Chapter 5:Devlin

"What is the lion shifter way? What do I have to do to prove to you that I love her and want her as my mate?" I asked him. “We fight. Not to the death but to show strength and determination to be with your mate. To show, even with the treatment you have given her, that you regret what you did to her,” he tells me. “Okay. Who do you want me to fight so I can prove myself?” I asked. “Since you seem so eager to get started, do you want to know all the rules before we get started? Or just start fighting?” he asked me right back. I guess I should know all the rules and how the lion shifter way works. I want to be with my mate. I don’t care that we are different shifters or that our pups could have traits of both a dragon and a wolf. I also know that this is just to show my intentions to her family. I have a lot of groveling to do with Liv and I don’t care how long it takes. I don’t want anyone else. "Tell me all the rules. I want to know how this works for lions. I don't know how it works for dragons. I know I have to learn about my mate. I want her to know that I do want her," I tell him. "Rule #1: No killing. Rule #2: You fight the whole Pride. Rule #3: The fighting starts with the youngest sibling of the mate you want to impress. Rule #4: Fight ends with either Knock out or first blood drawn. Rule #5: If you are the one that gets first blood drawn from yourself or gets knocked out the father has the right to reject you on behalf of his daughter (or son),” he states the rules like this is nothing for him. Just another day. While I’m processing the rules, I’m also trying to figure out who is the youngest out of the twins, already knowing that they both are evenly matched in strength. I’m also hoping that I even stand a chance against Rose. If I can’t get past Rose, I may never get to be with Liv. I will still protect her from Brock. He can’t have her. Who knows what he would do to her once he forced a mate bond with her. “Question: are we allowed to shift or is this all with our human strength?” I ask him. Daniel looks to Rose to see what she wants to do. Rose is the one to answer that we will fight with only our human strength. Probably because lions in general are stronger than wolves and I still have to find out from Lavinia how dragons show their intentions to their mates. "I'll be honest with Devlin, we don't know much about how dragons show their intentions to their mates and how they deem them worthy. But I'll have Rose call Liv back to watch the fights. So you can show her that you are proving to her Den that you do want her as your mate." Daniel looks right at me as he says this. I watch as Rose mind-links with Liv to have her fly back. I can't wait to see her up close. She was beautiful from a distance. As we are waiting for Liv to fly back, I learn that her dragon's name is Diamond. I think it suits her perfectly. Her scales are bright like a diamond and the red just brings a sharpness to her looks. Kind of in a “don’t mess with me or you will learn just how sharp me talons are” way. We are just standing around waiting for Liv, when I see Wade running toward with a panicked look on his face. He knew I was out here and knew the reason why. This can’t be good if he is looking at me like something just scared the s**t out of him. “Dude, did you see the dragon that just flew over the pack? I thought dragons were extinct. That the hunters killed them all off 100 years ago. Where was this one hiding? Do we need to prepare the warriors?” he doesn’t stop talking long enough for me to get a word in. At least, until Daniel punches him in the stomach. I quickly tell him to shut up before anyone else hears him. I’m not sure if anyone else followed him out to the lake and the last thing I need is for Brock to know where Liv is going to land. I look to the skies to see if I can see Liv anywhere but I can't find her. I turn back to Wade and start to explain that the dragon is Liv and that we have to protect her. He already knew that I love her. That I was going to protect her anyway and that I was hoping she was my mate. “Wade, just shut up for 2 minutes so we can explain what is going on. Yes, I saw the dragon. I actually saw her take off and I'm the reason for that. The dragon is Liv. I’m sorry that I never told you that I suspected her to be a dragon. But you have to understand why I didn’t. I’m the only one that the alpha command doesn’t work on. I don't know why that is but ever since Liv came to the pack Brock hasn't been able to alpha command me to do anything.” I told him. Just then, I hear the flap of wings and feel the ground shake under my feet. I turn to look and there is Liv, well, Diamond. Damn, she doesn’t look happy to see me. I can’t blame her but I’m not leaving without her. She is mine. Colt sits up and puffs his chest out in my mind. Shaking my head at him, knowing that I have a lot of work to do in the way of getting my mate to accept me, I start walking towards her. “Hey Diamond, you are beautiful, baby girl. I know I have a lot of explaining to do and a lot of groveling. I want you to know that I do want you as a mate. I only treated you that way to protect you. I know it’s messed up and was the wrong way to go about protecting you, but Brock wants to force a mate bond on you with himself. I can’t and won’t let that happen. Rather you accept me as your fated mate or not, I’ll always protect you from him,” I look up at her while I tell her all of this. She’s looking down at me and I can’t tell if she believes me or not. All of a sudden, I hear her voice in my head. “Why should I believe a word that you say? You have treated me like I am nothing more than gum beneath your shoe. You have already received one gift from me before even knowing what or who I am to you. What makes me think that you are worthy to be my mate?” I’m not sure if this is Liv or Diamond or both talking to me. I turn when I hear Rose talking to Liv out loud, it seems like Liv might be new to mind-linking. “Liv, honey, you're using your Den mind-link. Apparently Diamond has already accepted him into your Den. This must have happened before he started treating you badly. Why don’t you shift back so you can talk to him and stop scaring the soon-to-be Beta. Poor Wade looks like he’s about to pass out.” Rose tells her daughter. We watch as Liv shifts back, and I have to say that I am kind of jealous of my mate. She shifts back completely dressed but somehow now has a crown on top of her head? Where did that come from? She didn’t have that before she shifted. “Yo, sis, where did the crown come from?” I hear Nate ask. I can’t seem to take my eyes off Liv. She was beautiful before her shift but now it's like she has this ethereal glow surrounding her. Goddess, no one better touch her other than me. No male can have her. Colt starts growling at the idea of another male touching what is ours. I start to feel my chest rumbling. This is new. I've never done that before. Not with any of the girlfriends I've had.
