Chapter 7 A Calculated Risk. Nova. “My… my keys?” Ron's words were slurred as he leaned back in his seat, his eyes were droopy. He looked as if he could sleep off at any moment. “They're… here,” he mumbled under his breath and his hands groped for his pockets. The drugs were kicking in I thought, a smile tugged at my lips as I stared at him in silence. It was beyond my expectations that the plan would go so smoothly and without any hitches. I felt a wave of hatred shoot through me as I stared at his features, he was a handsome man I thought. Too bad he had an evil heart, my eyes chilled as a whisper of Noras’s letter flashed through my mind. He'd put her in so much pain, and now? I stared at him, now he would face a little payback. I silently watched him for a while to be sure the drugs had taken hold before gently taking his car keys off him. I'd learned how to drive during my time at the university, so I turned the engine on without any problems as I drove away from the curb. My heart was beating erratically as I approached the gate, this was the last obstacle. My hands were sweaty as I gripped the steering wheel, I exhaled slowly as I tried to calm my tensed nerves. I could see two uniformed men standing at the entrance, they were checking every car that drove out. I rolled the car forward, glancing at the dimly lit security post. “Act natural, Nova,” I whispered under my breath as I rolled the car to a gentle halt. I hoped it was just a simple check. My heart thudded as I slid down the window, I glanced at Ron, I’d adjusted his seat to be flat so he looked fast asleep. I just hoped it wasn't going to arouse their suspicion. “Good evening,” I greeted, my tone curt. “What's the matter?” I added a tinge of impatience in my voice. My pulse quickened as I watched him approach, it took all of my will to keep my expression calm. His gaze drifted past me, lingering on the unconscious Ron. My heart skipped a beat. “What…” he began but I cut him off. “I don't have the time for this, officer.” My eyes hardened as I stared at him. “I and Mr…. I trailed off, sneaking a naughty look towards Ron’s figure. “We have an appointment to catch,” I blushed at the hidden meaning in my words. “Oh,” the guard was taken aback and he coughed awkwardly. “I didn't realize,” he stammered, taking a step back. “I just thought he didn't look good.” "He’s fine,” I said coolly, forcing a smile. “Just had a bit too much to drink.” The guard's eyes flickered and he nodded hurriedly, his eyes drifting toward the direction of Ron again “Are you sure? He doesn’t—” the guard was speaking but I cut him off. “Enough,” I snapped, my eyes raked over him. “If you wake him up with your noise I'll make you regret it,” my tone was harsh. I wasn't concerned that he'd recognize me after tonight. I was wearing heavy makeup, and a wig and I'd put on some props that made me look curvier than I was. “Now open the damn gate,” I snapped, watching as his eyes were shaky. His eyes widened slightly as he stared at me, I didn't back down, staring at him in the eye. I could feel my heart pumping in my chest as we faced off, I spotted approaching lights from a car coming from behind in the rearview mirror and my heart jumped to my throat. The time felt like forever before the guard finally relented. “Sorry for the delay ma'am, I didn't mean to bother you,” he flashed a smile at me. “I'll open the gate now.” I could barely hold the sigh of relief that shot through me as watched him open the gate. I kept my expression cold as I drove past the gates, my foot pressing on the gas as we picked up speed. That was close I thought, as I wiped my sweaty palm on my clothes. The worst was past I smiled to myself, imagining the regret Ron would feel at missing his meeting. He deserved it and more. I glanced at him, he was still fast asleep. But I needed to be fast, I wouldn't want him rousing when we hadn't gotten to the arranged location. He’d caused so much pain, so much destruction. Nora’s face flashed in my mind, the tears, the scars—he had to pay. I arrived at the location, it was our family cabin nestled in the woods. We used the cabin for our summer retreats until Mother had fallen sick. The place had been abandoned for ages, it would be perfect for what I wanted to do. My nerves were heightened as I parked, the silence of the empty area looming on me. Ron was still unconscious, the effects of the drug still holding strong. I exhaled shakily, and my pulse quickened with excitement. It took a tough few minutes to drag him out of the car and into the cabin, I left him out cold on the floor. I'd broken out in sweat already but I didn't stop moving, I chained him up, securing his hands to a metal column. I grabbed a bottle of water from the car and drank greedily, gulping it down. “Who would've thought you'd be here now…” I murmured before I yanked his hair and with a sharp, deliberate motion, I splashed the entire contents of the bottle across his face. Ron's reaction was immediate and he gasped, sputtering and blinking as his drowsiness wore off. “Wha—where…” he stammered, his voice hoarse. He tried to sit up, but I pushed him back against the wall. “Shut up,” I spat, stepping closer until I was towering over him. My eyes bored into his, “You couldn't have imagined waking up to find yourself here could you?” My heart ached and rage fumed within me as I stared at him. He was the man who'd put Nora in so much pain. “What… who are you?” His eyes narrowed as he stared at me, suspicion clear in his eyes. I felt faintly annoyed that he didn't display any fear as he looked at me. I leaned down, my face inches from his. “Do you remember Nora?” I whispered, my voice cold as ice. “Because I do. And so will you.”
