been on my mind a lot lately, and I just—
Clara: (interrupting, her voice tightening) Jake, what are you talking about?
(Jake steps closer, his gaze unwavering.)
Jake: (softly) I think you know. Clara, I... I want to ask you out.
(Clara’s heart skips a beat, but she quickly recovers, a mixture of confusion and guilt flooding her thoughts.)
Clara: (stumbling over her words) What? Jake, I—
Jake: (urgently) I know you’re probably surprised, but it’s the truth. You’re amazing, Clara. You’re kind, smart, brave... Everything about you just stands out. I can’t help but admire you. I’ve been trying to ignore it, but I can’t anymore.
(Clara feels a rush of emotions: shock, confusion, and guilt. She glances over at Lacy’s locker down the hallway and catches a glimpse of her friend, who’s talking to some other students but seems to be glancing in her direction. Clara’s stomach churns.)
Clara: (softly) Jake, I... I can’t. You’re with Lacy.
Jake: (taking her hands, earnest) I know. But that’s the problem, Clara. I’ve been thinking about you more than I’ve been thinking about her.
Clara: (pulling her hands away) You can’t be serious. Jake, this isn’t right. You’re supposed to be with her.
Jake: (frustrated) I am with her, but I—
Clara: (shaking her head) No, Jake. This isn’t just about you and me. It’s about Lacy, and you’re hurting her.
(Jake stands there, his face falling slightly. He looks torn, but his determination remains.)
Jake: (pleading) But Clara, we could be something real. I know we could.
(Clara backs away slightly, her hands shaking with a mix of anger and fear.)
Clara: (firmly) No, Jake. I can’t be the one to come between you and Lacy.
(Jake’s expression falters as Clara turns away, her heart racing. She walks down the hallway, but her mind is in a whirlwind. She doesn’t know what’s worse: the fact that Jake actually tried to ask her out or the thought that she might have led him to think it was okay.)
[Scene 2: Lacy Finds Out]
(Later that afternoon, Clara meets Lacy outside the school, as they usually do after class. But today, Lacy’s eyes are sharper, more guarded, as if she already knows something is wrong.)
Lacy: (directly) So, what happened between you and Jake?
Clara: (startled) What do you mean?
Lacy: (coldly) Don’t play dumb. I saw you two talking earlier. You looked like you were having a serious conversation.
(Clara feels a pang of guilt twist in her stomach. She should have told Lacy right away, but the weight of Jake’s words still lingers in her mind.)
Clara: (softly) Lacy, I—
Lacy: (interrupting) He asked you out, didn’t he?
(Clara’s silence is all the confirmation Lacy needs. Her face hardens, and she steps back, her voice trembling slightly.)
Lacy: (hurt) How could you?
Clara: (quickly) Lacy, no! It’s not like that. I told him no, I swear! I didn’t want anything to happen between us.
Lacy: (bitterly) But you didn’t tell me. You didn’t think to tell me that Jake was thinking about you like that?
Clara: (guilt-ridden) I didn’t want to hurt you, Lacy. I was trying to figure out what to say to him.
Lacy: (tears welling up) And now I feel like I’m the last to know. You’re my best friend, Clara. How could you not tell me this right away?
Clara: (softly) I didn’t want to lose you.
Lacy: (turning away) I don’t know what to believe anymore. I need some time, Clara.
(Lacy walks away, leaving Clara standing there, feeling like she’s just lost everything. She wanted to do the right thing, but it felt like everything she did only made things worse.)
[Scene 3: Clara Reflects]
(That night, Clara sits alone in her room, reflecting on the day. She replays Jake’s confession in her mind over and over again, wondering how everything went so wrong. She can’t shake the guilt of how things have changed between her and Lacy.)
Clara: (to herself, quietly) Why did he have to do this? Why did he have to make everything so complicated?
(She sighs, feeling exhausted by the emotional weight of the situation. But as she looks at her phone, she sees a text from Jake, asking if they can talk.)
Clara: (sighing deeply) Not now, Jake.
(She deletes the message, staring at the blank screen. She doesn’t know what to do, but she knows one thing: she can’t keep running from this.)
