chapter 4

Purity's POV It's a cool morning. Breezy with a burst of seemingly enraged waves of the Indian ocean. The ocean is rough. It's surface looks like a mangled skin. It looks precariously moody. The few ships in sight are being violently tossed up by the enormous spate of waves. The sight of the boats plunging back to the ocean surface after being sculled to the sky is enthralling in a way. The beach is picking up, its clear, few birds are scurry through. Flocking towards the ocean. I see an exuberant English couple already facetiously hanging out at the Oceanside. My mind is messy and rankled. Thoughts buzzing in a whirl random circle. Bitter thoughts. I didn't even had enough sleep last night. The little nap I had was punctured by nightmares. The quarrel my parents had last nigh night was frightening. It didn't end well. It climaxed by them engaging in a nasty fights. I  am used to them in feuds, but this one was an odd one. I didn't expect to happen. Because we were in a vocation. You Know what happy cool families do in such vacations. They wake up early and plan on activities of the day. They have a sumptuous breakfast together , cracking jokes and laughing hard to those jokes. They pull on their costumes and blast the beach. They embrace the waves. They dance to the tune of the shore. They laugh at a dad who looks terrible in costumes. Or they wave at an hairy man reading a novella at the shade.    They lie naked at the shoreline. And let the surging waves wash away the scars, the flab and the marks on their skin. They let in the breeze, and get more life and energy. Cool families on vacation, embrace their bottled adventurous angels. They open the curtains for the angels to peek into the world. The angels can also pee if they want. This families later have their lunch in a spacious seaside restaurant. Where they can watch the the ocean simmer in it's blue glow. A place where they can watch a beach-boy, strolling down the beach in a bouncy swagger, like the sand underfoot are mini bombs which can explode. But it didn't happen to us like that, my mum looked completely tired the first day we arrived at Diani Beach. She looked bored. Dad on the other side was happy, he was looking for a correct place to unwind his crammed business world. And Diani was a perfect destination. A super fine place for the fun-lovers. Before the last night fight, mum had been accusing dad for breaching their Christian marriage. That dad was cheating on her. Dad on the other side, blamed her for the boring family life. That she didn't light up the family anymore, like a good wife is expected to do. He admonished her reckless drinking.  Mum continued reprimanding him for shagging with other women. " Who is Emily? Tell me now who is she to you? Mum had started.  His voice with tinge of venom, hard enough as if it was on the edge ready to fall and explode. "I don't know her, what are you suggesting?are you.." dad had answered, trying to be calm. "What of Esther? How could you fall for that b***h!" "What! You calling my secretary a b***h? "What do you think she is? A doctor? She is a b***h, okay? A dummy b***h, with a mountain ass and an attitude to go with it" " Stop it now, or I will.." " I can't stop, the list is here with me, what of Emicanella? " " Who is she?" " Don't act like you don't know her, when you are the one who f****d her in the mercury store" "Shssss! Stop being this crazy..." "What did you really saw in that Emicanella? Don't I have the juice she has, does the river between my legs not enough to quench your carnal thirst? I mean why do you have to wandering in the dangerous deserts trying to dig other boreholes when you already have a fountain? Tell me now, why do you do this to me?" " Er..stop this nonesence, I don't want to you to cause a nasty scene." "There's Tasha again, that Swahili model, what's your problem? Ooh God of heaven, come down, don't come alone, come with a ball of fire" " Don't talk of Tasha, next time I hear you talking of her I might break your neck" " Don't be silly, people break world records not necks, I want to see God, where is God?" " You are going crazy, I might have to take you the hospital" "Crazy people are not for hospital medication, they are emotionally sick, and you just let them be.." " We are going to the hospital, right away" " Hospital? I am asking you where is God? Has he gone out for a short walk with the virgin Mary?" " Why are you asking about him?" "I want to tell him he gave me a shitty husband" I can replay their argument in my mind. It builds and inflates a balloon of grief in my heart. I don't know if the women mum purports dad has been shagging is sure. How can she be that certain? But  the name Tasha rings a bell in my mind. It takes me into the past. When we were out in town with Dad, he had dropped me at the National library. Then he proceeded to meet what he called ", business partner". Dad was always open to me. More than she was to mum. I accompanied him to some business meetings in town , he showed me his friends. He shared with me his business plans, his fears and even success. But that day in town, he look a little bit nervous. His face flashed with a spray of worry. Like he was going to hear the fate of his soul in an eternal courtroom. I had wanted to go with him. Because I couldn't imagine burning my ass away in the library for good four hours. Plus it was Friday. And yes you know Friday  has it's madness. " Tasha is a business woman, she runs some factories at the coast, you will meet her one day" he had said and Walked away. So the argument had when on past midnight. Dad flogged her out of anger. The hissing flit of whip twisted my spine in a wave of terror. From the  deep crackling sound as he whipped mum, I suspected it was a whip made of leather. I have never loved my mum, but listening to her being whipped was heartbreaking. I cried , I felt feeble. I couldn't even lift my head. My eyes glued at the ceiling, I cried out my heart. I think the heavy sobs had made my father to stop. It was disgusting, like watching jackals in their wild make out sessions.
