Grace's POV
The strain between Alexander and me developed throughout the course of the days. Finding my secret had rocked the basis of our already precarious relationship. But I was resolved to reveal Alexander the truth about my background and the sacrifices I had made, so defending us. To see the actual me behind the façade, I needed him.
One evening, after bedding Ethan and Noah, I discovered Alexander in his study fixating out the window. His profile is softly lit by the city lights, which accentuate the strain in his jaw. My heart thumping in my chest, I inhaled deeply and went toward him.
I spoke gently, disturbing the stillness, "Alexander." He turned to meet me, eyes wary. "We must discuss."
He nodded, pointing for me to settle in. I settled across from him and started to gather ideas. "I know you feel betrayed," I said, shakily. "But kindly let me explain why I kept the boys a secret."
His look stayed blank, but he nodded slightly to let me know to keep on.
"Five years ago, I was in a relationship with someone who seemed perfect," I said, my head returning to those days. "Everything changed though when I discovered I was pregnant. He departed not wanting the responsibilities. I was terrified, alone, and very definitely desperate. I chose to raise my children on my own since I couldn't bear to consider them growing up without a father.
Alexander's gaze softened, but he stayed quiet so I could go on.
"I barely made ends meet working several jobs to help them. Having employment at your firm seemed like a lifeline. I never intended to keep them from you, but over time I ran out of ideas about how to tell you. And so, when you suggested this marriage, I saw my boys would have a better life. If you learned the truth, I worried you would call off the arrangement."
He leaned forward with fierce attention. "Grace, why did you not trust me enough to tell me?"
Tears welled up in my eyes. "I feared Alexander. Fear of losing everything. I now see, though, that hiding them was a mistake. I'm sorry for injuring you. I wanted to shield my kids.
Breathing deeply, he ran a hand through his hair. "I know the reason you behaved as you did. But, even a marriage of convenience, the basis of every relationship is trust. If we lack that, nothing real can be built.
I nodded, blotting away my tears. "I am aware." And I'm ready to do all necessary to regain your confidence. I want us to be a family, a true family."
Alexander got up and came over to me, knelt down and grabbed my hands in his. "Grace, during these past few days I have come to see something. Originally a business transaction, this marriage evolved into something more along the road. More than I could ever have imagined, I love you. And I want to see Ethan and Noah as well as for us to make this work."
Looking into his eyes, hope sprang in my heart. "You mean that?"
He nodded, a little smile pulling at his lips' margins. Indeed I do. But going forward, we have to be honest with one another. No more secrets.
Feeling comfort flooded over me, I squeezed his hands. "No more secrets." I pledge.
The next several weeks were a swirl of changes and fresh closeness. Spending more time together, Alexander and I learned to negotiate our new family situation. He was amazing with the lads; seeing him with them brought happy aches in my heart.
Alexander looked at me gravely one evening as we sat in the living room following the twins' bed-making. "Grace, you need to know something."
My heart still missed a beat. "Where is it?"
He stopped momentarily before speaking. "My family has been so committed to our marriage for a reason. It goes beyond the business deal. I haven't told you anything more, but there is."
A cold crawled along my back. "What are you implying?"
Alex inhaled deeply. "An old family legacy passed down over generations exists here. One of the other requirements is that the heir has to be married and start a family. Should I fall short of these requirements, Victoria, my cousin, will inherit it.
As I worked through his statements, my mind ran. "Did Victoria know about this? She has been therefore quite driven to destroy our marriage.
His nod was deliberate. " Indeed. She will do all necessary to inherit for herself. She wants it.
I began to feel afraid. " What are we going to do?"
Alexander said decisively, "We're going to fight." "We'll show her our family and our solid marriage. But we should exercise caution. Victoria is dangerous; she won't stop till she has what she wants."
Alexander and I sought to fortify our bond and guard our family as the weeks stretched into months. Though we were resolved to meet whatever obstacles arose, we couldn't get rid of the impression Victoria was hiding in the shadows, just waiting for her opportunity to strike.
Alexander answered a call one evening just getting ready for bed. As he listened to the person on the other end of the call, his face clouded. He looked at me when he hung up, worried clearly on his face.
"What's it?" With a thumping heart, I asked.
His voice tight, he replied, "There's been a break-in at the office." "Someone stole private papers including those pertaining to our marriage and the inheritance."
Panic washed over me. "Do you suppose Victoria was it?"
He gave his nod. "Very likely is what it is. She knows she will inherit if she can show our marriage is a hoax.
I tightened my hands, fury raging inside me. "Alexander, we cannot let her prevail. We have to locate those records and stop her.
He drew me firmly into his arms. "We'll, Grace. We will, I guarantee you.
We started looking into the break-in the next day. Alexander paid a group of private investigators to find the pilfers of papers and expose any proof linking Victoria to the crime.
Days became weeks devoid of development. There was obvious tension, and I could see Alexander straining under it. We were alert all the time, waiting for Victoria to move.
Alexander's phone buzzed one evening as we were talking about the inquiry with a message. He read it, shock spreading in his eyes.
"What's wrong?!" My heart beating, I enquired.
"It's a lead," he added, sounding urgent. "One of the detectives came upon a witness at the workplace the evening of the break-in who saw someone fitting Victoria's description. We ought to see him.
We traveled to a remote café outside the city where the witness had agreed to meet us. The tense environment made it difficult for me to relax and I felt as though we were under observation.
Early thirties man came up to our table seeming apprehensive. Are you Mrs. and Mr. Knight?
Alexander gave a nod. " Indeed, we are. Do you know about the break-in?
The man looked about tensely then took a seat. "That evening, I noticed a woman at the office fitting Victoria's description. She was behaving suspiciously, glancing about as though she may be caught. At the time, I gave it little thought, but upon learning of the break-in, I knew it had to have been her."
" Could you testify to this?" With a sobering tone, Alexander asked.
The man stopped and then nodded. Indeed, I could. But you must guard me. Should she discover that I spoke with you, she could follow after me."
"We'll see to it you're safe," Alexander said. "Thanks for coming forward."
We had a strong lead at last with the evidence of the witness. Equipped with the proof meant to reveal Victoria's plots, we chose to face her.
Everyone was there for the family get-together confrontation. Ready to meet whatever lay ahead, Alexander and I stood side by side.
" Victoria," Alexander remarked, his voice commanding attention. We are aware of your activities. One of our witnesses saw you in the office the evening the break-in occurred.
Shock widened Victoria's eyes, but she rapidly straightened herself. Her voice chilly, she continued, "I don't know what you're talking about."
I said, going forward, "don't lie." "We are not shy to use our evidence."
The audience fell in a tense quiet as Victoria's front started to break. At last she laughed bitterly. Fine. Yes, I was present. Still, it's not important. The papers are nowhere to be found. And you can't prove anything without them.
Alexander's eyes contracted. "We'll check about that."
The next weeks were a haze of legal conflicts and thorough investigations. Alexander and I, though, stayed strong and together in our battle to safeguard our family and our future.
Alexander grabbed my hand one evening when we were seated in the living room. "We have come a great distance, haven't we?"
I grinned and tightened his hand. Indeed, we possess. And I would never swap it for anything.
He leaned in to give me a soft kiss on the forehead. "I adore you, Grace." And I swear we'll make it through. Taken together."
Looking into his eyes, I realized we would be facing obstacles side by side regardless of what was ahead.
