Grace's POV
Alexander and I were obviously uneasy the morning after our interrupted conversation. Knowing my time was limited, I could sense his irritation and curiosity. I had to work out how to tell him the truth about my boys before he came into it on his own.
Alexander's company was set to make a major merger with a fierce competitor, Harrington Industries. The board of Knight Enterprises requested Alexander lead a steady and tidy personal life and that this merger was extremely essential for their future. Though appearances only, our marriage was the secret to sealing the deal and silencing his meddling family.
As I walked into Alexander's office to review the next board meeting, the uneasiness that had crept into my gut stayed. "Good morning, Grace," he began, his voice shockingly austere. "We have to review the particulars for the merger presentation.
I nodded and forced a grin. Clearly, Alexander. Right here I have all the papers.
As we reviewed the presentation, I sensed his eyes fix on me. He seemed to be attempting to match the jigsaw of our shared lives. The questions bothered me, so I tried to remain cool.
Abruptly breaking the silence, he said, "Grace." " About last night... We have to finish our conversation."
My heart thumping, I looked up. I understand. It's simply... convoluted.
Either complicated or not, right now we cannot afford any deviations. Unity is much too important. Whichever it is, we have to live with it.
I inhaled deeply to steady myself. " I know. I will show you everything tonight. In line with the board conference.
He nodded, but his eyes showed obvious annoyance. "Okay. Tonight then.
The board meeting went as planned while my head was elsewhere. Grace's refusal to divulge her secret caused me diversion. That was rather crucial; what could she possibly be hiding?
Her grace and knowledge really amazed me when she interacted with the board members. She was perfect for this role, but I thought she was weak about something. The more I tried to reach her, the more evasive she became.
Resolved to uncover whatever she was hiding, that evening I returned home. Looking resigned, she was waiting for me as I arrived at our flat.
"Alexander," she responded, her voice steady yet faintly afraid. "I ought to let you know about my background."
My heart hammering in my chest, I gestured to tell her to sit. Go on.
She took a big breath while her hands shook. "Five years ago, I dated a man just fleetingly. It finished abruptly even though it was intense and passionate. Later , I decided to keep the babies after learning I was pregnant. Among my twin sons is Alexander. Five years old is their current age.
Her remarks come out like a cargo train. twins? My mind swirling, I got up. " Why not tell me this before?"
Tears flooding her eyes, she added, "I was scared." "I didn't know your answer. And I wanted to protect them."
I ran a hand through my hair trying to grasp this revelation. " Where are they right now?"
Her voice scarcely above a whisper, she said, "They're with my sister." "I visit them whenever I can."
Her secret tormented me, and I felt a weird sense of relief combined with guilt and treachery. "Why would you have approved of this marriage if you were hiding something so important?"
Her voice quivered, "Because I needed the security," she said. "for them here. From my end. And I gave some thought to maybe making it work.
I slid back into my chair, the weight of the situation crashing down upon me. Grace, this makes everything different.
Alexander's eyes showed a range of emotions I couldn't make sense of. I had been terrified and liberated at the same time for so long; now that this moment had arrived I felt both.
Tears washing down my cheeks, I whispered, "I'm sorry."
"I vowed not to fool you."
He stooped forward, his expression softening. Grace, you ought to have believed me. I can understand why, though, you did what you did. We will take care of this.
Although I understood this was merely the start, his remarks helped me relax. The revelation of my boys represented only one challenge we would have to face. And I couldn't get rid of the sensation that our troubles were far from gone, even if I wanted to pretend things would be good.
As I worked through Grace's confession, a fresh resolution grabbed hold. Although my personal life's stability was crucial, this marriage was definitely essential. Should we be successful, we had to present a united front, which meant confronting the secrets poised to drive us apart.
"Grace," I answered precisely and clearly. "We have to bring your boys right here. They cannot stay under wraps any more.
She looked at me, hope mixed with fear. "You seem confident. Here one runs a great danger.
"I am definitely sure," I said. "We are in this together, remember? You should consequently also be protecting your children.
Her eyes were obviously relieved, and I knew that we had begun along the road to a real life lived together despite all the challenges ahead.
The next couple days were an explosion of activity. Grace intended to bring her boys to New York, and I worked constantly to make sure the merger went without a hitch. Although the pressure was high, knowing Grace and I were at last in agreement gave me new direction.
Bringing my boys to New York worked out with Alexander, despite the logistical hassle. That day they arrived, I felt both eager and anxious. In this transformed life, how would they fit? How could Alexander integrate into their surroundings?
When I showed Alexander those, he changed. A father who really loved my children took the place of the ruthless businessman. This part of him had never previously shown itself; it gave me new hope.
Alexander said, "these are your new rooms," showing the lads around. "I expect you to enjoy them."
Their eyes gleamed with excitement, and I felt appreciation pour over me. This signaled the start of something real, something different.
But an office call interrupted the silence when I started to believe everything would be well. Finding our secret, Alexander's brother Damien threatened to show the board.
Damien's interference was scarcely necessary. He had always been a pain in my side, and now Grace's history was undercutting me. As I answered him in my office, I was furious.
"Damien, what do you regard to be your contribution?" I pressed on, my voice frozen.
He slanted back in his chair and smoked. "Brother, just trying to maximize the company's interests. The board has the right to know the truth about your minor layout."
"This is none of your business," I responded, snapping. "Grace and I control everything.
"Do you?" he asked, arching an eyebrow. "Based on where I stand, it seems like a disaster just ready to happen."
Tightening my grip, I tried to suppress my wrath. "Stay clear of this, Damien. I won't let you ruin what I have produced.
His smile widened, a predator sensing imperfection. "We'll see about that.".
His departing my office made clear that the battle was far from done. Damien's threat loomed over us like a black cloud; Grace and I would have to stand together, stronger than ever if we were to triumph.
The words of Damien's threat truly brought me down. I couldn't stand to think of my boys caught in the crossfire; the brittle calm we had found was under risk.
"Alexander," I said with a quivering voice. " What are we going to do?"
He took my hand, his strong grip soothing. "We'll fight this together, Grace. We will show the board that we are a team and that we can handle anything."
His confidence was contagious; it ignited hope in me again. We had come this far; I wasn't ready to give up just now.
As we prepared for the next board conference, I couldn't shake the impression that something important was going to happen.
The stakes were higher than they had ever been, and the stress was almost excruciating. But knowing Alexander was at my side, I believed we could handle anything that came our way.
The conference opened with the usual formality, but I could sense a stir of expectancy in the audience. Damien sat opposite from us, acting haughtily. As the merger came under discussion, I grew resolved.
"Before we go," Damien said, getting up. "I suppose the board should be aware of Alexander and Grace's marriage."
The room stopped and everyone turned to face us. I kept my head high, set to confront whatever lied ahead, even though my heart pounded in my chest.
Alexander stood forward, his voice clear and direct. "Our marriage goes beyond simple financial planning. It's teamwork based on respect and confidence. And we are better for it even if we have had challenges."
The board members related to his comments, and I could see nods of agreement around the table. Damian still had unresolved business, though.
"Is that so?" he spat out. "Then why not tell the board?
