Chapter 8 – Dangerous Temptation

462 Words
We were in the woods, miles from the cabin, tracking the last of the rogues. The snow fell silently, muffling our steps. “You should rest,” Rylan said. “I’m fine,” I shot back. His smirk was slow, dangerous. “Fine enough to keep up with me?” The challenge in his voice made my pulse spike. I didn’t notice the root beneath the snow until my foot caught and I stumbled — right into him. He caught me, one arm around my waist, the other braced against the tree behind me. We were too close. My breath hitched as his gaze dropped to my lips. For a moment, the world was silent but for our breathing. “You make it hard to stay in control,” he murmured. My voice was barely a whisper. “Then don’t.” His lips brushed mine — a whisper of a kiss — before he pulled back with a growl, shoving away from the tree. “Not yet, little wolf. When I take you, there’ll be no going back.” The words burned hotter than the kiss ever could The snowflakes settled softly on my skin, but my whole body felt electrified, every nerve screaming in anticipation. I searched his face, trying to read the fire behind those golden eyes. “I’m not afraid,” I whispered, though the truth was tangled somewhere between fear and desire. Rylan’s smirk deepened, but there was something softer lurking beneath — a promise I wasn’t sure I was ready for. “You should be.” He stepped closer, his breath ghosting over my cheek. “Because once I claim you, there’s no turning back. No safety. Just the pack… and me.” I swallowed hard, my heart pounding like a war drum. “And if I want that?” The tension broke as his grin turned predatory. “Then you’d better be ready to fight for it. Because everything that hunts us… wants to tear you away from me.” Before I could respond, a sudden snap echoed through the trees — the unmistakable sound of someone—or something—moving fast through the snow. Rylan’s body went rigid, every muscle coiling like a spring. “Stay behind me.” I nodded, gripping the hilt of the dagger at my side, every sense on high alert. From the shadows, glowing eyes emerged — not one pair, but three, stalking us through the falling snow. The rogues were closing in. Rylan’s growl rumbled through the clearing. “This ends tonight.” As he shifted, powerful and terrifying, I felt the bond tighten, our fates entwined like the claws of the curse — but also the promise of something stronger. Tonight, nothing would be the same again.
