Chapter 3
The next afternoon Brian had told me about an opening out in the woods not too far from here. I grab one of my books and a blanket just before I set out to leave. I need some relaxation. I start walking toward the forest and off to my left in the distance were men doing jumping jacks while another man watches them. They were training for something that is probably none of my business at the moment. I walk through the forest for a while and find the opening. Everything is so beautiful, the green grass, the large oak tree in the middle. Flowers of all colors bloomed in patches around the area. I walk towards to the big tree and place the blanket down. I look back at the forest around me feeling like I’m not alone. I don’t see anything so I sit down against the tree and open my book.
I start to feel like I’m being watched about my 4th chapter in. I look up slightly and see eyes staring back at me from the forest. Living out in the country, streets, or even a place like this, I’ve learned to never be scared of an animal. They can help you or eat you, either one you have to stand up to it if it is hostel or relax if shows it’s no harm. Sometimes animals are just curious about something that has entered their territory. I look back at my book hoping it’s something friendly. I read a few more pages and slightly look up again.
A beautiful black with silver mixed fur shines in the light as a large wolf walks across the opening of the field in front of me. I slowly brought my book down getting on my knees looking at the beautiful wolf. As the wolf came over to me it stops about 5 feet away from me. We stare at each other and its tail swings back and forth. It shows me its fangs growling lightly. Remember Myr don’t challenge a predator. I moved my hair on to my back. I look away from the wolf to the side showing my neck. I kept my hands down to my sides. The growling stops and I move my eyes back over still showing my neck to the wolf so I can see its paws. The paws get closer and I calm my breathing. I was so excited about seeing a wolf in person. I feel warm breath on my neck and then a wet tongue on my face. I see the wolf sit I didn’t move still showing my neck not wanting it to get scared of me moving. I hear a whine come from the wolf and I look at it. We lock eyes and it whines again.
I sit straight up and the wolf is still taller than me. “You are so beautiful.” I whisper lifting up my hand. I stop as it looks at it. I don’t think this wolf want’s my scent on it. I was about to put it back down when it places its snout against my hand. I smile with excitement. “I’m sorry if I scare you or do anything you don’t like, but I’m just so excited to meet you.” I tell it. It tilts its head toward me like it was trying to understand me. I smile at the wolf it places a paw on my shoulder and see a silver line of fur from its chest lead to its stomach. That’s when I found out it’s a boy.
“You are a handsome boy you know that. Now do you have a name? What am I doing he can’t talk…” Thought a moment and he moves his paw off of me. “Oh I know I’ll guess your name and you let me know if it’s right.” He snorts at me like he’s agreeing with me. “Cody?” Nothing. “Travis? Spike? Andrew? Midnight? Bret? George?” He still didn’t react. I sat there and stared at him. For some reason Mr. Knight popped into my head. “Okay may be Knight? The wolf tilts his head again but I wanted to try Brian and see how he reacted. “Brian.” His tail swooped back and forth and he barks at me.
“Well Brian that’s weird. I’ll never forget your name because my boss’s name is Brian…Unless you are him and he’s a werewolf from like the books and movies.” I say laughing. “I have something to show you if you promise not to tell anyone.” Brian lays down in front of me but keeps his head up which is level with my head now. I pull out my neckless that my mother game me before she left. “This is my most prized possession. I never take this off. My mother had given it to me before she left me.” I can see the wolf looking at my neckless and sniffing it. “You remind me of it.” I say to him still looking at it. It’s a silver chain that comes down between my breasts. The pendent is circular with a black wolf that has a sliver line down its chest. It stands on a cliff howling upward. “My mother had told me never to forget the ones that watch and protect. On the back of this says ‘NEVER 4GET THE TRUTH’ I don’t know what it means but one day I will. I put the neckless back in my shirt and lean against the tree.
“Brian if you want you can lay here with me unless you have somewhere to go.” Brian gets up and walks next to me making 2 circles before sitting. He looks around and lays down. “Don’t worry Brian as far as what I’ve seen here this place is under real protection. High security and there is always someone somewhere. Nothing is going to happen to us.” I pick up my book and continue to read.
I wake up and it’s almost dark out. Brian had left me laying here by myself. ‘I’ll try to come out here tomorrow and see if he’ll come to me again.’ I thought grabbing my book and blanket so I can head back home. I stop at the tree line and turn back around. I’ll try and come back tomorrow Brian.” I say loud enough for my voice to carry hoping he’ll hear me.
I make it back to the mansion and walk through the side doors. I walk through a living room area where people were sitting around and talking. Some of them see me and smile. I smile back but I want to go back to my room and rest a bit. I might have had a nap but I’m still tired. I take the long stairs up to my room and it feels like someone’s watching me. I make it down the hall to my room and that feeling that someone is watching me intensifies. I go into my room shutting and locking the door behind me. I fold the blanket placing it next to me on a chair sliding the book on the small table across from it. I jump onto the bed completely forgetting about my stitches. I felt the pain and held in a scream. I roll over to my back holding my breast so that the pain could dull.
I hear the door knob jiggle and I sat up. I held in my breathe hoping that it would stop. I knew Brian was here but I didn’t know where. The knob stopped moving and I hear footstep walk away. I let the air out I was holding and lay back down. I was staring up at the ceiling thinking about the wolf and how gentle he was. I’m happy I made a friend even though it was an animal. I hear something behind me and I jump off the bed. I look to the wall and Brian stands there with a door open behind him. His face has anger written all over it. He shuts the door behind him and walks over to me.
“Why is the door locked!?” He yells at me pointing to the main door to my room. His voice sends fear through my body, he has never yelled at me like this. “Are you going to answer me!?” I sat down on the bed unable to keep my knees from shaking.
“Wwhen I was coming…down the hall way.” I swallow not looking at him. He shifts in his standing position. “It felt like someone was watching me and I got scared…that’s why I locked it.” I put my hands in my lap still trying to ignore the pain in my chest.
“Why didn’t you go to someone for help?” He asks in a deep but angry voice that made me wince a little.
“I didn’t know what to do so that’s why I came in here. I’m still not use to this place.” I tell him feeling a tear escape my eye. I hear him let out a sigh and he sat next to me on the bed.
“I’m sorry I got worried. How was your time outside?” I thought about what I should say with him getting angry about a locked door he might get even angrier with me hanging with a large wolf even if he shares the same name.
“It was relaxing. Thank you for telling me about it. I would like to go tomorrow if you would let me?”
“I’m glad you like it. Yes you can go their tomorrow. For now on for your safety do to wild animals out there I want you to ask me first before you go out to that spot.” I nod my head. “Have you eaten yet?”
“No. I was going to get a sandwich but there’s a lot of people down there and didn’t want to be a bother.”
“You are not a bother.” He says getting upset. “How about I take you somewhere?”
“Oh no I think I should stay here just in case.” I tell him looking at him.
“Why?” His face turned to worry.
“I’m having a bit of pain because I forgot I had stitches and flopped on to the bed.” I see Brian face palm himself and I knew he wanted to say something but he stopped himself. He stands up grabbing my hand to make me stand up with him. He pulls me to follow him into the bathroom. He turns the light on and stops in the middle of the room. He grabs the bottom of my shirt and starts pulling it up.
“What are you doing?” I say grabbing his hands.
“Let me see it.”
“What do you mean?” What did he want to do? I started freaking out. He cups his hands are my face.
“Calm, I just want to see the stitches to see if you need to see the doc or not.” His face is so close to me his hot breath brushed against my lips. I nod my head in agreement. I lift my shirt just to show him the side where the stitches are.
“They’re a bit red but everything seems fine.” I put my shirt down and he walks out of the bathroom. I follow shutting the light off. “Come with me and we’ll get something to eat.”
I follow him out of the room and to the kitchen. He spoke to a cook and then a maid. Brian took me to a room off of the kitchen that has a small table and a screened in porch. The sun is setting in the distance lighting the area up with an orange tint. I sit down at one of the chairs Brian sat next to me.
“So what does my job intend?” I ask him.
“Everything. You let me know about meetings, people that come and go at all of my businesses. You’ll be in charge of some of the financial side and you will follow me around when I travel or go to any of my buildings. Yes I know you’re not fond of people but that shell of yours will have to bend a bit. I need someone like you.” I fumble with the bottom of my shirt as he told me about what I’ll be doing.
“Why do you think I can do stuff like that?”
“Faith and of things you told me over the years that you can do. You’ll be wonderful at the job. I can understand it’ll be a bit rocky at first. Once you get the system down I believe you’ll be a natural.” He tells me. I want to object but our food comes in. We both start to eat our food in silence.
Brian gets a phone call as we walk out of the small room and stops me. He talks a bit and puts his phone away. He tells me he has something to do so he leaves me standing there alone. I decide to take my leave and head to my room. I take shower and get ready for bed. The moment my head hit the pillow I fell asleep.
Later in the night I thought I felt the bed move but I was so tired I didn’t think about it. As I slept I felt something warm around my waist and back. The warmth made me feel safe and loved but at the same time a little scared because I didn’t understand it. I drift further into sleep soon after.
