Chapter 8 Nick didn’t know whose performance he was more impressed with—Edmund Kean’s or Charlotte’s. Kean was able to command attention, despite being—according to Deverell—in his cups, but Charlotte managed to both act and perform maneuvers that would have impressed Wellington. She was all amiability with Deverell as befitted someone grateful for use of a coveted theater box, and all the while she was able to keep him from holding any meaningful conversation with Violet. Not that Deverell was trying to converse with Violet, but Charlotte either hadn’t noticed or was determined not to risk it. Violet did look very well in her new white gown, which was so light and airy that it gave her an angelic appearance, but that still wasn’t likely to attract Deverell’s attention. Nick didn’t know
