Chapter 34 The Eyes That Watch Morning came quietly. The capital was already awake. Voices filled the streets. Merchants called out. Horses moved along the roads. Life continued as it always had. Jin Woo stood by the window. He had not slept much. His eyes were calm, but his mind had not rested. The message from last night remained clear in his thoughts. You should not have come back. He did not need to guess who sent it. He already knew. But knowing was not enough. He needed more. — He turned away from the window and prepared for the day. His movements were slow and controlled. Nothing rushed. Nothing wasted. — When he stepped into the court again, the atmosphere felt different. More eyes were on him. More whispers followed him. Some were curious. Some were cautious. Some were afraid. — Jin Woo took his place without reacting. His face showed nothing. His presence alone was enough to draw attention. — A senior official approached him. “Lord Jin Woo, it has been a long time.” Jin Woo bowed slightly. “It has.” “You left without much word,” the man continued. “Yes.” The answer was simple. The man studied him for a moment. Then smiled lightly. “Well, it is good that you have returned. The court has changed in many ways.” Jin Woo looked at him calmly. “I am sure it has.” — The man nodded and walked away. But his glance lingered just a little longer than normal. — Jin Woo noticed. He noticed everything. — The session began. Matters of the court were discussed. Land disputes. Taxes. Border concerns. Voices rose and fell. Opinions clashed. — Jin Woo listened. He spoke only when necessary. And when he did, his words were precise. Clear. Difficult to argue against. — Some officials exchanged looks. They remembered this. This calm control. This sharp thinking. — But there was something new now. Something colder. — After the session ended, people slowly left. But a few stayed behind. Watching. — Jin Woo walked out into the corridor. His steps steady. — As he turned a corner, he paused. Just for a second. — Then continued walking. — A faint presence followed him. Not close. But not far either. — He did not turn. Did not acknowledge it. — Instead, he walked toward the outer courtyard. A place with fewer people. More space. — The air was cooler there. The sound of the city faded slightly. — Jin Woo stopped. — “Are you going to keep following me?” His voice was calm. Low. — Silence. — Then footsteps. Soft. Measured. — A man stepped out from behind a pillar. Dressed as a palace guard. But his posture was too relaxed. Too confident. — Jin Woo looked at him. Without surprise. — “You are not very careful,” Jin Woo said. — The man smiled slightly. “I did not think I needed to be.” — Jin Woo’s eyes remained steady. “You followed me from the hall.” — “Yes.” The man did not deny it. — “Why?” — The man took a few steps closer. Not threatening. But not respectful either. — “Because someone wanted to know if you were the same man as before.” — Jin Woo’s expression did not change. “And?” — The man studied him carefully. Then said, “You are not.” — A short silence followed. — Jin Woo nodded slightly. “That is correct.” — The man’s smile faded. “Then you should be careful.” — “Careful of what?” — “Of where you stand now.” — Jin Woo looked at him for a long moment. Then asked quietly, “Who sent you?” — The man did not answer. Instead, he said, “You already know.” — Jin Woo’s eyes hardened just a little. — “Yes.” — The air between them grew tense. — The man stepped back. “As long as you understand that, we will not have problems.” — Jin Woo said nothing. — The man turned to leave. Then paused. — “One more thing.” He looked back. “Some things are better left in the past.” — Jin Woo’s voice came immediately. Cold. Steady. — “Not this one.” — The man held his gaze for a moment. Then walked away. — Jin Woo stood there alone again. — The courtyard felt quieter now. — But inside him, something had shifted. — Not anger. Not yet. — Something sharper. — He turned his gaze toward the palace. — “They are testing me.” He said softly. — His hand rested behind his back. Fingers still. — “Good.” — Because he had already begun. — That evening, he received another report. Quietly. Through indirect means. — Movements within the palace. Changes in assignments. Names of people who had suddenly taken interest in him. — Jin Woo read everything. Carefully. — Then placed the paper down. — “Too obvious.” — A faint expression appeared in his eyes. Not quite a smile. — “They are watching me.” — He looked toward the darkening sky. — “Then I will let them watch.” — The candle flickered beside him. — His shadow moved along the wall. — Long. Still. — And in that stillness, something unseen continued to grow. — Because this was no longer just a return. — It was the beginning of something much deeper. — And no one in the palace understood yet. — That they were already part of it.
