My nostrils opened as wide as possible to inhale the delicious scent of smoked ribs and roasted potatoes that filled the living room. Derren flourished as a chef in his lunch preparation. On one hand, it amazed me that he and Paula were pulling out all the stops for Ken, but on the other hand, I feared that they already held something against him. After all, Ken looked bleak on paper. He got fired from his job because of fraud, was homeless, and almost took his own life. I wanted to confess. But how without risking my own neck? At least I’d convinced my guardians that everybody needed a helping hand to get out of the gutter. Paula and Derren had no other choice but to accept that I would hire him.
