For a half-second he remains completely still, wondering if inactivity will be enough to fool them into thinking they were wrong, but it ’ s clear it won ’ t. They ’ re already homing in on him from all directions: twenty-odd random trajectories all converging on him. He looks the other way and sees more of them coming along the alleyway towards him from behind the houses near his, and Keith knows all he can do now is run. And he runs and runs, too afraid to stop. He knows his way around this area well – it ’ s the only place he ’ s ever lived – but good local knowledge doesn ’ t make a whole lot of difference this morning, because the panic and the fear and the persistent heavy rain combine to leave him virtually blind. He ’ s not planning on trying to get to anywhere specific right now
