Chapter 4

589 Words
Three days later, Kaycee Reed moved out of the Morales estate. Ethan hadn't signed the divorce papers. But Kaycee didn't wait for his permission. She had already spent five years waiting for things she couldn't control. She wasn't about to spend another day living under the same roof as him. Her new apartment was far from the Morales estate. Quiet. Private. Exactly how she wanted it. The moment Kaycee stepped inside, she closed the door behind her and let out a slow breath. For the first time since her release, she felt like she could breathe. No Ethan. No Isabella. No memories waiting around every corner. Just silence. She placed her keys on the table and walked toward a room at the end of the hallway. Unlike the rest of the apartment, this room remained locked. Kaycee stood in front of the door for a moment before pulling a small key from around her neck. Click. The door opened. And behind it was a completely different world. Canvases. Paintbrushes. Paints carefully arranged across shelves. Some paintings were covered with white cloth while others leaned against the walls. Kaycee slowly walked inside. Her fingers brushed against the edge of a canvas. A small smile appeared on her face. There was something about painting that had always made the world disappear. The noise. The expectations. The pain. Everything. Kaycee removed the cloth covering the largest painting in the room. A breathtaking image slowly appeared. A sunrise over a dark ocean. Light breaking through the shadows. Hope after darkness. In the bottom corner was a single signature. Dawn. Kaycee stared at it silently. Dawn. One of the most famous anonymous painters in the world. Her paintings had been displayed in galleries across different countries, admired by collectors and critics alike. Yet no one knew who Dawn truly was. No one had ever seen her face. And nine years ago— She disappeared. No more paintings. No more exhibitions. Nothing. The art world had spent years wondering what happened to the mysterious painter. Some believed she had died. Others believed she simply lost her passion. Nobody knew the truth. Kaycee Reed was Dawn. Nine years ago, she had been a rising young artist. Painting had been her entire world. Until Ethan Morales entered her life. The same day she accepted Ethan as her boyfriend was the day Dawn disappeared. Kaycee slowly sat in front of an empty canvas. She hadn't touched a brush in years. Not because she couldn't. But because every time she tried, memories followed. Ethan's smile. Their first date. The promises he made. Back then, Kaycee had believed love was enough. She had believed she could have both. Her dreams and Ethan. She had been wrong. Her eyes slowly moved toward the empty canvas. Five years in prison had taken almost everything from her. But perhaps it had also given her something. A reason to start again. Kaycee reached for a brush. For a few seconds, she simply held it. Then she dipped it into the paint. The first stroke touched the blank canvas. And something inside her shifted. For nine years, Dawn had been silent. But silence didn't mean she was gone. Kaycee looked at the colors spreading across the canvas. A faint smile touched her lips. Perhaps it was time. Time to reclaim the parts of herself she had abandoned. Kaycee Reed had returned. But somewhere beneath the name everyone knew— Dawn was about to return too. And this time, she had no intention of disappearing again.
