Whispers from the Trees

1130 Words
Alexander’s POV The afternoon stretched longer than I’d dared hope. The kids didn’t tire; if anything, the land seemed to feed them energy. Sofia led charges across the lawn, Lucia shrieking with delight every time she was caught and spun in dizzy circles. Diego toddled after them, arms wide like he was trying to hug the entire horizon. Mateo drifted between groups—observing, joining briefly, then retreating to press his palms against tree trunks or stare up at the canopy as though reading messages written in the leaves. Bella played with them like she hadn’t in months—rolling in the grass, scooping Lucia up and spinning her until both collapsed in breathless laughter, tackling Sofia in mock wrestling matches that ended with tickles and squeals. Her laughter rang clear and unguarded, her body moving with a natural grace that made my chest ache. Every time she bent to pick up Diego or twirled with Lucia, the sunlight caught the curve of her hips, the swell of her breasts beneath the sweater, the way her dark hair swung free. Pride swelled in me—fierce, primal. My mate. My pups. Playing on our land. Safe. Happy. Mine. I stood at the edge of the driveway, arms crossed, trying to look casual. Failing. Marcus appeared beside me sometime after the first half-hour—silent footsteps, as always. He leaned against the garage doorframe, watching the same scene. “You’re staring,” he said quietly. “Can’t help it.” He snorted. “Yeah, I can see that. And smell it.” His voice dropped lower, teasing but edged with warning. “Alpha, calm down. Your need is thick in the air. If the kids weren’t so distracted, they’d pick it up too. Hell, the trees are probably blushing.” I shot him a look—half glare, half helpless acknowledgment. “She’s happy here. They all are. Look at them.” “I see it.” Marcus’s tone softened. “Mateo’s not even calculating angles anymore. He’s just… existing. And Bella—she’s breathing like she hasn’t in years. Whatever’s in her blood, this land is waking it up. Calling it home.” I nodded, throat tight. “They belong here. With me.” Before Marcus could reply, Lucia’s voice carried across the grass—high, excited. “Mama! Can we get a house close to here? Like really close? I wanna play here every day!” Bella laughed—warm, surprised—still on her knees in the grass with Diego in her lap. “Mija, how much money do you think I make as a nurse?” Lucia scrunched her nose, thinking hard. “But you’re going back to work full-time now! So… much more!” Bella’s smile faltered for half a second—only half—before she recovered, ruffling Lucia’s hair. “Even full-time, baby, houses don’t grow on trees. Especially not ones near fancy estates like this.” Mateo stepped forward then. He’d been standing a few feet away, one hand still on the bark of a nearby pine. His voice was calm, matter-of-fact, the same tone he’d used when he called Carlos a coward. “You don’t need to look for a house, Mama.” Bella turned to him, brow furrowing. “What do you mean, mijo?” Mateo pointed—straight at the pack house. The sprawling stone-and-timber building, the wide windows catching the late-afternoon light, the forest rising protectively behind it like a living wall. “There’s that one.” Sofia and Lucia went quiet. Diego just stared up at his brother. Bella blinked. “Mateo…” “We belong here,” he continued, unflinching. “To these lands. To him.” He didn’t point this time—just nodded once toward me. “He’s already claimed us.” The world narrowed to the space between us. Bella rose slowly, grass clinging to her jeans, expression caught somewhere between confusion and something deeper—recognition, maybe. Her eyes flicked to me, then back to Mateo. “What are you talking about, baby?” Her voice was soft, careful. “Claimed us?” Mateo tilted his head, as if the answer were obvious. “The spirit of the forest told me.” He said it like it was the most natural thing in the world. No drama. No hesitation. Just fact. Bella’s breath caught. She looked around—at the trees, the lawn, the house—as though seeing it for the first time. Her hand drifted to her chest, right over her heart. I could almost see the pieces shifting inside her: the strange calmness she’d felt earlier, the alive quality of the air, the way the kids had run wild without fear, the pull she’d confessed to feeling around me since the first Sunday at church. “Spirit of the forest?” she repeated, half-laugh, half-whisper. But there was no mockery in it—only wonder edged with uncertainty. Mateo nodded once. “It likes us. It knows us. It said we’re supposed to stay.” Sofia stepped closer to her mother, slipping her hand into Bella’s. “I feel it too, Mama. Like… home. But bigger.” Lucia bounced on her toes. “And the bunnies are nicer here!” Diego just hugged Bella’s leg tighter, looking up at her with wide, trusting eyes. Bella’s gaze lifted to mine again—longer this time. Searching. Vulnerable. A thousand questions in her dark eyes, and beneath them, the faintest spark of something awakening. I didn’t move. Didn’t speak. Just held her stare, letting her see the truth I couldn’t voice yet: Yes. They’re right. You belong here. With me. With us. Marcus shifted beside me, voice barely audible. “Kid’s got the sight. Or the blood’s talking louder than we thought.” Bella swallowed. Looked down at her children—her fierce, instinctive little guardians—then back at the house. At me. She took a slow breath—the same deep inhale she’d done earlier, drawing the land’s scent into her lungs. “We should probably head back soon,” she said finally. But her voice lacked conviction. “Marisol will wonder.” The kids groaned in unison. “Just a little longer?” Sofia asked. Bella hesitated—then smiled, small but real. “Okay. A little longer.” She turned back to the grass, calling the kids to her for one more round of tag. But as she ran after Lucia, ponytail flying, laughter spilling free, I caught the way her eyes kept drifting—to the trees, to the house, to me. The spirit of the forest wasn’t the only one whispering. Her blood was answering. And soon—very soon—she would hear it too.
