Chapter 3: An Unexpected Encounter The autumn sun filtered through the thin clouds, casting a warm glow over the village’s landscape. Erin stood in front of her modest shop, holding freshly baked muffins that emitted a delightful aroma. These muffins were made by her this morning; despite the rudimentary oven she had to use, she hoped these treats could win over the villagers. As more and more curious onlookers stopped by to taste her pastries, Erin felt a faint sense of relief, though her anxiety about this strange world still lingered. Just as Erin was busy with her work, the sound of approaching hooves interrupted her thoughts. She looked up to see a group of impressive knights riding towards the village. At the head of the procession was a tall, majestic black horse carrying a man in ornate armor. His golden hair shimmered in the sunlight, and his blue eyes were strikingly vivid. This man was undoubtedly a duke—at least, Erin could recognize such attire from her modern world. The knights' armor gleamed under the sun, creating a powerful visual impact. Erin’s heart raced as she stood by her stall, clutching a muffin, her eyes fixed on the golden-haired, blue-eyed duke. The duke dismounted with grace, his commanding presence impossible to ignore. His attendants began to survey the area, clearly conducting their routine inspection. The duke, however, walked towards Erin’s stall, his piercing blue eyes studying her with an intriguing curiosity. Erin tried to maintain her composure, forcing a smile. She knew she had to be polite and respectful in the presence of such nobility. Despite her effort to stay calm, her hands trembled slightly. She took a deep breath to steady herself. The duke approached and stopped in front of her stall. Erin gently said, “Your Grace, welcome to our village. Please try these freshly baked muffins.” The duke smiled slightly, his voice deep and warm: “The aroma is truly delightful. Are you the owner of this stall?” Erin nodded, her heart pounding with a mix of apprehension and hope. “Yes, I am. I made these muffins myself and hope you will enjoy them.” The duke took a muffin, examined it carefully, and then took a bite. The sweet flavor seemed to surprise him, and a pleased smile appeared on his face. He nodded slowly and said, “This is truly delicious. It’s impressive that you produce such exquisite pastries in this remote village.” Erin felt a wave of relief wash over her, and a smile spread across her face. “Thank you for your praise, Your Grace. We are honored by your visit.” The duke’s gaze lingered on Erin for a few seconds, as if contemplating something. He turned to his attendants and whispered a few words, then his gaze returned to Erin, his expression serious yet interested. “How is your life here? Is there anything you need help with?” Erin was taken aback but didn’t want to reveal her true struggles in this world. She smiled gently and replied, “Thank you for your concern, Your Grace. Life here is simple but stable. I just hope for more opportunities to let everyone taste my pastries.” The duke’s blue eyes glimmered with a hint of interest. “It seems you have a passion for your work here. I will mention your pastries to my subordinates. Perhaps there could be further opportunities for collaboration.” Erin was both surprised and anxious. The duke’s concern and promise undoubtedly brought new hope for her future. However, her doubts and unease were not entirely gone. She realized that the duke’s arrival might signify a turning point in her life in this strange world. After the duke departed, Erin stood at her stall, watching his figure fade into the distance. Her emotions were a mix of hope and anxiety. She knew that the arrival of the duke could herald significant changes in her life. As dusk fell, Erin prepared to close up her stall. She packed the remaining pastries into a basket, intending to take them home. Suddenly, she heard hurried footsteps. Turning around, she saw a villager running towards her, his face flushed with urgency. He breathlessly said, “Erin! You must see the duke. He needs your help!” Erin’s heart raced. Though she didn’t fully understand what was happening, she knew this moment could be crucial for her future. She quickly composed herself and followed the villager to the duke’s residence. Upon arriving, she found the duke engaged in a serious discussion with several important officials. The duke looked up and saw Erin approaching, his expression showing a mix of anticipation and concern. He gestured for her to come forward. “Erin, I’ve just learned that your pastries have received widespread acclaim. I have an important task that requires your assistance.” Erin felt a surge of excitement and tension. She knew this would be her first real test in this new world. She took a deep breath and answered firmly, “I’m willing, Your Grace. Please tell me what I can do.” A satisfied smile appeared on the duke’s face as he nodded. “Good. We will face this challenge together. I hope you continue to bring the same enthusiasm and courage.” Erin felt a blend of excitement and nervousness as she prepared to embark on a new and uncertain path. She was at the beginning of a chapter that could significantly impact her destiny in this unfamiliar world. As night fell, Erin followed the duke into the grand hall of his residence. The soft lighting reflected off the ornate walls, creating a mysterious and solemn atmosphere. Erin realized she was standing at the starting point of a crucial moment that would determine her future.
