DAY SEVEN Keith ’ s up first again next morning (no surprise). At first he doesn ’ t move. He just lies there in his makeshift bed, listening intently, because he can hear something. It ’ s something he wasn ’ t expecting. There are footsteps outside the bungalow, but they ’ re not the clumsy, barely coordinated footsteps of the dead. There ’ s someone else out there. Someone else still alive. His eyes are tired and full of sleep. He blinks several times and rubs them, then looks for Anna, trying to move as little as possible in case whoever ’ s out there is looking in. She ’ s still there, lying in her sleeping bag under the window, dead to the world (so to speak). Keith continues to listen. He hears whoever it is try the door ( thank Christ for the padlock and chain ), then sees them
