"You ready?" Matteo's voice carried into my room, startling me from my thoughts as I tied the last strand of hair into place. I nodded, catching his glance in the mirror. His lips barely twitched into a smirk, something brief and unreadable. "Good," he said simply, turning to leave without waiting for a second confirmation, a silent expectation for me to follow. I grabbed my jacket, feeling that familiar weight settle on my chest. What now? I wondered, anxiety simmering beneath my skin like it always did when my brothers got involved in my life. As we moved into the hallway, Alessandro's eyes found mine, sharp and unreadable. He didn't say a word, but his silence was telling enough. So, everyone's in on this? I thought bitterly. Great.
