Chapter 2 You Really Are Despicable

1000 Words
Olivia's words didn't bring a hint of joy to Steven's face; instead, his expression turned icy cold. "Olivia, are you threatening me?" Steven didn't believe Olivia genuinely wanted a divorce. The Brown family's true daughter had already returned home, leaving Olivia nowhere to go except back to the Walkers. Moreover, her love for him had once been so intense that she'd slashed her wrists. For three years, they'd had no contact, and Olivia had never mentioned divorce. Yet now, with his return, she was the one initiating it. There was only one explanation: Abigail's pregnancy had driven Olivia to use divorce as a threat to force him away from Abigail. "Of course not, Steven. I've just found it all rather pointless. With Abigail pregnant, I don't want to stand in the way of your little family reunion." Steven's face relaxed into an understanding smirk. So, it was indeed about Abigail's pregnancy. "Olivia, don't you feel the least bit guilty saying that? If you'd truly let go so easily, why did you s***h your wrists back then, forcing Grandfather to make me marry you?" At the mention of that incident, a shadow crossed Olivia's eyes. Her suicide attempt hadn't been solely for Steven. After a brief pause, Olivia brushed back her hair, her languid demeanor returning. "Never mind. Just consider I never mentioned it." Steven snorted coldly, his gaze shifting away from Olivia's striking features. Her initiation of divorce inexplicably enraged him, even causing a fleeting pang in his chest. He'd thought she meant it. How naive of him. Olivia would resort to such tactics—testing and coercing him, as always. Each time, Steven's disgust for her deepened. "Olivia, you really are despicable." This was the second time Steven had called her despicable. The first time was after that summer camp, when Steven bluntly confessed his relationship with Abigail. Stunned for a moment, she'd lunged and slapped Abigail across the face. But Steven had pulled her off Abigail, so furious that he'd broken up with her on the spot. Enraged, Olivia had roared, "Breakup? Over my dead body! I'll drag you both to hell with me!" And Steven had said it then, too. "Olivia, you really are despicable." That heart-wrenching pain had felt like a knife twisting in her heart, night after night. But with time, it had numbed her. The wound had scabbed over thickly, like armor. And so, Olivia's heart now remained utterly still. The car pulled up to the Walker Mansion. Steven's mother, Grace Walker, stood at the door. Her face showed no joy at their three-year separation when her son appeared. Instead, her first words were accusatory. "I hear you brought that vixen back with you. Did you?" Steven's stern gaze turned to Olivia. Olivia innocently shrugged. "I didn't say a word." Grace erupted in anger. "Don't give Olivia that look! Someone snapped photos of you two at the airport—it's all over the news. Do you even realize you're married? How could you do this to Olivia?" Taking a deep breath, she continued, "In looks, talent, and character, how does Olivia fall short of that scheming mistress?" Steven, growing irritable from the scolding, snapped, "Mom, stop calling her that way. Abigail is not a mistress." Grace, beside herself with fury, retorted, "You're still defending her? You've lost your mind. Just wait and think about how you'll explain this to your Grandpa! He's expecting you in the study." Steven, his face cold, strode off to the study. Grace, clutching her chest in anger, hissed, "What a disgrace!" Olivia tried to soothe her, "Mom, don't get upset." The sight of Olivia's feigned indifference made Grace's heart ache with sympathy. "Olivia, don't you worry. I may disown this son of mine, but I'll never turn my back on you, my dear. Our whole family will stand up for you." Olivia gently took Grace's arm, touched by her words. "Mom, I'm fine." Three years had passed. Her initial feelings and obsession for Steven were long gone. Back then, her youth and the dual betrayal of her boyfriend and best friend had left her nursing a grudge. When she married Steven, apart from the Brown family's scandal, there was another reason: she didn't want him to be with Abigail so easily. She had wanted to be the insurmountable barrier between them. But three years had changed everything. Olivia no longer wanted to waste her life in this hollow marriage. Thus, she took the initiative to end it. It was the Walker family she truly couldn't bear to leave. Only they had treated her as family. After comforting Grace for a while, Olivia went upstairs to change. Tonight, to mark Steven's return, the entire Walker family was gathering for a home dinner, including Steven's younger sister: Ella Walker, who was in her third year of college. Passing by the study, Olivia overheard Nicholas scolding Steven. "You can divorce Olivia if you want, but I'll transfer twenty percent of the company shares into Olivia's name. If you marry that woman, you're fired from Walker Group, and the Walkers will never give you a penny again!" Steven roared in anger, "Grandpa, how can you be so biased? Olivia's just the fake heiress of the Brown family. I'm your grandson, your real blood! Why do you care about her more?" Nicholas's voice was laced with disappointment. "I only know that Olivia grew up under my watch. The Browns treated her poorly because of old grudges, but we don't care about that. You should understand that the grudges of the previous generation have nothing to do with Olivia. She's always been a victim. If you don't care about her, at least don't join others in hurting her." Steven tried to retort but was cut off by Nicholas. "Listen well, Steven. If you give up being Olivia's husband, you also give up being the heir. Think carefully. If you're willing to let go, I won't stop you." Olivia paused mid-step and retreated to her room.
