Chapter 3: Devlin

1090 Words
So here I am, standing behind a tree, watching the Lion family celebrate Lavinia's birthday. I'm waiting to see if she will shift for the first time. I'm hoping that I'm wrong, and she's not the last dragon in the hopes that she will finally be safe from the alpha. The alpha, Brock Garisom, will probably be pissed if he also believes that she's the last dragon, though I'm not sure how he came to the same conclusion as I have. The only thing that I can come up with is that he went through my room and found the journal, copied it and put it back to look at later. Liv (as she has everyone except me call her, which I hope to change soon) seems to be enjoying her day with her family. Goddess, I hope I'm correct and wrong. Correct, because I'm in love with her, but to be honest, who wouldn't be? She's smart, funny, creative, helpful, caring, strong and strong-willed. She's tall at 5"7' (only 2 feet shorter than me), has light brown waist-length hair, honey-brown eyes, heartshaped face and curves in all the right places. I may be a jerk to her, but it's only to protect her from Brock. I stopped calling dad or father after seeing him leering at her in a s****l manner when she was 16. That was just a week after I learned not to mess with her family or her possessions. Which is another reason I believe she is a dragon, because, according to the journal, dragons are very protective, possessive and territorial. Never, and I mean, NEVER, mess with a dragon's family and possessions. I had my ass handed to me five different ways from Sunday and had a limp for a week. Not a good look for an alpha heir, but I didn't care. It just showed me that she would be protective of her children. I hope I am wrong, and she's not a dragon because, hopefully, that will save her from Brock, but I think that he might still try to force a mating and marking on her due to her strength. He might believe that if he could produce an heir with her that they would be stronger and unbeatable (which they probably would be to be honest). So, it looks like, either way, if I'm correct, and she's a dragon, or I'm wrong, and she's not a dragon, she will still need my protection. I guess on the plus side, if she is my mate, once we mark and mate each other, Brock can't do anything unless he kills me, but even then I don't know if she will follow right after me or get revenge, then follow me. I know for wolves, if they lose their mate then they follow due to a broken heart shortly after. Wolves mate for life. Sometimes, in very special cases, a wolf will get a second chance. I don't know if it's the same for dragons. I hear a gasp that brings me back to reality. As I look at the family again, I see Liv start to shift. At least that's what I think is happening. I hear a gasp that brings me back to reality. As I look at the family again, I see Liv start to shift. At least that's what I think is happening. I saw gold dust swirling around Liv. This isn't what happens in a normal first shift. Normally, the person is screaming in pain. I remember the pain of my first shift, and it lasted an hour or more. Then you run or fly to bond with your animal. With Liv, it seems to be completely different. I feel the urge to be at her side for her first shift. I have never felt this way before and I have watched many first shifts. My wolf, Colt, is jumping, yipping and barking in my head to get closer to Liv. Liv's first shift is over in a total of 10 minutes and then, standing before us is a beautiful silver dragon with red highlights on her belly scales, the frons around her jaw are red along with her horns. She's absolutely beautiful. I go to step out of the trees just as a breeze comes through from behind me. Taking my scent right to Liv. I guess this is as good a time as any to find out if we are mates. It seems like she may be talking with her dragon for a minute, and then I see her head whip around me just as the breeze comes back through towards me. I smell the most amazing scent I have ever smelled in my life. It smells like the sky after a fresh rain and the first day of fall with the smell of burning leaves. I know instantly that this scent is coming from Liv. Looking right into her eyes, I saw the realization dawn on her that I was her mate. She pauses for a second, then I see her launch into the sky and fly away. I ran after her to try and foolishly catch up with her. How in hell can a wolf possibly catch a dragon when they fly away? It's impossible! I stop running when I'm midway between her family, who are just watching her fly away, and the lake. Clearly, they know that they can't possibly catch up to her. Once I'm close to her family, I stop walking. I wait for them to turn around and just start questioning me about why i am here. Taking a deep breath, I get ready to get this over with and get ready to have my ass handed to me. Again. A pack of wolves can win against one lion in a fight, but I'm one wolf against four lions, and all of them have seen how I've treated Liv in the past without knowing the reasons why. All I can hope is that they have at least seen or noticed Brock's demeanor around Liv before. I only treated her that way in hopes of getting her to leave for her own protection. Both Daniel and Rose are the top warriors in our pack and their kids, Kate and Nate, aren't far behind them. Definitely not a family to piss off. Once they turned around, I'm immediately punched in the face by Kate and then Nate. Okay, I deserved that for how I treated Liv. This will be a fun family chat.
