Don't Judge a Book

Dinah looked on as the young boy dealt with the thugs and felt a strange sense of achievement.

'I beat him in a game and here he is fighting for me', but she didn't let it show on her face having perfected 'poker face' to it's max level.

Bam! Thud!

That was him throwing down the last of the thugs to the ground, they had all fainted after being taught a lesson.

"Hey, you! Call emergency services. They might need some medical attention", the young boy with his pearly whites peeking through told her.

She rummaged through her backpack and found her phone, after dialing it she proceeded to call the police. One can't be too sure of how many crimes this group has committed. She walked up to the unconscious boy from before and found he was still breathing though it was a bit difficult and she was sure she made the right call.

"Thank you", she said to her savior which she would never admit out loud.

"Yeah that's okay. These kind of scum need to be treated harshly or no lesson would be learnt"

"But how did you manage to get entangled with them?"

"I zoned out for a bit while walking and ended up intruding on them beating up this student"

"Ahhh! Chivalry ehhh. You would have been floored though, what with your skinny arms and no muscle whatsoever"

"..."

"But I am here. No need to feel afraid, besides we go to the same school", he grinned somewhat foolishly.

She looked at his casual attire and wondered.

"Ahh don't mind this. I left school way earlier than normal and came to the internet cafe just down the road", he explained.

She felt he was bad news. He skipped school hours and knew how to fight like one who was always involved in fights. She was becoming really wary of this 'savior'.

The ambulance and probably the police had arrived. Soon, statements were taken and the thugs with their victim was taken to the hospital. In the midst of all these, Dinah looked back at the mouth of the alley because she had a feeling she was been watched. Truly, she was been watched and by her step sister no less. They locked eyes for a minute and she wondered how long she had been there.

"Hey Miss Dinah, could you come with us to the police station?"

She looked away and concentrated on the young man in uniform

"Why? You already took my statement?"

"Just proper documentation that's all"

"Hey leave her alone. She doesn't know anything more than what she told you", her savior said

"Urrgg, Young..ummm.....Sir.....I", the officer was skipping words seriously.

She raised a delicate brow at that

"No, leave it", he insisted and surprisingly she was left alone not long after.

However before she could say anything more, she heard or everyone heard a loud roar at the other end of the alley since it wasn't a dead end.

"Cha Yun ahhhh!!"

Her savior turned in horror and they both saw a very unkempt looking old man with a horrifying face stalking towards them. Her savior who she knew now was asian (he didn't look it, probably mixed up) didn't even give her a second glance, he ran away at neck breaking speed

"Stop there you brat, I will kill you today"

"Old man, I thought you were having a good time at the bar?", Cha Yun guffawed and kept on running.

"Hey, little girl see ya at school next week", and with that he zoomed off.

'Litrle girl? How old was he?', she frowned at that.

The old man picked up speed too, but he slowed down when he got to where she was and looked at her with narrowed eyes.

She gulped. It was as if a very feral beast was looking at her and her heart rate sped up exponentially. It didn't last long however and soon the old man was out of sight. She looked around and seeing she wasn't needed here anymore, continued her journey back home.

She wondered about what had happened earlier, her step sister been at that alley was very suspicious. Serena never trekked home, she had a designated driver who was at her beck and call, which means she was there with her driver for something else. She would look around the area on Monday. For now, she concentrated on getting home before she walked into another unknown alley.

She pushed open the 'i***t door' and met with an unexpected scene. Serena was crying buckets and her Papa's face was murderous, her step mother as usual was consoling him.

She didn't even bother to ask and continued upstairs but things were bound to never go her way.

"Dinah, how can you walk away like that?", her stepmother said.

"..."

"Papa, don't be angry with Sister, she must have had her reasons", Serena sobbed on

She felt a cold sensation down her back and had a very strange premonition about the cause of this ruckus.

"Get down here and kneel before me!!", Papa literally growled at her and she jolted. She walked right up to him but didn't kneel instead she calmly asked him.

"What did I do?"

"How dare you question your Papa like that?"

"Serena, tell us what you saw darling, don't be scared okay?", her stepmother kept droning.

Serena looked her straight in the eye and she swore she could see a smile there.

"I saw Sister in an alleyway with some boys. There were talking and laughing and then another boy walked up to them and a fight erupted. She stood at a corner and held hands with another boy while the newcomer was beaten up"

"...", Dinah had no words

"And then what darling? Tell us okay", her stepmother encouraged

"One of the boys fell unconscious and from what I could hear they were fighting over her and she didn't even say a word. But when the boy fell, she called emergency services and then ran away"

"I came straight home and had to tell you. I am sorry Sister, but I can't watch you go astray, Papa has been trying his best for both of us you know", Serena said very sadly

She stood straight and looked at her Papa, she wondered if he would at least ask her what had happened and waited for it.

"You have no words now do you? Serena was speaking the truth then. Get me the family law!", her Papa said while looking at her like she was an enemy

She gasped. She didn't dare to believe her very own Papa would do this to her.

"You didn't let me defend myself, Papa"

"There is no need. Serena had never told a lie before and she won't lie against her sister whom she loves so much despite your hatred for her", stepmother said

Dinah couldn't believe her ears or her eyes either. She closed her eyes and at that moment she added another item to the list of things she made sure to keep with her at all times.

'Power, is the only way out'.

She knelt down and kept her eyes closed but she reasoned it wouldn't be okay for her to do that. She heard movement and opened her eyes. Her Papa stood before her with the family law, an entwined vine that had barbs all over it. It was made of durable and well preserved wood, black and shiny. She looked into his eyes dead on and opened her palm. She made not a single sound when the cane met her palm many times. She just kept on looking at her Papa.
