THE NORTHERN SYMBOL

Chapter Thirty-Four Morning arrived gently over Ar’Zul. For the first time in many months, no war drums echoed through the jungle. Instead… Birds sang. The distant roar of waterfalls drifted across the cliffs. The warm morning breeze carried the scent of rain-soaked leaves and wild flowers through the Panther Clan’s capital. Golden sunlight slowly climbed above the endless mystical ocean, painting the cliffs with shades of orange and gold. Inside Kaela’s home… The fire from the previous night’s feast had burned down to glowing embers. The roasted boar had long since been shared among friends, warriors, elders, and children before Gorak and Kaela had remained talking late into the night. At some point… Neither of them had noticed how tired they had become. ⸻ Gorak slowly opened his eyes. The massive Gorilla leader blinked several times before sitting upright. “…Hmmm…” He rubbed the back of his neck with his remaining hand. His fur was slightly ruffled from sleeping against the carved wooden wall beside the dying fire. For a long moment… He simply looked around. “…I fell asleep.” A faint smile crossed his face. “I don’t even remember when.” He stood carefully. The room was quiet. Very quiet. He looked toward the doorway. “Kaela?” No answer. He chuckled to himself. “Already training.” That sounded exactly like her. She had never missed a sunrise. ⸻ Gorak stepped outside. The Panther capital was already alive. Children chased one another through the stone streets. Merchants opened their stalls. Smiths were already hammering steel. CLANG! CLANG! High above, Panther warriors practiced climbing the cliff faces. Others trained with spears and curved blades. No one looked frightened anymore. No one expected war around every corner. The city felt… Alive. Peaceful. Gorak quietly watched everything for several moments. “This is what all those battles should have protected…” He looked toward the eastern jungle where his own people lived. “…Not destroyed.” ⸻ Before leaving, he searched for something to write with. One of the Panther children happily handed him a piece of charcoal. “Here, Leader Gorak!” He smiled. “Thank you.” Using a flat piece of bark, Gorak slowly wrote in large rough letters. ⸻ Kaela, I did not wish to wake you. I assumed you were already training. I am going to question Zahren again. Perhaps today he has found something useful. Save some breakfast for me. — Gorak ⸻ He looked at the message. “…Good enough.” He placed it carefully upon Kaela’s table beneath a smooth river stone so the wind would not carry it away. Then he began the journey toward Korrakai Crossing. ⸻ The jungle welcomed him. Morning mist drifted between enormous trees. Sunlight pierced through the canopy in long golden beams. Everywhere he looked… Panther and Gorilla patrols now traveled together. A Panther scout nodded respectfully. “Leader.” Gorak nodded back. A Gorilla warrior walking beside the scout smiled. “Morning, Chief.” “Morning.” Simple. Natural. Only months earlier… That meeting would have ended in blood. Now it ended with smiles. ⸻ Hours later… Korrakai Crossing appeared through the trees. The once temporary merchant settlement had become a thriving city. Stone roads crossed through marketplaces. Wooden homes lined the streets. Children from both clans laughed together. Panther musicians played beside Gorilla drummers. BOOM… BOOM… BOOM… Merchants called to customers. Fresh fruit. Armor. Medicine. Jewelry. Weapons. Life had returned to Ar’Zul. ⸻ Near the center of the city stood the heavily guarded building that now housed Zahren. Nearly twenty elite warriors surrounded it. Half belonged to the Gorilla Clan. Half belonged to the Panther Clan. No one entered without permission. No one left without permission. Doran stood outside speaking with several guards. He smiled upon seeing Gorak. “I had a feeling you’d be here.” Gorak returned the smile. “Has he caused trouble?” Doran laughed. “No.” “He barely sleeps.” “He barely eats.” “He just studies.” Gorak crossed his arms. “Anything unusual?” Doran nodded toward the building. “He’s been writing all night.” ⸻ Inside… Zahren sat surrounded by parchment. The room had transformed into something resembling an ancient scholar’s library. Maps covered nearly every wall. Hundreds of copied symbols had been organized into neat rows. Pieces of charcoal. Bone measuring sticks. Ancient Snake scrolls. Small carved stones marked with symbols. The ancient text rested open before him. He hadn’t even noticed Gorak enter. His attention remained fixed upon the strange markings. “No…” He whispered. “…that cannot be right.” He quickly copied another symbol. Then another. Then another. Gorak quietly watched. “So.” “No sleep again?” Zahren didn’t look up. “Sleep wastes time.” Gorak grunted. “So does dying from exhaustion.” Still no response. Instead… Zahren suddenly froze. His eyes widened. “…Wait…” He quickly grabbed another parchment. He placed two copied symbols beside one another. Then three. Then four. His breathing became faster. “No…” He whispered. “I’ve been reading this incorrectly.” ⸻ Gorak stepped closer. “What is it?” Zahren slowly looked up. For the first time in weeks… Excitement replaced exhaustion. “They aren’t simply symbols.” “They’re directions.” Gorak frowned. “Directions?” Zahren nodded rapidly. “I kept trying to translate them as words.” “But they don’t form sentences.” “They form locations.” He pointed toward the copied symbols. “This represents the ocean.” He moved his finger. “This is the Hollow.” Another symbol. “The Merchant City.” Another. “The Gorilla canopy.” Another. “The Panther cliffs.” Gorak leaned closer. “And this?” Zahren’s finger stopped upon a strange spiral carved into the ancient parchment. “This…” “I couldn’t understand.” “Until now.” ⸻ Zahren reached for a large map of Ar’Zul. He carefully placed each copied symbol over matching locations. Slowly… A pattern appeared. One final symbol remained. He placed it far beyond every known landmark. North. Deep north. Past every hunting trail. Past every village. Past every sacred temple. Far beyond the territory anyone claimed. Only endless jungle remained there. Dense… Untouched… Wild. Zahren slowly looked toward Gorak. “There.” Gorak stared at the map. “There are no settlements there.” “No clans.” “No roads.” “No reason for anyone to travel that far.” Zahren nodded. “Exactly.” He gently touched the final symbol. “The ancient text keeps pointing there.” ⸻ Gorak folded his arms. “What do you believe we’ll find?” Zahren looked back at the ancient scroll. “I don’t know.” “But whatever it is…” “…the people who wrote this believed it mattered.” His eyes narrowed thoughtfully. “I don’t think the Tide Stone was ever meant to belong to one clan.” He looked at Gorak. “I think the answers were hidden.” “Deliberately.” ⸻ Far away… Back in the Panther capital… Kaela returned from her morning training. Sweat glistened across her forehead. Her breathing remained calm despite hours of exercise. Several young Panther warriors bowed respectfully as she passed. “Leader.” She smiled. “Good work this morning.” They beamed with pride. She entered her home. The fire had nearly gone out. The room was quiet. “Gorak?” No answer. She looked around before noticing the piece of bark resting beneath the small river stone. She picked it up. Slowly… She began reading. A smile spread across her face. Kaela, I did not wish to wake you. I assumed you were already training. I am going to question Zahren again. Perhaps today he has found something useful. Save some breakfast for me. — Gorak She laughed softly. “He assumes correctly.” She carefully folded the note instead of throwing it away. For reasons she couldn’t explain… She wanted to keep it. She placed it inside a small carved wooden box beside several treasured keepsakes from throughout her life. After a quiet moment, she looked north through her doorway. Beyond the cliffs… Beyond the endless jungle… Clouds drifted over lands no one had explored in generations. Something waited there. She could feel it. Whatever secrets the ancient text still held… The next step in their journey would lead them into the forgotten northern wilderness of Ar’Zul.
