Chapter 35 The Calm Before the Storm The next few days passed in quiet routine. Jin Woo attended the court as expected. He spoke when needed and remained silent when it was better to observe. Nothing in his behavior seemed unusual. That was exactly what he wanted. No sudden moves. No visible intentions. Only patience. The court slowly adjusted to his presence again. Some officials grew comfortable. Others remained cautious. But all of them were watching. Jin Woo knew this. And he allowed it. Every glance, every whisper, every small reaction was noted in his mind. He was not here to act quickly. He was here to understand everything. — One afternoon, he was called to review official records. Stacks of documents were placed before him. Land reports, tax records, court decisions from the past years. He read them one by one. Slowly. Carefully. Looking for patterns. Looking for changes. Looking for anything that did not belong. — At first, everything seemed normal. But the more he read, the clearer it became. Small changes. Subtle shifts. People placed in positions they did not deserve. Decisions that favored certain groups again and again. — Jin Woo closed one document and picked up another. His expression did not change. But his thoughts moved quickly. — This was not random. This was control. Quiet control. Hidden behind normal decisions. — His fingers tapped lightly on the table. Once. Then stopped. — “So this is how it has been.” His voice was low. Almost thoughtful. — He continued reading. Each piece added to the picture forming in his mind. — By the time he finished, the sun was already setting. The room had grown dim. — Jin Woo stood up and walked to the window. The sky was turning darker. Lights began to appear across the capital. — “It runs deeper than I thought.” — His reflection stared back at him. Calm. Cold. — That evening, he left his residence without announcing it. No guards. No servants. — He walked through the streets like an ordinary man. Simple clothing. Unnoticed. — The city at night was different. More honest. More careless. — Voices were louder. People spoke freely. — Jin Woo listened as he walked. He passed by small shops, quiet alleys, crowded corners. — “…taxes have increased again…” “…only certain families are benefiting…” “…no one dares to speak…” — Fragments of truth. Hidden in everyday complaints. — Jin Woo did not stop. But every word stayed with him. — He reached a quiet street and paused. A small tea house stood at the corner. Familiar. — For a moment, he simply looked at it. — Then he stepped inside. — The air was warm. Soft light filled the space. Only a few people were there. — Jin Woo chose a corner seat. Silent. — A cup of tea was placed before him. He did not drink it immediately. — Instead, his eyes moved across the room. — Two men spoke quietly near the window. A woman sat alone, lost in thought. The owner moved slowly behind the counter. — Nothing seemed unusual. — And yet. — Jin Woo reached for the cup. Paused. — Then placed it back down. Untouched. — His gaze shifted slightly. Toward the entrance. — Someone had just entered. — The presence was different. Controlled. Careful. — Jin Woo did not turn fully. Only enough to see without being obvious. — A man. Well dressed. But trying not to stand out. — Their eyes met for a brief moment. — Then the man looked away. — Jin Woo’s expression did not change. — But his mind had already made a decision. — After a few minutes, he stood up. Left coins on the table. And walked out. — He did not look back. — But he knew. The man followed. — The street outside was quieter now. Shadows stretched longer under the dim light. — Jin Woo walked at a steady pace. Not fast. Not slow. — The footsteps behind him remained. Keeping distance. — Good. — He turned into a narrow alley. Dark. Empty. — Then stopped. — The footsteps behind him stopped too. — Silence filled the space. — Jin Woo spoke without turning. “Are you going to hide again” — No answer. — A few seconds passed. — Then the man stepped forward. — “You are sharp.” His voice was calm. — Jin Woo turned slowly. His eyes steady. — “You are careless.” — The man gave a faint smile. “Perhaps.” — They stood facing each other. — “Who sent you” Jin Woo asked. — The man tilted his head slightly. “Does it matter” — “Yes.” — A pause. — Then the man said quietly, “You already know the answer.” — Jin Woo’s gaze did not move. — The man continued, “You should leave.” — “Why” — “For your own safety.” — Jin Woo let out a faint breath. Not a sigh. Not tired. — Just calm. — “I did not come back for safety.” — The man’s expression changed slightly. — “This will not end well for you.” — Jin Woo stepped closer. Just one step. — “That depends.” — The air between them grew heavier. — The man looked at him carefully. As if trying to understand something. — Then he spoke again. “Things are not what they seem.” — Jin Woo’s eyes sharpened. — “They never are.” — A long silence followed. — Then the man stepped back. — “Be careful.” — And without another word, he turned and disappeared into the darkness. — Jin Woo stood there alone. — The night felt colder now. — But his expression remained the same. — “Everyone is warning me.” He said quietly. — His gaze lifted toward the sky. — “Too late for that.” — He turned and walked out of the alley. — His steps were steady. Unshaken. — Because the more they tried to stop him The clearer his path became. — And deep inside The storm was getting closer. — Slowly But surely.
