EPISODE 3 — THE LETTER

652 Words
The trouble began on a Tuesday. Elena arrived at work and noticed Noah wasn’t there. She checked her phone. No message. At noon, still nothing. At three, she finally received a text. I need to leave town for a few days. Something came up. I’m sorry. She stared at the message. She typed: Is everything okay? The reply came several minutes later. I’ll explain when I come back. That was all. For the next five days, Elena heard nothing. She told herself she didn’t care. She cared. She told herself they were only friends. That was becoming harder to believe. On the sixth day, Noah returned. He looked exhausted. Elena found him standing alone in the office hallway. “What happened?” He looked at her. “Can we talk?” She nodded. They went outside. For several seconds, Noah said nothing. Then he handed her an envelope. “What’s this?” “A letter.” “For me?” “Yes.” She opened it. Inside was a single sheet of paper. Elena, There are things I should have told you sooner. The woman I told you about—the one I loved—was my fiancée. Elena stopped reading. Her heart dropped. She continued. We were supposed to get married three years ago. Two months before the wedding, she died in an accident. Elena’s eyes filled with tears. For a long time, I thought loving someone again meant betraying her memory. So I stopped trying. Then you came into my life. And somehow, without trying, you made everything feel alive again. Elena’s hands trembled. I didn’t leave town because I stopped caring about you. I left because I was afraid of how much I cared. She stopped. Noah was watching her. “Why didn’t you tell me?” “I was afraid.” “Of me?” “No.” “Then what?” “Of losing you.” Elena looked down at the letter. “You can’t lose someone you never had.” “I know.” His voice broke slightly. “That was the problem.” Silence filled the space between them. Elena wiped her eyes. “Do you love me?” Noah looked at her. For the first time, there was no smile. No joke. No hesitation. “Yes.” One word. Simple. Terrifying. Beautiful. Elena’s heart pounded. “I love you too.” Noah closed his eyes. For a moment, he looked relieved. Then he stepped closer. “Are you sure?” “No.” He laughed softly. “I don’t think anyone is ever completely sure.” Elena smiled through her tears. “So what happens now?” “I don’t know.” “That’s not very romantic.” “I’ve never been good at romance.” “You work in publishing.” “That doesn’t mean I understand it.” She laughed. He reached for her hand. Slowly. Giving her time to pull away. She didn’t. Their fingers intertwined. It was such a small gesture. But for both of them, it felt enormous. ⸻ Their first date was terrible. They went to a fancy restaurant. The waiter spilled water on Noah. The food took forty minutes. Elena accidentally dropped her fork. Noah ordered something he couldn’t pronounce and hated it. They laughed the entire night. On the way home, it started raining. Elena stopped. “No.” Noah looked at her. “What?” “Rain.” He smiled. Then he reached into his car. He pulled out a red umbrella. Elena stared. “You still have that?” “Of course.” “The first umbrella?” “The one from the café.” She smiled. “You kept it?” “Yeah.” “Why?” He opened it. “Because it was the first day I met you.” They walked beneath it together. This time, neither of them got wet.
