📖Chapter 29 – The Silence After The night did not end. It only grew heavier. Dark clouds covered the sky, hiding even the faintest light of the moon. The wind had calmed, but the silence it left behind felt worse. It was deep. Empty. Like something had been taken away from the world itself. Inside Ara’s house… nothing moved. The broken door hung slightly open. The cold air slipped inside without resistance. The small lamp that once gave light had gone out, leaving the room in darkness. Everything felt still. Too still. — Far away, Jin Woo did not stop. His horse was tired, its breath heavy, but he kept going. “Faster,” he said, his voice tight. His hands gripped the reins hard. His heart would not calm down. That feeling inside him… it only grew stronger. It was no longer just unease. It was fear. The kind that made it hard to breathe. The kind that made his chest feel tight. He had never felt like this before. Not even in his hardest days. Not even when he had nothing. “…Ara, please…” He whispered again. His voice almost breaking. — The sky slowly began to lighten. Morning was coming. But it did not bring peace. — Back in the town, the first people to wake noticed something was wrong. A door left open. A house too quiet. A place that should have had life… but did not. A woman passing by stopped. She frowned. “Ara?” She called out softly. No answer. She stepped closer. The door creaked as she pushed it open a little more. “Ara? Are you inside?” Still nothing. Her heart began to beat faster. She stepped in. Slowly. Carefully. — And then— A scream. Loud. Sharp. It broke the silence of the morning. — Not long after, people began to gather. Voices filled the street. Whispers. Shock. Fear. Minho pushed through the crowd. “What happened?” he asked quickly. No one answered him directly. Some looked away. Some looked at him with wide eyes. His heart dropped. “…Move.” His voice turned serious. He stepped forward. Into the house. — The moment he entered— He froze. His body went still. His eyes widened. “…No…” The word slipped out of his mouth without control. The room was in chaos. Things were broken. The back door shattered. And in the middle of it— Ara. Lying still. Too still. — Minho rushed forward. “Ara!” He fell to his knees beside her. His hands shook as he reached out. “Ara, wake up… please…” His voice broke. But she did not move. Did not respond. — People gathered at the door. Some covered their mouths. Some turned away. The air felt heavy. No one dared to speak loudly anymore. — Minho’s hands trembled as he held her. His eyes filled with tears. “This… this can’t be…” His voice was barely a whisper now. His mind refused to accept it. — Outside, someone ran. Fast. Toward the road. Toward the path leading out of town. Because there was only one person who needed to know. One person who had the right to know first. — Jin Woo. — The sun had risen halfway when Jin Woo finally reached the edge of the town. His horse slowed down on its own. Exhausted. But Jin Woo did not wait. He got down quickly. His feet hit the ground hard. And without stopping— He ran. — Something felt wrong. The town felt… different. Too quiet. Too tense. People stood in groups. Whispering. Looking toward one direction. Toward his house. — His steps slowed. Just for a second. His heart began to pound louder. “No…” He whispered. His breath became uneven. “No… no…” — Then he ran again. Faster. Pushing past people. Ignoring their looks. Ignoring their silence. — “Jin Woo—” Someone tried to stop him. But he didn’t listen. He couldn’t. — When he reached the house— He stopped. His body froze. His eyes fixed on the broken door. On the crowd. On the silence. — “…Ara?” His voice was soft. Too soft. Like he was afraid to say it louder. Afraid of what answer he might get. — No one replied. No one moved. — Jin Woo stepped forward. One step. Then another. His legs felt heavy. Like something was holding him back. But he kept going. — Inside the house— He saw them. Minho. On the ground. Holding someone. — His breath stopped. His vision blurred. “…No…” He whispered. — Step by step— He moved closer. Each step felt like falling into darkness. — “Jin Woo…” Minho’s voice broke as he looked up. Tears streamed down his face. “I… I’m sorry…” — Jin Woo didn’t hear the rest. He couldn’t. Because now— He saw her. — Ara. — Lying in Minho’s arms. Still. Silent. — Something inside him broke. Completely. — His knees gave out. He fell to the ground. Slowly. Like all strength had left his body. — “No…” His voice came out weak. Barely a sound. — He reached out. His hands shaking. Slowly touching her face. Cold. Too cold. — “Ara…” He called her name again. This time louder. More desperate. “Wake up…” His voice cracked. “Please… wake up…” — But she didn’t move. — Tears fell from his eyes. One after another. He shook his head. “No… this is not real…” His voice trembled. “You promised…” His hand tightened slightly around hers. “You said you would wait for me…” — His breathing became uneven. Almost painful. — “Look at me…” He whispered. “I’m here now… Ara… I’m here…” — Silence. Only silence answered him. — Minho looked away. Unable to watch. Unable to say anything. — Jin Woo slowly pulled her into his arms. Holding her close. Tightly. As if he could bring her back like this. As if he could refuse reality. — “I was late…” He whispered. His voice hollow. “I was too late…” — The room felt heavier. The air harder to breathe. — Outside, the wind picked up again. Soft. Cold. — And somewhere deep inside Jin Woo— Something changed. Something dark. Something cold. — His tears slowly stopped. Not because the pain was gone. But because it had turned into something else. — His eyes lifted slowly. Empty. Quiet. But filled with something dangerous. — “…Who…” He whispered. His voice low. Almost calm. — “…Who did this?” — No one answered. — But Jin Woo already knew. Deep inside— He already knew. — His arms tightened around Ara one last time. His eyes closed briefly. — And when they opened again— They were no longer the same. — The man who once lived for love… Was gone. — Only silence remained. And the beginning of something far more terrifying.
