Chapter 6: The Salvatore Brothers

904 Words
Lucian’s POV The room was silent. Too silent. Lucian Salvatore preferred silence. Noise was usually filled with lies. But tonight, the silence reminded him of one thing. Failure. He stood in his private office, staring at the documents spread across his desk. Files. Reports. Photographs. Years of investigation. And yet, after all this time, the truth remained hidden. Marcellus was supposed to be the answer. The final piece. The person who knew what happened the night Lucian lost his parents. But someone had taken that answer away. Lucian picked up another file and flipped through the pages. “Nothing.” His voice was low. “Nothing useful.” The men around him remained quiet. Nobody dared interrupt him when he was like this. The night his parents died had shaped every decision he made. Every enemy he destroyed. Every person he refused to trust. Someone had murdered his family. And he had spent years hunting the person responsible. Marcellus had been close. Too close. Which meant his death wasn’t a coincidence. Someone was cleaning up the past. The door opened. Matt entered carrying a laptop. “You missed something.” Lucian looked up. Matt placed the laptop on the desk. “I went through Marcellus’ personal records.” Lucian’s expression hardened. “Carefully?” Matt gave him a look. “You know me.” Lucian said nothing. Matt opened a file. “Marcellus kept his business records hidden, but there was one name that appeared repeatedly.” Lucian walked closer. “Who?” Matt turned the screen toward him. A picture appeared. A young woman. Lucian stared. “Star Marcellus.” For a moment, nothing happened. Then Lucian’s eyes narrowed. “His daughter.” Matt nodded. “The one person connected to him that nobody mentioned.” Lucian looked at the picture again. Why had Marcellus never mentioned her? Why had he hidden his own daughter? Unless… He was protecting her. Matt began scrolling through the information. “Star Marcellus. Human. No criminal record. No connection to the underground world.” Lucian listened carefully. “Her father kept her away from everything.” “Smart,” Lucian muttered. Matt continued. “She returned from a holiday shortly before Marcellus died.” Lucian looked at him. “Go on.” “She was with him the night of the masquerade.” A pause. “The last person he spoke to.” Lucian’s jaw tightened. “His final words were to her.” Matt nodded. “And then she disappeared.” Lucian turned toward him. “Disappeared?” Matt continued reading. “After Marcellus’ death, his assets were seized due to unpaid debts.” Lucian’s eyes darkened. “Debts?” “Yes.” Matt clicked another file. “Loan sharks took control of his remaining properties. Shortly after, Star was taken.” “By who?” Matt hesitated. Lucian noticed. “Say it.” “Ma Loyce.” The name was familiar. A dangerous woman who operated in the underground. “She runs an illegal network.” Matt looked at the screen. “Star was taken there.” Lucian remained silent. The image of Marcellus dying flashed through his mind. The Salvatores… Stay away… Why would a dying man warn his daughter about him? Unless he believed Lucian was the danger. Or unless he knew something Lucian didn’t. Matt continued. “She has been there for several days.” Lucian looked at the screen. “Explain.” Matt’s expression hardened. “Her father’s debts were transferred.” A cold silence filled the room. “And?” Matt looked at him. “She is being used to settle them.” Lucian understood immediately. His expression became unreadable. “How long?” “Tomorrow.” Matt closed the file. “There’s an auction.” The room became colder. Lucian stared at Star’s picture. The daughter of the man who died before revealing the truth. A woman who had no idea what world she had entered. A woman whose father’s last words had been about his family. Lucian didn’t know why. But something about it bothered him. Maybe it was because he knew what it felt like. To lose family. To have your entire world destroyed overnight. Matt watched him carefully. “What are your orders?” Lucian looked away from the screen. His decision was already made. “Prepare the cars.” Matt nodded. “Are we going after Ma Loyce?” Lucian put on his jacket. “No.” A pause. “We’re going for Star.” The auction hall was filled with people who believed everything had a price. Money. Power. Secrets. Lives. They whispered among themselves, waiting for the night’s entertainment to begin. Nobody noticed the change in the atmosphere when the doors opened. Nobody spoke. Because some names didn’t need introductions. Lucian Salvatore walked in. The room went silent. The most feared man in the city had arrived. And everyone knew one thing. Lucian Salvatore never entered a room without a reason. Behind the scenes, Star sat alone. The same darkness. The same fear. But this time… Something felt different. A strange feeling she couldn’t explain. Like the world was about to change. The door opened. Light entered the room. For the first time in days, she looked up. And somewhere outside that room… Lucian Salvatore stood waiting. The man her father warned her about. The man who might hold the answers to everything.
