Chapter 33 – The First Move
The palace was quiet that evening.
Long corridors stretched under soft golden light. Servants moved silently, their steps careful, their eyes lowered.
Jin Woo walked through the halls with steady steps.
He did not rush.
He did not hesitate.
The royal summons was clear.
He was expected.
And he had no reason to refuse.
—
The large doors opened.
Inside, the air felt heavier.
More controlled.
More dangerous.
—
At the center of the room sat the Emperor.
Calm. Observing.
A man whose presence alone held authority.
—
Jin Woo stepped forward.
Then bowed.
Deep and respectful.
—
“Jin Woo greets His Majesty.”
—
“Rise.”
The Emperor’s voice was steady.
Jin Woo stood.
His expression calm.
His eyes lowered just enough to show respect.
But not weakness.
—
“You have been gone for a long time,” the Emperor said.
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
—
“And now you return without notice.”
Jin Woo remained silent for a moment.
Then replied,
“I believed my return would not cause concern.”
—
The Emperor watched him carefully.
For a long moment.
—
“It does not,” he said slowly.
“But it brings questions.”
—
Jin Woo did not respond.
—
The Emperor leaned back slightly.
“Your work in the past was... impressive.”
A pause.
“Many still remember it.”
—
“I am honored.”
—
Silence followed.
—
Then the Emperor spoke again.
“You have changed.”
—
This time, Jin Woo lifted his eyes slightly.
Not enough to challenge.
But enough to meet the words.
—
“Time changes many things.”
—
The Emperor studied him.
Carefully.
—
“And what has time changed in you?”
—
Jin Woo did not answer immediately.
His gaze lowered again.
—
“Nothing that affects my duty.”
—
The answer was perfect.
Simple.
Controlled.
—
But it did not fully satisfy.
—
The Emperor’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“Is that so?”
—
Jin Woo remained still.
—
Another moment of silence passed.
—
Then the Emperor spoke again.
“You will return to your previous position.”
—
Jin Woo bowed again.
“I will serve with loyalty.”
—
The Emperor’s gaze remained on him.
Heavy.
Searching.
—
“See that you do.”
—
The meeting ended.
—
Jin Woo turned and walked out.
His steps steady.
His face unchanged.
—
But as soon as the doors closed behind him—
His eyes shifted.
Slightly.
—
Not toward the guards.
Not toward the servants.
—
But toward a shadowed corridor.
—
Someone was watching.
—
The feeling was clear.
Sharp.
Familiar.
—
Jin Woo continued walking.
As if he had noticed nothing.
—
But his mind was already moving.
—
Later that night—
He stood alone in his room.
The window open.
Cold air flowing inside.
—
His gaze was on the palace.
Far in the distance.
—
Lights flickered behind the high walls.
A place filled with secrets.
—
Jin Woo’s expression remained calm.
—
“They are watching already.”
He spoke quietly.
—
There was no one to answer.
—
But he did not need one.
—
A soft knock came at the door.
—
“Enter.”
—
A servant stepped in.
Careful.
Respectful.
—
“My lord, someone has sent this.”
He placed a small scroll on the table.
Then left.
—
Jin Woo walked forward.
Picked it up.
—
No name.
No seal.
—
He opened it slowly.
—
Only a few words were written.
—
“You should not have come back.”
—
Jin Woo read it once.
Then again.
—
His expression did not change.
—
But his fingers tightened slightly.
—
After a moment—
He folded the paper.
—
Then placed it near the candle.
—
The flame touched it.
Slowly.
—
The paper burned.
Turning to ash.
—
“Too late.”
He said quietly.
—
His eyes lifted again.
Toward the palace.
—
Far away—
In a quiet room—
A figure stood by the window.
Looking at the same night sky.
—
“…So you returned.”
A soft voice.
Calm.
But not at ease.
—
“You never learn.”
—
A faint smile appeared.
Cold.
—
“We will see how long you last this time.”
—
Back in his room—
Jin Woo stood still.
—
The wind moved the curtain slightly.
—
His shadow stretched across the floor.
Long.
Unmoving.
—
Inside him—
Everything was quiet.
—
But that quiet held something dangerous.
—
Because the first move had already been made.
And no one knew who truly started the game.
