Chapter 36
Sammy pov
I honestly thought he would show back up last night, I kept checking out the bedroom window to see if I could see the huge black wolf out in the woods, but he never showed up. The sun was already up when I was sitting on the edge of the bed. I was thankful that I was off today. The memories of him jerking that guy around were just too much. For years I was on the run protecting myself, killing before they killed me or took me back to Sam. Now, I’m an alpha’s mate and all he wants to do is protect me.
“Calm down, he is new to this too, it’s nice to be protected.”
Rolling my eyes, I just shook my head.
‘Sal, what is going on with you, girl? You used to always say we are women, hear us roar, we don't need a man to protect us. So what’s going on with that? You're a powerful wolf. Just because Maddox is our mate doesn’t mean it gives him the right to punch drunk humans in the jaw. He could have really hurt that guy.’
‘Yeah, you’re right, but I’ve been bonding with his wolf. He’s sweet, tells me that I’m sexy, and wants us to go for a run together. He wants to see what I look like.’
You could easily put a picture in his head, Sal, but yeah, we will go for a run. I’ll ask him when he gets here and see what he says.
I knew he was close, I could smell his scent. Walking toward the living room, I opened the door before he even had the chance to knock. He held a cup of coffee in his hand, handing one to me.
“Peace offering.”
I took the cup, letting him inside, then I laid down the rules. If we were going to do this, we were going to do this right. I didn’t want him beating up anyone, so I told him,
“So have a seat, I need to talk to you about something.”
We sat at the dining room table as we drank our coffee, then I started talking.
“If we are going to do this, we are going to do this right. I don’t want you hiding and watching me every time I turn around. I don’t need protection. Maybe sometimes, but not all the time. I can handle things myself. I had been on the run for years, Maddox. I know how to fight, handle a gun, knife, or sword. You don’t need to have your guards watching me either, and yes, I have noticed. I don’t mind one or two, but not four or five. I had a life before you, Maddox. Not a good one, but I did have a life, and I’m trying to find my way again. I also want to say thank you for giving me my space last night. I needed it. Do you have anything to say?”
I could tell he was thinking about everything I had said. Was he going to fight me on this? Was he going to demand that he stay with me at all times? If he did that, this wasn’t going to work.
“I agree, I did go a little overboard on the humans yesterday. I’m sorry. I’m new at this mate thing. You see, when me and my cousin were in the pack, it was run by my parents until rogues caught us off guard. We weren’t prepared. They got onto the land, killed most of our people, then they killed my parents. After that, the grounds started dying, we couldn’t live there anymore, so we left. We formed our bonds, staying together even though we both told them to find other packs. They followed me and my cousin anyways. So you know how to handle a gun? That’s a sight I’d like to see one day. Two guards it is, but I didn’t realize you knew about that. I just wanted to make sure that you’re safe. So, what are you saying? Are you saying that you want this to work? You want to see where this goes?”
This guy was talking so fast that I was trying to keep up. He agreed to only two guards. I bet he would add an extra one and try for me not to see them. It would actually be funny.
‘Ask him if we could go for a run. I’m dying to run with his wolf.’
I was trying so hard not to laugh, but he heard me anyways.
“What are you laughing about?”
“Sal wants to go for a run with your wolf. That’s all she’s been talking about since I got up.”
‘I have not!’
“Yeah, you have, shut up.”
“Yeah, we can go for a run. I know King’s been dying to know what your wolf looks like. We can go now if you want.”
