Matthias had no need of another horse but decided to attend Tattersall’s large Thursday sale just the same. A good number of gentlemen attended these sales, if not to buy, then to meet and mingle with others in a setting where ladies were not common.
He didn’t know if Esmond would be among the gentlemen present, but it was doubtful. It was surprising enough that Esmond had stayed in Town and still ventured into Society despite his humiliating bankruptcy; most men would have taken themselves off to the Continent or as least stopped attending social functions. Matthias knew it spoke more to Esmond’s desperation than his fortitude, and that Esmond wouldn’t want to find himself in the midst of a male-dominated arena where the absence of ladies meant lax manners.
