Consequences Of Been Seen

The rain outside the Blackwood estate fell hard, relentless, like it was trying to wash something away. Elana stood just inside the grand exit, her fingers clenched around the thin fabric of her dress. The two men near the doors hadn’t moved. They didn’t speak. They didn’t smile. They simply watched. She swallowed. Don’t panic. Don’t run. Running made prey interesting. She turned slightly, scanning the ballroom for Adrian—but he was surrounded. Executives. Investors. Cameras. Sarah’s hand rested possessively on his arm, her nails pressing into his sleeve like a claim carved in flesh. Elana understood then. Tonight hadn’t been a mistake. It had been a message. “Miss Hayes.” She stiffened. One of the men spoke calmly, politely. Too politely. “Your car is ready.” “I didn’t request one,” Elana replied. “Mr. Blackwood did.” Her heart leapt before she could stop it. Adrian. She nodded slowly and followed them outside. Rain soaked her hair instantly. The cold bit through her dress as the car door opened. Inside the vehicle, however, was not Adrian. Ryan sat there instead. Her breath rushed out. “Ryan…” “Get in,” he said quickly, eyes sharp as he glanced behind her. The door closed. The car pulled away. Only then did Elana realize her hands were shaking violently. “That wasn’t normal,” she whispered. Ryan exhaled slowly. “No. It wasn’t.” He didn’t ask questions. He didn’t tease. His seriousness frightened her more than the men at the door. “They were watching you all night,” he continued. “Timing your steps. Tracking who spoke to you.” “Why?” her voice cracked. “I didn’t do anything.” Ryan looked at her. “That’s the problem,” he said quietly. “You made him hesitate.” Across the estate, Adrian stood in his father’s private study, the door shut firmly behind him. “You embarrassed us,” Mr. Blackwood said calmly, swirling whiskey in his glass. Adrian didn’t respond. “You danced with a secretary,” Mrs. Blackwood added. “On the same night you were meant to be introduced properly beside Sarah.” “I didn’t touch her,” Adrian said. His father laughed softly. “You didn’t have to.” He set the glass down with finality. “You will correct this mistake.” “How?” Adrian asked, already knowing the answer. “You will distance yourself. Publicly. Cruelly, if necessary.” Adrian’s jaw clenched. “You want me to hurt her.” Mrs. Blackwood’s gaze was ice. “We want her to leave.” From the balcony outside, Sarah watched the rain soak the marble steps. “They won’t stop yet,” she said into her phone. A pause. “No,” she continued softly. “Not until she understands where she stands.” She ended the call and smiled to herself. At her apartment, Elana struggled to unlock the door, her fingers numb from cold and fear. Ryan followed her inside. “You can’t stay here alone tonight,” he said. “I don’t have a choice.” He hesitated, then reached into his pocket and placed something on the table. A small phone. “If anything feels wrong,” he said, “call me immediately.” She nodded. When he finally left, the silence pressed in on her chest. Her grandmother coughed weakly from the bedroom. “Elana?” she called. “I’m here,” Elana replied quickly, forcing strength into her voice. She sat on the edge of the bed, holding her grandmother’s hand, staring at the wall as unease settled deep in her bones. She didn’t see the shadow pass outside the window. The next morning, Adrian didn’t look at her. He didn’t speak to her. He didn’t even acknowledge her presence. When she brought him files, he accepted them without meeting her eyes. Her chest ached. By noon, whispers filled the office. “She’s finished.” “He chose Sarah.” “She got too bold.” Elana kept her head down. But when she returned to her desk, she found a single note waiting for her. Stay away from him. No name. No threat. Just truth sharpened into warning. That evening, as Elara left the building, her phone buzzed. Unknown number. You should have taken the warning. Her steps slowed. Behind her, footsteps echoed. Too close. Too deliberate.
