The night passed, but it did not bring peace. Ara woke up slowly, her eyes heavy. For a moment, she did not move. She just lay there, staring at the ceiling. Her sleep had been light. Broken. Every small sound had pulled her awake again and again. Even now, her heart did not feel calm. She sat up and looked toward the door. It was still closed. Locked. Just like she had left it. She let out a small breath. “…It’s nothing” she whispered to herself. But the feeling inside her did not fully go away. — She got ready quietly and stepped outside. The morning air was cool. The sky was clear again, as if the rain had never happened. People were already moving around. Everything looked normal. Too normal. Ara walked toward the market, holding her shawl tightly. Her eyes moved around more than usual. Watching. Checking. As if she expected something to appear. — Minho noticed it the moment she arrived. “You didn’t sleep well” he said. Ara nodded. “No.” Minho frowned. “You’re still thinking about that letter.” Ara placed her things down slowly. “Yes.” Minho leaned closer. “Do you really think something is wrong?” Ara paused. Then she said honestly, “I don’t know.” Minho crossed his arms. “That’s not a good answer.” Ara gave a weak smile. “I wish I had a better one.” — They started working. Customers came and went. The usual noise returned. But Ara could not focus fully. She dropped a bowl once. Spilled water another time. Minho sighed. “This is not like you.” Ara rubbed her forehead. “I know” Minho looked at her carefully. “Go rest for a while.” Ara shook her head. “I’m fine” But she wasn’t. — By midday, the market became quieter. Ara sat down, her shoulders slightly slumped. Minho handed her some food. “Eat.” Ara took it but didn’t start immediately. Her eyes were distant. “Minho…” “Yes?” “Do you ever feel like something about to happen… but you don’t know what?” Minho looked at her for a moment. Then he nodded slowly. “Sometimes.” Ara looked at him. “What do you do when you feel that?” Minho shrugged. “I stay careful.” Ara lowered her gaze. “…That’s all?” “What else can you do?” he replied. Ara didn’t answer. Because she knew he was right. — In the afternoon, a few strangers passed through the market. That was not unusual. Travelers often came and went. But today… Ara noticed them more. Three men. Dressed simply. But something about them felt off. They did not buy anything. Did not talk much. Just looked around. Their eyes moved slowly over the stalls. Over the people. And for a brief moment… One of them looked directly at Ara. She felt it clearly. That gaze. Cold. Measuring. Ara quickly looked away. Her hands tightened. “Minho…” He followed her gaze. “You see them too?” Ara nodded slightly. “They’re strange.” Minho frowned. “Stay close.” Ara nodded. “I will.” — The men didn’t stay long. After a few minutes, they left the market. But the feeling they left behind… Stayed. — As the sun began to lower, Ara decided to close early again. “I’m going home,” she said. Minho didn’t argue this time. “I’ll walk you.” Ara hesitated. Then nodded. “Okay.” — They walked side by side through the quiet street. The air felt heavy again. Even though nothing had happened. Minho looked around carefully. “You’re right,” he said. “Something feels strange today.” Ara tightened her shawl. “I told you.” Minho nodded. “I don’t like it.” They walked faster. Neither of them spoke much. Because both of them felt it now. That quiet fear. Growing. — When they reached Ara’s house, she stopped. “Thank you,” she said softly. Minho nodded. “I’ll come tomorrow morning.” Ara gave a small smile. “Okay.” Minho hesitated for a moment. Then he said, “If anything feels wrong… call me.” Ara nodded. “I will.” — After he left, Ara stepped inside and locked the door. She checked the windows. Closed. Secure. Everything looked fine. But still… Her heart would not settle. — The evening passed slowly. Ara tried to distract herself. She cleaned. Cooked. Arranged small things in her house. But every now and then, she would stop. And listen. The silence felt too loud. — Later that night, she sat by the small table. Jin Woo’s letters were placed in front of her. She picked them up and read them again. His words felt warm. Comforting. But also… Worrying. “Come back soon…” she whispered. Her voice was soft. Almost lost in the quiet room. — Outside, the wind began to rise again. The trees moved gently. Shadows shifted along the walls. The night grew deeper. — Ara stood up and walked toward the door. She didn’t know why. But she felt the need to check it again. Her hand reached for the lock. Still secure. She let out a breath. Then— A sound. Very soft. Almost too soft to hear. From outside. Ara froze. Her body became still. Her heart started beating faster. “…Who’s there?” she called out softly. No answer. Only the sound of wind. Ara stepped back slowly. Her eyes fixed on the door. Silence. Long. Heavy silence. — Then suddenly— A faint shadow moved under the door. Just for a second. Then gone. Ara’s breath caught. She stepped back further. Her hands trembled slightly. “…No… maybe I imagined…” But deep inside… She knew she didn’t. — Far away, in the capital… Jin Woo stood in a large hall. His expression was cold. Serious. In front of him, several officials were speaking. “…the orders are clear…” “…it must be done without leaving any trace…” Jin Woo’s eyes darkened slightly. “What order?” he asked. The room fell silent. The officials exchanged looks. Then one of them said, “It is not something you need to know yet.” Jin Woo’s gaze sharpened. “I am part of this council. I have the right to know.” Another official stepped forward. “You will know… when the time comes.” Jin Woo did not like that answer. Not at all. A strange unease grew inside him. Stronger than before. — Back in the town… Ara slowly stepped away from the door. Her back hit the wall behind her. Her breathing was uneven. She looked around the room. Everything was the same. But it didn’t feel safe anymore. “…Jin Woo…” She whispered his name softly. As if calling him would make things better. But the room remained silent. — Outside… In the darkness… A figure stood just beyond the light. Still. Watching. Waiting. And this time… It did not leave. Not yet.
