Chapter 32 – The Man Who Returned
The road to the capital was long.
Dust rose under the hooves of Jin Woo’s horse as he rode forward without stopping. The sky above was clear, but his eyes held no reflection of it.
There was no hurry in his movements.
And yet—he did not waste a single moment.
—
By the time the tall gates of the capital came into view, the sun had already begun to set.
The city stood the same as he remembered.
Grand. Powerful. Untouchable.
Crowded streets. Loud voices. Busy lives.
Everything moved forward.
As if nothing had happened.
—
Jin Woo slowed his horse.
His gaze moved across the city slowly.
Carefully.
Like a man observing something from a distance.
Not belonging to it.
Not yet.
—
“I’m back…”
He said quietly.
But there was no warmth in his voice.
—
The guards at the gate stopped him.
“State your name.”
Jin Woo looked at them calmly.
“Jin Woo.”
The name alone was enough.
The guards stiffened slightly.
Recognition flashed in their eyes.
“…You may enter.”
—
As he rode inside, whispers began to follow.
“He returned?”
“Wasn’t he gone for years?”
“Something feels different…”
—
Jin Woo did not look at anyone.
Did not react.
He simply moved forward.
—
The palace stood in the distance.
Golden walls glowing under the fading light.
A place filled with power.
And hidden dangers.
—
Jin Woo’s eyes rested on it for a moment.
Then he looked away.
—
Not yet.
—
Instead, he turned his horse toward another direction.
Toward the residence once assigned to him.
—
The doors opened slowly.
Dust had gathered.
Servants rushed to clean, surprised by his sudden return.
But Jin Woo said nothing.
He walked inside as if he had never left.
—
Everything was the same.
And yet—
Everything felt different.
—
That night, the palace received news.
“He has returned.”
—
In a quiet chamber, someone stood still.
Listening.
—
“…Jin Woo?”
A soft voice spoke.
Calm.
But slightly tense.
—
“So he came back.”
—
A faint smile appeared.
But it did not reach the eyes.
—
“After all this time…”
—
The candle beside her flickered.
—
Back in his residence—
Jin Woo sat alone.
A cup of tea untouched in front of him.
—
His eyes were distant.
Not thinking of the palace.
Not thinking of power.
—
But of something far away.
—
“…You used to say the tea here is too bitter.”
His voice was low.
Barely above a whisper.
—
“I never noticed it before.”
—
His fingers touched the edge of the cup.
Slowly.
—
“…Now I do.”
—
He closed his eyes.
And once again—
The past returned.
—
“Ara, why do you always make that face?”
Jin Woo looked at her as she took a sip of tea.
Ara frowned slightly.
“It’s bitter.”
“That’s how tea is supposed to be.”
Ara shook her head.
“No. It should be warm, not bitter.”
Jin Woo raised an eyebrow.
“Warm and bitter are not the same.”
Ara smiled softly.
“I know. But when you’re with someone you like… even bitter things feel warm.”
—
Jin Woo paused.
Looking at her.
For a moment, he said nothing.
—
Then quietly—
“…Then I suppose I have never tasted bitter tea.”
—
Ara laughed.
And the sound stayed with him.
—
The memory faded.
—
Jin Woo opened his eyes again.
The room returned.
Silent.
Empty.
—
The tea in front of him remained untouched.
—
“…It’s bitter.”
He said.
—
And this time—
There was no warmth.
—
The next morning—
Jin Woo entered the court.
—
The grand hall was filled with officials.
Voices quieted as he stepped in.
—
Eyes turned toward him.
Curious.
Careful.
—
Some greeted him.
Some avoided his gaze.
—
Because the man standing there…
Was not the same as before.
—
He bowed respectfully.
Calm.
Perfect.
—
But his presence carried something else.
Something heavier.
—
A few officials whispered quietly.
“He changed.”
“Yes… something is different.”
—
Jin Woo took his place.
Silent.
Observing.
—
Every movement.
Every face.
Every word.
—
Nothing escaped his notice.
—
Later that day, Minho’s words echoed in his mind.
“This path will not be easy.”
—
Jin Woo’s expression did not change.
—
Because he already knew.
—
Nothing about this would be easy.
—
And he was not looking for easy.
—
As the day ended, a message arrived.
—
A royal summons.
—
Jin Woo looked at it for a long moment.
—
Then folded it calmly.
—
“…So it begins.”
—
The wind outside grew stronger.
Carrying something unseen.
—
Far away—
In a quiet, hidden place—
The air remained cold.
Still.
Unchanging.
—
Waiting.
—
And in the capital—
A game had begun.
—
One that no one fully understood yet.
—
Except one man.
—
And he was no longer the man they once knew.
