Sophia Weds Daniel

1718 Words
The first time Adrian Cole looked at me, I felt like I had done something wrong. Even though I hadn’t. The ballroom glittered with a kind of luxury I had only ever seen in magazines. Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceiling like frozen fireworks, casting soft golden light across the marble floor. The air smelled faintly of roses and expensive perfume. Waiters in white gloves moved gracefully through the crowd, carrying trays of champagne and delicate desserts that looked too beautiful to eat. Everywhere I looked, people were smiling. Laughing. Celebrating. But none of it felt real to me. Because tonight wasn’t just any wedding. Tonight was my sister’s wedding. And not just to anyone. Sophia Hart—my older sister—had just married Daniel Cole, the heir to one of the richest and most powerful families in the city. The Cole family didn’t just have money. They had influence. Power. Connections that stretched into politics, business, and industries most people never even heard about. And now Sophia was part of that world. I leaned lightly against the balcony door, holding a champagne glass between my fingers. The cool glass helped calm my nerves. The music swelled across the ballroom as the bride and groom stepped onto the dance floor for their first dance. Guests gathered around them, smiling as cameras flashed from every direction. Sophia looked breathtaking. Her wedding dress shimmered under the chandelier lights, each crystal sewn into the fabric catching the glow like tiny stars. Her dark hair was styled perfectly, and her smile radiated pure happiness. She looked like someone who belonged in this world. Someone who had always been meant for this life of wealth and glamour. I felt a small smile tug at my lips. Sophia had always dreamed big. Even when we were kids. While I imagined a quiet life with a stable job and a small apartment, Sophia dreamed about luxury, travel, and success. She wanted a life that was bigger than anything our family had ever known. And tonight… She had it. A soft sigh escaped my lips as I took a small sip of champagne. Maybe things would change for our family now. Maybe Sophia’s new life would open doors for all of us. Maybe— “You look like you’re planning your escape.” The deep voice behind me made my heart jump. I turned around quickly. And instantly froze. The man standing there was easily the most intimidating person I had ever seen. Tall. Broad shoulders. Dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit that probably cost more than everything in my closet combined. But it wasn’t just his appearance that caught my attention. It was his eyes. Cold gray. Sharp. Observant. Like he could see through people the moment he looked at them. “You’re staring,” he said calmly. My cheeks warmed immediately. “I wasn’t staring.” One eyebrow lifted slightly. “You were.” I opened my mouth to argue but then stopped. Because technically… he wasn’t wrong. “Fine,” I admitted. “Maybe a little.” A faint smile appeared on his lips. The expression was subtle. But it softened the intimidating sharpness of his face. “For the record,” he said, “I was staring too.” I blinked. “You were?” “Yes.” “Why?” He tilted his head slightly as he studied me. “Because you’re the only person in this room who looks uncomfortable.” I glanced around the ballroom. Elegant women in designer gowns laughed confidently while businessmen discussed deals over champagne. Photographers moved through the crowd capturing every glamorous moment. Everyone looked like they belonged. Everyone except me. “I guess I’m not very good at hiding it,” I said. “No,” he replied. “You’re not.” There was no mockery in his tone. Just simple honesty. Which somehow made me feel less embarrassed. “You must think I’m strange,” I said. “Why?” “Because I’m standing in a corner during my own sister’s wedding.” His gaze sharpened slightly. “Your sister?” “The bride.” Understanding flickered across his expression. “That explains it.” “Explains what?” “Why you look like you don’t belong here.” I crossed my arms. “That’s not exactly comforting.” “It wasn’t meant to be insulting. And you have the same eyes.” I blinked. “Really?” “Yes.” I sighed. “I know.” He studied me for another moment before speaking again. “You’re different from the other guests.” “How?” “They’re trying very hard to impress someone.” His eyes drifted across the ballroom briefly. “You’re not.” I shrugged. “I wouldn’t even know who to impress.” He gave a quiet chuckle. “That might be the smartest strategy here.” For a moment, neither of us spoke. The music continued playing while the crowd applauded Sophia and Daniel’s dance. I glanced back toward the dance floor. Sophia looked so happy. Then I remembered something important. I turned back to the man in front of me. “I never asked your name.” His expression shifted slightly. “Adrian.” “Adrian what?” “Cole.” The name hit me like a sudden gust of cold wind. Cole. Of course. He was part of the family. “The groom’s brother,” I said slowly. “Yes.” My stomach twisted slightly. Great. So the mysterious man I had been casually chatting with was actually one of the most powerful people in the room. I cleared my throat awkwardly. “I probably should have guessed.” “Why?” “Because you look like you own the place.” Another faint smile appeared. “Technically, my family does.” “Right.” I suddenly became very aware of how casual I had been speaking to him. He didn’t seem offended though. If anything, he looked amused. “And you are?” he asked. “Lena.” “Just Lena?” “Lena Hart.” I glanced toward the dance floor again. Sophia and I had always been told we looked alike growing up. But tonight she looked like royalty. And I looked like… well… Just me. “You don’t seem impressed,” Adrian said suddenly. “With what?” “With my last name.” I shrugged. “Should I be?” Most women here probably would have been. But something about Adrian Cole made me stubborn. He studied my face carefully. Then he stepped a little closer. Not enough to invade my space. But enough that I could smell his cologne. Dark. Warm. Dangerous. “You’re honest,” he said quietly. “That’s usually a problem.” “Not tonight.” Our eyes met again. And something strange happened. The room felt quieter. The music softer. Like everything around us had faded. I broke eye contact first. “I should probably go congratulate my sister,” I said quickly. Adrian didn’t move aside immediately. Instead he asked something unexpected. “Are you enjoying the wedding?” I hesitated. “It’s beautiful.” “That’s not what I asked.” His voice was calm but perceptive. Like he could hear the difference between politeness and truth. I sighed. “It’s overwhelming.” “How so?” “There are a lot of important people here.” “And that makes you uncomfortable?” “A little.” He considered that. “Most of them are pretending.” “Pretending?” “To be more important than they actually are.” I laughed softly. “You sound like you don’t like them very much.” “I don’t.” “Then why attend the wedding?” His expression shifted slightly. “Family obligation.” Something about the way he said it made me curious. But before I could ask anything else— “Lena!” Sophia’s voice suddenly cut through the conversation. I turned just in time to see her walking toward us, her wedding dress flowing elegantly across the floor. Her face lit up when she reached me. “There you are! I’ve been looking everywhere.” Then she noticed Adrian. “Oh—Adrian.” Her tone changed slightly. More formal. More careful. “You two have met?” “Yes,” Adrian said. His gaze briefly returned to me. “We have.” Sophia smiled politely. “Lena, this is Adrian Cole. Daniel’s younger brother.” I nodded. “He already told me.” Sophia looked relieved. “Well, good. Adrian rarely introduces himself first.” “That’s because most introductions are unnecessary,” he said calmly. Sophia laughed lightly. “That sounds like you.” She squeezed my hand excitedly. “Can you believe tonight actually happened?” “You look amazing,” I told her honestly. Her eyes sparkled with happiness. “Thank you.” Then Daniel called her from across the room. “Coming!” she replied. She turned back to me quickly. “Don’t disappear on me, okay? I want to introduce you to some people later.” “I’ll try.” Sophia smiled and hurried back to her new husband. I watched her go. Then I realized Adrian was still standing beside me. Watching me again. “You care about her,” he said quietly. “She’s my sister.” “Most siblings aren’t that supportive.” I frowned slightly. “What does that mean?” “Nothing.” His gaze drifted toward the dance floor where Sophia and Daniel stood together. Then he looked back at me. Something unreadable flashed through his eyes. “You should enjoy the celebration,” he said as he stepped past me and disappeared into the crowd. Leaving me standing there with a strange feeling in my chest. And for some reason… I couldn’t stop thinking about the way Adrian Cole had looked at me. If only I knew that look would change everything. Because months from now… My sister would look at me with tears in her eyes and whisper the words that would destroy our family forever. “You betrayed me… with my husband’s brother.” And the worst part? She wouldn’t be wrong.
