As much as Rune loved being the Alpha King of Blood-Stone, he equally hated it as well. He had been stuck in a meeting with the council for hours and as much as he hated to disrespect people, he couldn't help but admit that he was bored as hell.
The council members talked about the same issues over and over again but just in different words and about ninety percent of the issue was Hera Kline— his prisoner. If he heard one more word about that woman, he could actually lose his mind.
“Your Majesty. The betas are here!” One of the guards announced and Rune let out an exhausted groan as the throne doors opened.
It wasn't enough that he had to deal with the council all day but now he had to deal with those two bickering idiots?
Asha and Knox bowed slightly as they entered the throne room and the doors shut loudly behind them.
“Have you seen the woman?” Rune asked, cutting straight to the chase.
“Yes we have.” Asha replied with an unhappy expression on her face.
“Well, what do you think of her?”
“I think she's telling the truth, Rune,” Knox chipped in. “She probably got bitten by a werewolf and through some miracle, she survived. She’s slowly transitioning from a human into a werewolf.”
Rune was not at all surprised by that. The werewolf scent he perceived on her already told him that much.
“Why do you think so?” He asked and this time, Asha replied.
“She lifted the heaviest couch in the royal chamber all by herself and I believe no ordinary human should not be able to do that.”
“And she got burned by silver.” Knox added and Rune's eyebrows went up. At this point, the woman might be more werewolf than human.
“What else? Has she developed super hearing too?” The Alpha King asked and his betas shook their heads.
“Not yet. Just super healing.” Asha replied.
“What are you going to do about this woman, Rune?” Knox asked and the Alpha King let out an exasperated sigh.
“I truly have no idea. Everything about this woman is a mystery to me and honestly, I do not like it. Until I figure out why she survived the werewolf bite, she is to be kept locked up in the royal chambers. Do you two understand me?”
Knox opened his mouth to object but Rune shook his head. “I said, do you understand me?” Rune asked once again.
“Yes, Alpha.” They chorused in unison.
“You should go see what she can do for yourself.” Asha suggested and he gave her a small nod.
“I will.” He answered.
The two betas bowed before their Alpha King and exited the throne room, the large doors shutting after them.
Rune was sincerely tired of all this. Everything was normal in Blood-Stone. Everything was just fine till that woman had to cross the border and complicate things. Now he was confused and didn't know what to believe.
He didn't know if he should throw her back in the dungeons, execute her or let her go free. He let out a sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration. It was all a huge mess and he didn't know how to get out of it.
After letting out another sigh, he got up from his throne, adjusting his crown before making his way toward the doors. He was going to see for himself what this woman was capable of. The guards opened the doors and he could feel his spirits brighten as he stepped out of the throne room.
Rune loved being a king as much as he loved his people but sometimes, the throne room felt like an anchor, pulling him down under its weight.
Sometimes he just thought of running away from all his responsibilities but at the end of the day, he was not an irresponsible king and he stayed loyal to the throne and the people every single time.
The left wing of the royal chambers was a long walk from the throne room and after replying to as many greetings from the passing maid servants and royal guards as he could, he finally reached his destination.
He got to the room where the weird woman was locked up and he was surprised to see about three guards stationed at the doorway.
He thought he assigned just one of his best guards to stand at the doorway but he was nowhere in sight.
“Where’s Stanley?” Rune asked, still looking around for any sign of his royal guard.
“The prisoner shattered his jaw and your right and left-hand betas asked us to stand guard instead.”
Rune's eyes widened and he wasn't sure he heard them correctly. “What? She did what?”
“She shattered his jaw, Your Majesty.”
Rune’s expression turned incredulous. He couldn't believe this was happening. Stanley was one of his elite guards and she couldn't believe that woman shattered his jaw. Just like that. Why was that weird woman such a menace?
All she did was invade his city and cause chaos. Why? He almost ran his fingers through his hair in frustration but he quickly remembered he was wearing his crown.
The Alpha King's blood thrummed with anger. Sensing his fury, the guards opened the doors instantly, making way for the angry king. His eyes scanned the living room and he huffed as there was no sign of her.
“Where are you?!” He thundered moving toward the first room in sight. “Come out wherever you are, human! How dare you shatter the jaw of a royal guard!”
There was no answer from the woman and he seethed, roughly throwing the doors to the first room open. His eyes instantly landed on her and she had her back turned to him.
“You!” The Alpha King bellowed, seething with rage. “Turn around this instant!”
The prisoner slowly turned around and every insult which was on the tip of Rune's tongue disappeared as his eyes surveyed the person in front of him. Who was she and what had she done with the weird woman?
