Her body floated in the darkness….
Her eyes were shut, but she could hear the faint hums of… Something…
Where was she, she thought as she opened her eyes. She looked around, unable to make out anything as she simply floated in the ink-black void of emptiness.
Oh right, she remembered, she had died…
No, she had been killed….
By her fated mate, and her supposed best friend….
She had vowed to stop them, but it looked like that in itself was nothing more than an empty threat after all…
She had died…
The realization set in slowly as she curled into a ball, sobbing quietly to herself.
What was she going to do now…?
“Don't cry little one…”
A voice, almost like a whisper, echoed from the shadows.
Rachel looked up, wondering where that voice came from…
Footsteps…? She could hear faint footsteps in the distance. Rachel grimaced, raising an eyebrow as they got closer…
Someone was approaching….
Rachel furrowed her brows, wondering if the footsteps were all in her head as she had been floating this entire time due to there being no ground to walk on. But she was soon proven wrong as the silhouette of a person soon came into view
The person got closer, and as soon as Rachel saw the woman's face, her heart immediately melted..
It was someone she was familiar with…
“Mom?” Rachel gasped, holding back her tears as the woman came into full view. She was clad from head to toe in nothing but a pure white robe. A stark contrast from Rachel's battered clothes…
Rachel subconsciously waddled through the void towards the woman. However, as she got closer, she slowed down as soon as she noticed something.
She noticed the emptiness in the woman’s eyes…
“You’re… not my mother?” Rachel asked, a little confused. She wasn't sure how, but she could tell that there was something off about the woman in front of her.
Plus, this was certainly not how a mother was supposed to react to seeing her daughter again after more than a decade apart…
The woman simply smiled. “No child. I am Eris, a herald to the moon goddess, I merely took the form of the last person you thought of before your passing.”
In her last moments, she has subconsciously thought of her mother, wondering what the woman would have thought if she saw the current situation. That realization brought tears to her eyes…
“Where am I?” Rachel asked.
“Limbo.” The woman, who had introduced herself as Eris, simply answered. “The passage between the mortal plane and the spirit world. I was sent here to you by lady selene herself.” Eris turned to look at Rachel. “Your cries have reached her ears…”
On hearing that, Rachel gasped, unable to believe her ears. The moon goddess, Selene herself? Rachel had only heard about her in stories. One of the two deities responsible for the creation of the supernatural world, the progenitor of all werewolves. Selene was a primordial figure revered by not just werewolves, but almost every supernatural being in existence..
Which would then beg the million-dollar question….
What would an all-powerful deity such as the moon goddess want with someone like her….?
Eris smiled again, seeing the confused look on Rachel’s face. “Sweet child, you don't know what you are do you?” she reached out, stroking Rachel's brown hair. “Your work is still not finished yet.”
Rachel looked at her, confused. “What… What are you talking about…?” the whole thing didn't make a dime of sense to her….
Not one bit….
The woman, Eris, did not answer. Instead, she simply raised her head, looking into the horizon of the empty void “It is imminent,” she muttered, almost to herself. “They will be upon us soon,” she continued, turning her gaze back to Rachel, "You are still needed in the mortal world.”
That did not help Rachel's case at all. Instead, it made her even more confused than ever. “I’m sorry, but I don't understand what you are saying…” she voiced out honestly.
“If you want to head back to the human world, take that road.” The woman finally said something that Rachel understood. Eris raised her hand, pointing in the direction of a bright light which glowed in the horizon. She then turned to face Rachel. The small smile on her face had completely faded.
“Find the golden alpha….” she muttered, then turned around and began her walk back into the darkness….
“Eris?” Rachel called out, but the woman didn't answer. Instead, she just kept walking, seemingly heading back into the darkness she came from. “Eris? Eris! Where are you going!? Mom!!!!” Rachel called out repeatedly, the last one being an instinctive reflex as the woman looked exactly like her mother…
But it was all to no avail. The woman had already dissolved into the darkness, leaving Rachel all alone, floating in the empty void. She looked around eagerly searching for the woman that looked like her mother…
The bright light fell on her face once again, and she looked up to see its source, which was still in the distance. A new wave of confidence surging through her, she waded her way through the void and towards the source of the light….
Two thoughts present in her mind as she got closer…
Survive…
Live….
***
Rachel gasped loudly, awaking with a start as the air escaped her lungs. She looked around, studying her surroundings.
All she could make out was the rocky terrain and some trees. Her eyes trailed down, noticing that her bottom half was covered in the snow.
Where was she? She couldn't quite remember, she thought as she sat up, her eyes trailing to the top of a rocky steep
Which definitely looked like the edge of a cliff.
Then she did remember…
“Agh!” She groaned, rubbing her forehead as the memories came surging back in….
She had been betrayed by her best friend and her supposed fated mate, had been branded an omega and cast out of her pack for a crime she did not commit, and like that there wasn't enough suffering. Two weeks after that, she had been killed by her supposed best friend after being betrayed by her fated mate….
She touched her chest, the place where the bullet had gone right through her heart. She was sure she had died, she had been shot with a silver bullet that had been laced with wolfsbane, through her heart…
No living thing could survive that….
But she did…
How did she…?
Even she herself was confused. She had remembered everything fading to black and had heard voices after that, but she had been too hazy to remember.
She curled into a ball, sobbing quietly once again. She still wasn't sure of… Anything…
She had nowhere to go now, and she had just found out that the life she had led up until now, the life she had led with her best friend and fated mate, the simple life where everyone lived happily ever after…
Was it all a lie…?
She could remember Edwards' face as he looked her square in the eyes, telling her that he was going to kill her father to climb up the rank of alpha. A wave of emotion washed through her entire body.
Not sadness this time, rage….
She dragged herself to her feet, making her way of the cliff….
Before now, she only had one priority in mind, and that was to survive. But now, her mission has changed…
She didn't quite know how she had been brought back to life, but she knew one thing for certain.
This second chance at life had given her the opportunity to make good her earlier promise…
Her earlier promise of stopping Edward and Trina’s plans from succeeding…
She had to stop them from killing the only living family she had left. And with that thought in mind, she clenched her fist, crawled out of the cliff and made her way back to Silver Falls Park…
The pack that she had once been cast out of….
