I stared at the surveillance screen, watching them kiss, hug, and have s*x.
The sky darkened. I sat frozen at my desk, the pain having dulled into numbness.
After a long while, I picked up my phone and dialed my best friend Hannah Morris. After graduation, she had given up the comfortable city life to teach in a remote mountainous area.
When the call connected, my voice was hoarse and dry. "Hannah, can I come to you?"
Hannah immediately answered gently, "Of course. I miss you so much."
I softly responded with an "okay", hung up the phone, and finally had a faint sliver of breathing room.
Just then, the office door was pushed open. Ruby breezed in and handed the divorce agreement to me. "It's signed."
I said nothing, put away the documents, got up, and left the law firm.
When I returned home, the house was warm and cozy, the aroma of food filling the air.
Julian saw me enter and hurried over. He reached for my hand, his voice so gentle it dripped with tenderness, "Hurry up and wash your hands for dinner. I made your favorite dishes."
His eyes were gentle, his smile faint, his gaze full of doting and care. As if he had never betrayed me.
I looked at him quietly, my heart full of confusion, torn in two. No matter how busy he was, he could always find time to cook three meals a day for me, as if my eating well was the most important thing in the world. To outsiders, he was an impeccable husband, a faithful, deeply loving man. But why could he split his tenderness between two people? How could he pamper me in every possible way while cheating on me behind my back for years?
After the meal, Julian took out an exquisite black gift box from behind him. He gently placed it before me, his eyes full of tender smiles. "A gift for you. Do you like it?"
I slowly opened the box. Inside lay an exquisitely designed diamond necklace of brilliant clarity. It sparkled radiantly, worth seven figures.
Looking at this necklace, memories of the past suddenly flooded my mind. A bitter ache and sharp pain swept through me once more. I remembered our poorest, most difficult years. Even when he himself wore threadbare clothes and lived frugally, Julian would still save every spare penny to buy me pretty dresses.
Later, his business took off and his net worth soared. But he remained frugal, never wasting a single penny on himself. Yet when it came to me, he spared no expense. He constantly bought me all kinds of jewelry and precious gifts. Even if many of them were flashy and impractical, he never tired of it.
Four years ago, we bought this villa. We renovated it ourselves, furnishing it bit by bit, from furniture placement to soft furnishings to plant selection. Every single detail was crafted by the two of us together. This place held all the hopes we had after enduring hardships. It was the peaceful haven we had chosen for our future. Yet he had brought another woman here to make love.
I clutched the cold necklace, my chest hurting so much I couldn't breathe.
Julian hugged me from behind, his chin resting on the top of my head. His warm breath was intimate against my hair as he sought to draw me closer.
My body went stiff, and I instinctively pushed him away. "Don't touch me. I'm not feeling well."
His embrace met empty air, and panic flashed across his face. "What is it? Have you been too tired lately? I'll schedule a full check-up for you right away. We'll go first thing tomorrow morning."
I didn't respond. I silently turned around and went back to the bedroom. Wasn't this all his doing?
Julian didn't seem to mind my coldness. After getting into bed, he held me tightly from behind.
The next morning, after Julian got up, he quietly walked to the bedside, leaned down, and placed a gentle kiss on my forehead. "There's an urgent matter at the company. Rest well this morning. I'll come back and take you for your check-up when I'm done." He whispered softly, then gently turned around, shut the door behind him, and left.
The room fell into complete silence. Actually, I had been awake all along.
After making sure he was gone, I slowly got up. I only packed a few changes of clothes and my documents, and put the two cats into their carrier. I placed the signed divorce papers and my wedding ring neatly on the coffee table in the living room.
When everything was done, I walked out without a backward glance.
