EPISODE 5 — THE WAY HOME

716 Words
Two years later, Elena stood beneath the same café roof where she had first met Noah. It was raining. Of course it was raining. She looked at the street. The café had changed. The old sign had been replaced. The tables were different. But the memories remained. She smiled. Then she heard a familiar voice. “You’re still terrible at checking the weather.” Elena turned. Noah stood there. Holding the red umbrella. She stared at him. “What are you doing here?” “I live here now.” Her eyes widened. “You came back?” He nodded. “I got the position in New York, but I transferred back.” “When?” “Yesterday.” “You didn’t tell me.” “I wanted to surprise you.” She looked at him. “Why?” He stepped closer. “Because I have something to ask you.” Elena’s heart started racing. “Noah…” He reached into his coat pocket. He pulled out a small black box. She covered her mouth. He smiled. “I’ve been thinking about this for a while.” She laughed through tears. “Apparently, you think too much.” “Probably.” He opened the box. Inside was a simple ring. Not extravagant. Not enormous. Just beautiful. “Elena Reyes,” he said, “you were the unexpected chapter of my life.” She laughed. “That sounds terrible.” “Wait.” He smiled. “You were the chapter I never knew I needed.” Her eyes filled with tears. “You taught me that loving someone doesn’t mean forgetting the people we’ve lost. It means making room for new love without erasing the old.” He took her hand. “You taught me how to live again.” She cried. “Noah…” “I don’t know what the next chapter looks like.” He paused. “But I know I want to write it with you.” She looked at the ring. Then at him. “Yes.” He blinked. “I haven’t finished.” “Yes.” “You’re supposed to let me ask the question.” “I know.” She laughed. “Yes, Noah.” He smiled. “Will you marry me?” “Yes.” He slipped the ring onto her finger. Then he pulled her close. Rain fell around them. The red umbrella sheltered them from the storm. Just like it had years ago. ──────── One Year Later Elena stood in front of a small audience holding a book. Her first novel. The title was printed in gold letters. WHEN THE RAIN BRINGS YOU BACK Noah stood in the back of the room. He smiled proudly. The book was dedicated to him. And beneath his name was another dedication. For everyone who has loved, lost, and found the courage to love again. After the reading, Noah approached her. “You stole my umbrella.” Elena looked confused. “What?” He pointed toward the corner. The old red umbrella was there. “You kept it?” “Of course.” “You’re sentimental.” “Only about important things.” He smiled. “Am I important?” She pretended to think. “Sometimes.” “Sometimes?” She laughed. “You know you’re important.” He wrapped his arms around her. “I missed you.” “I saw you twenty minutes ago.” “Still.” She rested her head against his chest. Outside, rain began falling again. Noah looked toward the window. “It’s always raining when something important happens to us.” Elena smiled. “Maybe the rain brought you back.” He kissed her forehead. “Maybe it did.” They stood together by the window, watching the rain. Years ago, Elena had believed that some people entered your life only to leave. Now she understood something different. Some people arrived unexpectedly. Some stayed. Some taught you how to let go. And some— if you were lucky— found their way back to you. No matter how far they traveled. No matter how long it took. No matter how many storms came between you. Because sometimes love wasn’t about never losing each other. Sometimes love was about always finding the way home. THE END
